MOTOR DYSFUNCTION OF THE "NON AFFECTED" LOWER LIMB: A KINEMATIC COMPARATIVE STUDY BETWEEN HEMIPARETIC STROKE AND TOTAL KNEE PROSTHESIZED PATIENTS

2009

In patients with hemispheric stroke, abnormal motor performances are described also in the ipsilateral limbs. They may be due to a cortical reorganization in the unaffected hemisphere; moreover, also peripheral mechanisms may play a role. To explore this hypothesis, we studied motor performances in 15 patients with hemispheric stroke and in 14 patients with total knee arthroplasty, which have a reduced motility in the prosthesized leg. Using the unaffected leg, they performed five superimposed circular trajectories in a prefixed pathway on a computerized footboard, while looking at a marker on the computer screen. The average trace error was significantly different between the groups of pat…

Thigh muscle function in stroke patients revealed by velocity-encoded cine phase-contrast magnetic resonance imaging.

2008

Current methods of clinical assessment of muscle coordination and function after stroke do not provide information on deep muscles. The objective of this study was to examine how stroke affects both superficial and deep muscles' coordination and whether muscle function improves after rehabilitation. Muscle function, coordination, and activity of quadriceps femoris (QF) and hamstrings were evaluated in 10 stroke patients with mild hemiparesis and in 6 controls using velocity-encoded cine phase-contrast magnetic resonance imaging (VE-PC MRI), surface electromyography (sEMG), and maximal voluntary isometric contraction torque (MVC). At baseline, the peak muscle velocity of the rectus femoris (…

Efficacy and safety of a microsomal triglyceride transfer protein inhibitor in patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia: a single-arm,…

2013

Summary Background Patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia respond inadequately to existing drugs. We aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of the microsomal triglyceride transfer protein inhibitor lomitapide in adults with this disease. Methods We did a single-arm, open-label, phase 3 study of lomitapide for treatment of patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. Current lipid lowering therapy was maintained from 6 weeks before baseline through to at least week 26. Lomitapide dose was escalated on the basis of safety and tolerability from 5 mg to a maximum of 60 mg a day. The primary endpoint was mean percent change in levels of LDL cholesterol from baseline …

Electromyographic comparison of elastic resistance and machine exercises for high-intensity strength training in patients with chronic stroke

2016

To investigate whether elastic resistance training can induce comparable levels of muscle activity as conventional machine training in patients with chronic stroke.Comparative study.Outpatient rehabilitation facility.Stroke patients (N=18) with hemiparesis (mean age, 57 ± 8y).Patients performed 3 consecutive repetitions at 10 repetition maximum of unilateral knee extension and flexion using elastic resistance and conventional machine training.Surface electromyography was measured in vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, biceps femoris, and semitendinosus and was normalized to maximal electromyography (% of max) of the nonparetic leg.In the paretic leg, agonist muscle activity ranged from 18% t…

Tight Link Between Our Sense of Limb Ownership and Self-Awareness of Actions

2007

Background and Purpose— Hemiparetic stroke patients with disturbed awareness for their motor weakness (anosognosia for hemiparesis/-plegia [AHP]) may exhibit further abnormal attitudes toward or perceptions of the affected limb(s). The present study investigated the clinical relationship and the anatomy of such abnormal attitudes and AHP. Methods— In a new series of 79 consecutively admitted acute stroke patients with right brain damage and hemiparesis/ -plegia, different types of abnormal attitudes toward the hemiparetic/plegic limb (asomatognosia, somatoparaphrenia, anosodiaphoria, misoplegia, personification, kinaesthetic hallucinations, supernumerary phantom limb) were investigated. Electromyographic comparison of conventional machine strength training versus bodyweight exercises in patients with chronic stroke

2017

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether bodyweight exercises can induce comparable levels of muscle activity as conventional machine exercises in chronic stroke patients.METHODS: Eighteen patients performed three repetitions of bilateral- and unilateral machine leg press and the bodyweight exercises chair rise and hip thrust. Surface electromyography (EMG) was recorded from 10 lower extremity muscles and normalized to maximal EMG (nEMG) of the non-paretic leg.RESULTS: For the paretic leg, the bodyweight exercises showed comparable levels of nEMG in 6 out of 10 muscles compared with the bilateral leg press. Vastus lateralis nEMG was higher during bilateral leg press compared with hip thrust (38% […

Option deltan laskeminen diskreetin Malliavin-laskennan avulla

2016

Sea Surface Temperature Effects on the Mediterranean Marine Ecosystem: a Semiparametric Model Approach

2021

Ocean warming is a worldwide phenomenon. The mean temperature of the catch (MTC) is becoming one of the leading indicators to assess the impact of sea surface temperature on fish communities. In this study, we apply a semiparametric regression approach to the MTC of the catches from MEDITS bottom trawl program in the Strait of Sicily (Central Mediterranean Sea) for the period 1995 to 2018 to evaluate the effects of climate change on continental shelf fish community. All covariates included in the model have a significant impact on the MTC level. Notably, the sea surface temperature (SST) effect on the MTC depends on depth, being positive near the surface and negative at the bottom.

Assessing the Impact of Temporary Retail Price Discounts Intervals Using SVM Semiparametric Regression

2009

Although the marketing literature has found that temporary retail price discounts cause a significant sales increase, little is known about the specific characteristics of deals that influence the magnitude of the sales spike. In this paper, we analyse the impact of the length of temporary retail price discounts periods on the sales increase using scanner-store daily-sales data for two frequently purchased product categories: ground coffee (a storable category) and yogurt (a perishable category).Wedevelop a robust semiparametric regression model based on support vector statistical theory with several previously proposed predictors along with a daily time description. This model also makes i…

Evaluating temporary retail price discounts using semiparametric regression

2009

PurposeTo analyze the impact of temporary retail price discount on a consumer goods product category using semiparametric regression and considering different promotional price discount characteristics as well as brand characteristics.Design/methodology/approachA semiparametric regression model using Support Vector Machines, which aim to evaluate retailers' decisions about temporary price discounts, has been developed. The model is derived from the analysis of historical sales data, which provide precise evaluation of previous temporary price discounts periods. The model is also consistent with ample empirical evidence showing that historical retail sales data can be used to evaluate the im…
