Immunohistochemical and transcriptional expression of the matrix metalloproteinases MMP-2 and MMP-9 in normal and pathological human oral mucosa
2009
The oral cavity is exposed to chronic or recurrent, physical and chemical trauma that could lead to mucosal reactions (e.g. hyperplasia, dysplasia and tumors). The objective of this study is to investigate the expression and the possible changes of the two matrix metalloproteinases MMP-2 and MMP-9 in normal and pathological human oral mucosa samples. Normal oral mucosa samples and three different types of pathological conditions (hyperplasia, dysplasia and carcinoma) were used for this study. Immunohistochemical analysis was used to evaluate protein expression for the two enzymes, while Reverse Transcription ? Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) was used to investigate gene expression. Matrix metalloproteinase-2 matrix metalloproteinase-9 and inducible nitric oxide synthase in oral leukoplakia: Immunohistochemistry and RT-PCR analys…
2008
Oral leukoplakia is the most common and potentially malignant disorder of the oral mucosa. The definition of leukoplakia given by the World Health Organization is "a white plaque that cannot be characterized either from a clinical or from a histopathological point of view", thus the diagnosis of leukoplakia is based on the exclusion of other lesions of the oral mucosa. We believe it is necessary to identify molecular and immunohistochemical parameters that can contribute to discriminating between the different leukoplakia clinical subtypes coded by the epidemiology. In the present work we show the preliminary results of this research project. We investigated the expression of matrix metallo…
Modulation of MMP-2 and MMP-9 in Churg-Strauss syndrome respiratory mucosa: potential monitoring parameters.
2014
Churg-Strauss (CSS) syndrome is rare and of unknown etiology. It is associated with vasculitis, blood eosinophilia and granulomatosis, and affects multiple organs and systems at various stages of the disease. Specific diagnostic and monitoring tests are not yet available. This study aims to assess the changes in MMP-2 and MMP-9 along with the histopathological alterations in two cases of CSS, as possible potential diagnostic and monitoring criteria. Two adult male patients were diagnosed with CSS in the otorhinolaryngology clinic in the University of Palermo, based on multiple clinical and histopathologic criteria. Biopsies of respiratory mucosa were taken after the consent of the patients…

Immunohistochemical expression of iNOS and matrix metalloproteinases MMP-2 and MMP-9 in aortic aneurysms
2007
Aortic aneurysms (AA) is a degenerative vascular disease characterized by localized dilatation of the aortic wall as a result of altered matrix composition (elastin and collagen degradation). Howewer the pathogenesis of the changes is elusive and unclear. Some experimental evidences suggest that iNOS (who synthesize a large amount of NO in inflammatory processes) and the metalloproteinases (MMP) are implicated in the pathogenesis of AA but the relationship between NO and MMP to aneurismal disease is currently unknown. The aim of this study is to investigate the immunohistochemical expression of iNOS and MMP2 and MMP9 in human aneurysmal tissues.
Robust and Model Predictive Control applied to DC/DC converters and Shunt Active Filters
Role of Matrix Metalloproteinases in complications of thoracic aortic aneurysm
2014
Objectve: Metalloproteinases (MMPs) are endopeptidases involved in extracellular matrix remodelling, associated with both physiopatological processes of several human tissues and systems, such as vascular system. It is well known their involvement in mediating both beneficial and pathological aorta effects, such as abdominal orta aneurysms and its complcations. On the contrary, unclear data exist about their role in the pathophysiology of sporadic thoracic aneurysm (TAA) and its complications. Thus, the aim of this study was to nalyse the role of MMPs in TAA complications, i.e. rupture and dissection. Methods: Aortic specimens obtained from 73 patients (51 men and 22 women, age 61.7 years) a…
Behaviour of the plasma concentration of gelatinases and their tissue inhibitors in subjects with venous leg ulcers.
2015
Venous leg ulcers are common in subjects with chronic venous insufficiency. The increased intraluminal pressure causes alteration of the skin microcirculation, leukocyte activation and release of proteolytic enzymes leading to ulceration. An impaired expression and activity of matrix metalloproteases (MMPs) and their tissue inhibitors (TIMPs) might influence extracellular matrix degradation and deposition in chronic venous ulcers with the failure of the healing process. Our aim was to evaluate plasma concentration of gelatinases (MMP-2 and MMP-9) and their inhibitors (TIMP-1 and TIMP-2) in subjects with venous leg ulcers before and after the compression therapy. We enrolled 36 subjects (12 …
Vanadium perturbs the fertilization outcome and the metalloproteinase activity in sea urchin embryos
2021
Metal toxicology represents a current major topic due to the disper- sion of these elements in the environment. Metals are released from both natural sources and industrial activities. Some of them have also a clinical interest due to their application as metallodrugs (i.e., Pt, Cu, Au, Ru, and Y) or in medical diagnosis (Gd).1,2 Recently, V derivatives are considered as potential therapeutic factors in some diseases (e.g., obesity, diabetes, cancer, neurodegenerative and heart disorders). As a consequence, pharmaceutical residues could repre- sent emerging pollutants of aquatic environments, as wastewater treatment plants do not sufficiently remove these compounds3. Embryonic models repres…
