Microwave-assisted extraction of OCPs, PCBs and PAHs concentrated by semi-permeable membrane devices (SPMDs)

2005

Abstract Microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) has been evaluated as an alternative to dialysis for extraction of some water-borne hydrophobic contaminants sampled by semi-permeable membrane devices (SPMDs). Seven organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), 11 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and 13 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were accumulated in SPMDs at nanogram levels and extracted with three 3-min irradiation cycles with 33 mL of a solvent mixture hexane–water (10:1,v/v) in each cycle. The developed MAE method gave for all analytes investigated statistically comparable extraction yields with those found by dialysis carried out with a total volume of 250 mL hexane for 48 h at room temper…

Reversed-phase liquid chromatography without organic solvent for determination of tricyclic antidepressants

2012

The chromatographic behavior of seven tricyclic antidepressants (amitryptiline, clomipramine, doxepin, imipramine, maprotiline, nortryptiline, and trimipramine) was examined with micellar mobile phases containing the nonionic surfactant Brij-35. Acetonitrile-water mixtures were also used for comparison purposes. Tricyclic antidepressants are moderately polar basic drugs, which are positively charged in the usual working pH. This gives rise to a strong association with the alkyl chains and residual ionized silanols in silica-based stationary phases, which is translated in a high consumption of organic solvent to get appropriate retention times. Brij-35 modifies the surface of the stationary …

Surface modification of graphite+polymer composite and ITO electrodes by Nafion®+cupromeronic phthalocyanine films

1999

Abstract The surface of indium tin oxide (ITO) and graphite+polymer composite electrodes can be modified by Nafion ® films containing a little amount of dispersed electroactive substances, such as phthalocyanines. This procedure allows the recovery of electroanalytical information on the electroactive deposited substance. The preparation methods for these types of modified electrodes are discussed from the voltammetric results obtained in this work. The Nafion ® net acts as a permeable membrane to the hydrogen ions. Furthermore, the presence of methylviologen within the Nafion ® film makes the electron transport throughout this membrane easy.

Data from: Effects of food abundance and early clutch predation on reproductive timing in a high Arctic shorebird exposed to advancements in arthropo…

2017

Climate change may influence the phenology of organisms unequally across trophic levels and thus lead to phenological mismatches between predators and prey. In cases where prey availability peaks before reproducing predators reach maximal prey demand, any negative fitness consequences would selectively favor resynchronization by earlier starts of the reproductive activities of the predators. At a study site in northeast Greenland, over a period of 17 years, the median emergence of the invertebrate prey of Sanderling Calidris alba advanced with 1.27 days per year. Yet, over the same period Sanderling did not advance hatching date. Thus, Sanderlings increasingly hatched after their prey was m…

Changing forest stakeholders’ perception of ecosystem services with linguistic nudging

2019

This paper explores whether the perceptions of forest owners and professionals could be nudged towards more sustainable management practices by adjusting a policy text's metaphorical content. Recent research has demonstrated a link between information interventions and preference change, but there is a need to further explore individuals' reactions to information on forest-based ecosystem services and to link these to the design of policy instruments. We contribute to narrowing this gap by nudging the content of a policy text comparing rotation forest management (RFM) and continuous cover forestry (CCF), and exposing it to forest stakeholders. The research is carried out in Finland, the so-…

Basal ice formation in snow cover in Northern Finland between 1948 and 2016

2018

Abstract Basal ice formation in the terrestrial snow cover is a common phenomenon in northern circumpolar areas, one having significant impacts on ecosystems, vegetation, animals and human activities. There is limited knowledge on the spatial and temporal occurrence of basal ice formation because of the sparse observation network and challenges involved in detecting formation events. We present a unique dataset on the annual extent of ice formation events in northern Finland between 1948 and 2016 based on reindeer herders’ descriptions of the cold season in their management reports. In extreme years, basal ice can form over wide geographical extents. In approximately half of the herding dis…

Oppimisen teknologiat osana oppimisen esteitä kohtaavien peruskoululaisten elämää

2017

Tämän tutkielman tarkoituksena on tutkia oppimisen teknologioiden vaikutuksia erityisesti oppimisen esteitä kohtaavien oppilaiden oppimiseen. Oppimisen esteitä, kuten erilaisi…

Evolution of dry season low cloud cover over the Atlantic coast of Central Africa from diurnal to interannual scale

2022

Despite its bioclimatic importance, few studies have focused on the stratiform low-level cloud cover ofthe dry season (June-September) of the Atlantic coast of Central Africa. Using in-situ data documenting theperiod 1971-2019, we show that this cloud cover is underestimated by SAFNWC satellite observations andCMIP6 models. We identify three types of days: clear, cloudy at night and totally cloudy, the latterbeing more frequent on the coast and inland, to the windward of the Cristal and Chaillu Mountains. Onan interannual scale, temperature anomalies in the South Tropical Atlantic, the equatorial Pacific and theCongo Basin, by modulating the meridional and zonal circulation cells, influence…

The 21st Century Reforms (Re)Shaping the Education Policy of Inclusive and Special Education in Finland

2021

In recent decades, an essential global aim of the reforms of special education has been the promotion of inclusive education. This article discusses the implementation of reforms with a focus on tiered support systems in the context of Finnish comprehensive school education. Based on earlier literature, legislation, and administrative documents, we provide a background for Finnish education policy and special education reforms. The focus of this article is on the description of parallel reforms targeting the re-structuring of the systems around support for students and funding of education in the 2010s. We discuss the processes leading to these reforms and the reforms themselves. In additio…

Providing insights into browntail moth local outbreaks by combining life table data and semi-parametric statistics

2011

1. Life table studies have been an essential tool for the comprehension of insect population dynamics, although their use has been methodologically biased by a primary focus on mortality factors, especially natural enemies. Thus, studies in natural populations may relegate important mortality sources to the ‘unknown’ or ‘residual’ mortality categories. To overcome this limitation, life tables may be complemented by combining them with other approaches. 2. The aim of the present study was to provide insights into browntail moth Euproctis chrysorrhoea L. (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae) local outbreaks by combining life table data and statistical modelling. First, E. chrysorrhoea population densit…
