Separate regression modelling of the Gaussian and Exponential components of an EMG response from respiratory physiology.

2014

If Y1 \sim N(\mu ;\sigma^2) and Y2 \sim Exp(\nu), with Y1 independent of Y2, then their sum Y = Y1 +Y2 follows an Exponentially Modified Gaussian (EMG) distribution. In many applications it is of interest to model the two components separately, in order to investigate their (possibly) different important predictors. We show how this can be done through a GAMLSS with EMG response, and apply this separate regression modelling strategy to a dataset on lung function variables from the SAPALDIA cohort study.

The Use of GAMLSS Framework for a Non-Stationary Frequency Analysis of Annual Runoff Data over a Mediterranean Area

2022

Climate change affects all the components of the hydrological cycle. Starting from precipitation distribution, climate alterations have direct effects on both surface water and groundwater in terms of their quantity and quality. These effects lead to modifications in water availability for agriculture, ecology and other social uses. Change in rainfall patterns also affects the runoff of natural rivers. For this reason, studying runoff data according to classical hydrological approaches, i.e., statistical inference methods that exploit stationary probability distributions, might result in missing important information relevant to climate change. From this point of view, a new approach has to…

A flexible approach for modelling a proportion response variable: Loss given default

2016

Loss given default (LGD) is a proportion of a credit exposure that is lost if the obligor defaults on a loan. Response variable LGD contains values between 0 and 1 including both 0 and 1, where 0 means that the balance is fully recovered while 1 means total loss of exposure at default. This article addresses two alternative semi parametric approaches for modelling loss given default, which is measured on the interval [0,1]. The class of models are very flexible and can accommodate skewness and bimodal characteristics of LGD data. The dependence of the predictors of each of the parameters (of the proposed model distribution for LGD) on explanatory variables can be additive P-splines, regress…

A QSAR study investigating the potential anti-HIV-1 effect of some acyclovir and ganciclovir analogs

2009

A QSAR study, involving the use of calculated physical-chemical properties (TSAR TM ), and the use of a neural network approach (TSAR TM ), has been performed on the potential anti-HIV-1 activity of a series of Acyclovir and Ganciclovir analogs. Model obtained allows reliable predictions for the anti-HIV-1 activity of these derivatives, and showed that the presence of the Ganciclovir chain in triazolopyrrolopyrimidine and pyrimidopyrrolopyrimidine series seems to increase the antiviral effect.

Tommaso Salvini 1860: Fortinbras come Garibaldi al Teatro dei Fiorentini di Napoli

2021

Garibaldi landed in Marsala on 11 May 1860. In July of the same year, the Thousand were still fighting in Sicily with the aim of reaching Calabria, where they would have arrived on 1 August, and from there marched to Naples. And on the very evening of 14 July, on the stage of Florentines theatre in Naples, the leading actor Tommaso Salvini (1829-1915) presented a mutilated Hamlet, deprived above all of the most introspective and sentimental scenes, whose interpretation is still preserved in his prompt-book of Hamlet. The declamatory symbols marked by Salvini are still readable in the prompt-book of his 1860 interpretation that is now housed at the Museo Biblioteca dell’Attore, in Genoa. Und…

Usher syndrome and Leber congenital amaurosis are molecularly linked via a novel isoform of the centrosomal ninein-like protein.

2009

Contains fulltext : 80984.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access) Usher syndrome (USH) and Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA) are autosomal recessive disorders resulting in syndromic and non-syndromic forms of blindness. In order to gain insight into the pathogenic mechanisms underlying retinal degeneration, we searched for interacting proteins of USH2A isoform B (USH2A(isoB)) and the LCA5-encoded protein lebercilin. We identified a novel isoform of the centrosomal ninein-like protein, hereby named Nlp isoform B (Nlp(isoB)), as a common interactor. Although we identified the capacity of this protein to bind calcium with one of its three EF-hand domains, the interacton with USH2A(isoB) did …

2D motif basis applied to the classification of digital images

2016

The classification of raw data often involves the problem of selecting the appropriate set of features to represent the input data. Different types of features can be extracted from the input dataset, but only some of them are actually relevant for the classification process. Since relevant features are often unknown in real-world problems, many candidate features are usually introduced. This degrades both the speed and the predictive accuracy of the classifier due to the presence of redundancy in the set of candidate features. Recently, a special class of bidimensional motifs, i.e. 2D motif basis has been introduced in the literature. 2D motif basis showed to be powerful in capturing the r…

A Machine Learning Approach for Fall Detection Based on the Instantaneous Doppler Frequency

2019

Modern societies are facing an ageing problem that is accompanied by increasing healthcare costs. A major share of this ever-increasing cost is due to fall-related injuries, which urges the development of fall detection systems. In this context, this paper paves the way for the development of radio-frequency-based fall detection systems, which do not require the user to wear any device and can detect falls without compromising the user's privacy. For the design of such systems, we present an activity simulator that generates the complex path gain of indoor channels in the presence of one person performing three different activities: slow fall, fast fall, and walking. We have developed a mac…

Online assessment of strategic reading literacy skills

2015

This study investigates the possibility of assessing strategic reading literacy skills with computers. The critical value of this assessment is the recording of online indices of the reader's behavior that can be interpreted in terms of strategies. The study uses materials of a standardized paper-and-pencil reading literacy test called CompLEC (Llorens et?al., 2011) and a technology called Read&Answer (Vidal-Abarca et?al., 2011) that presents texts and questions with a masking procedure that allows the recording of reading time and readers' actions to develop a computer-based version called e-CompLEC. We found that reliability and validity of the two versions are largely equivalent, and tha…

HyperLabelMe : A Web Platform for Benchmarking Remote-Sensing Image Classifiers

2017

HyperLabelMe is a web platform that allows the automatic benchmarking of remote-sensing image classifiers. To demonstrate this platform's attributes, we collected and harmonized a large data set of labeled multispectral and hyperspectral images with different numbers of classes, dimensionality, noise sources, and levels. The registered user can download training data pairs (spectra and land cover/use labels) and submit the predictions for unseen testing spectra. The system then evaluates the accuracy and robustness of the classifier, and it reports different scores as well as a ranked list of the best methods and users. The system is modular, scalable, and ever-growing in data sets and clas…
