Size, fungibility, and the strength of lobbying organizations

2017

Available online: 12 January 2017 How can a small special interest group successfully get an inefficient transfer at the expense of a much larger group with many more resources available for lobbying? We consider a simple model of agenda setting where two groups of different size lobby a politician over a transfer from one group to the other, and the group which sets the agenda can choose the size of the proposed transfer. The groups have resources which are used to pay the politician and to overcome the public goods problem within the group. Our key result is that which group prevails in the agenda setting game depends crucially on whether the transfers can also be used to pay the politici…

Discrimination by microcredit officers: Theory and evidence on disability in Uganda

2015

This paper studies the relationship between a microfinance institution (MFI) and its loan officers when officers discriminate against a particular group of micro-entrepreneurs. Using survey data from Uganda, we provide evidence that loan officers are more biased than other employees against disabled micro-entrepreneurs. In line with the evidence, we build an agency model of a non-profit MFI and a biased loan officer in charge of granting loans. Since incentive schemes are costly and the MFI's budget is limited, the MFI faces a trade-off between combating discrimination and granting loans. We show that the optimal incentive premium is a non-decreasing function of the MFI's budget. Moreover, …

Byproduct production of minor metals: Threat or opportunity for the development of clean technologies? The PV sector as an illustration

2013

Abstract Today, the fight against global warming and the coming hydrocarbon exhaustion involve a drastic increase of clean energies. These technologies resort to many minor metals which are byproduct of major metals. We will take the definition of Hageluken and Mesker (2010, Complex Life Cycles of Precious and Special Metals. In: Edition Thomas E. Graedel, Ester van der Voet (Eds.), Strungmann Forum Report, Linkages of Sustainability, MIT Press) to show precisely what minor metals are: “[they are] metals that have relatively low production or usage, which occur in low ore concentrations, are regarded as rare, or are not traded at major public exchanges”. We will analyze the byproduct status…

When Financial Economics Influences Physics: The Role of Econophysics

2018

This paper aims at analyzing the unexpected influence of Financial economics on Physics. The rise of Econophysics, a fundamentally new approach in finance, suggests that the influence between the two disciplines becomes less unilateral than in the past. Methodological debates emerging in Econophysics led physicists to acknowledge that dealing with financial complex systems contributed to a wider modelling of their field. The approach of econophysicists suggests that physicists might try to conceptualize physical phenomena by integrating elements they faced with in Financial economics, and more generally in Economics. Surprisingly, many of econophysicists’ argumentations have some methodolog…

U.I.R.D.A. – Unbuilt Italian Rationalism Digital Archive

2018

For twenty years, the architecture of Italian rationalism through the digital modelling has been investigated. Very often, the production of a model and the consequent representation of tridimensional views, in many case studies, as outcome of the research on architecture have been considered. Actually, the digital model, intended as a critical tool, has to be conceived as a ‘starting point' for graphic analysis of architecture and not as the outcome. Indeed, it is associated to other graphics, sometimes not ‘deducted' from the model, useful for the understanding/translation of architecture. The construction of the model is not the construction of a simple image, operation, which is often c…

Digital Archive: Cataloging of drawings obtained through the implementation of digital modeling software within a database that collects graphic elaborations acquired from archive drawings. Golden Ratio: Indicates the ratio between the two dimensions of which the major is the mean proportional between the minor and the sum of the two. Graphic Reading: Reading and understanding operation of an architecture through its decomposition into volumetric and geometric parts graphically expressed through an additional language. Harmonic Ratios: Geometric ratios between pure shapes traceable also in music that enable us to understand the spatial logic of drawn architecture. Hermeneutic Analysis: Interpretive approach adopted in the graphic analysis of an architecture drawing leading to the seeking of further key interpretations of the work itself. Redrawing: Graphic restitution of one or more archive drawings obtained by an interpretative practice of the project and expressed through the codes of representation that provide new information on architecture.
