Polysarcosine-containing copolymers: Synthesis, characterization, self-assembly, and applications

Although the first polysarcosine (pSar) synthesis by Wesseley et al. was reported almost a century ago, it was only recently that pSar gained broader attention and is considered a potential alternative of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG). In contrast to polyethers, such as PEG, pSar is a polypeptoid based on the amino acid sarcosine, i.e. N-methylated glycine. As a polymer, pSar combines PEG-like properties, e.g., excellent solubility in water, protein resistance, low cellular toxicity and a non-immunogenic character, while being based on endogenous material. Diastereoselective Functionalization of a Spherand‐Type Calixarene

Condensation of 5,5'-di-tert-butyl-2,2'-dihydroxybiphenyl (1) with formaldehyde yields a cyclic trimer 2 (and tetramer 3) having three (four) methylene groups less than a calix[6]arene (calix[8]arene). Alkylation of the (flexible) trimer with ethyl bromoacetate gives exclusively the stereoisomer 4 with C 2 symmetry, while the isomer with D 3 symmetry is not observed. Two isomers 6a and 6b (C 2 and C 1 symmetry) are obtained by treatment with tert-butyl bromoacetate which both are converted by transesterification with methanol into the same hexamethyl ester 5 having C 2 symmetry. Regioselective Synthesis of 2-Imino-1,3-thiazolidin-4-ones by Treatment ofN-(Anthracen-9-yl)-N′-ethylthiourea with Bromoacetic Acid Derivatives

The reaction between N-(anthracen-9-yl)-N′-ethylthiourea (1) and methyl bromoacetate yielded mainly 2-[(anthracen-9-yl)imino]-3-ethyl-1,3-thiazolidin-4-one (2), together with some of the regioisomeric 3-(anthracen-9-yl)-2-ethylimino-1,3-thiazolidin-4-one (3). The structures of the products were elucidated by NMR techniques and, for 3, X-ray crystallographic analysis. Treatment of 1 with bromoacetyl bromide again yielded 2 and 3, but with a reversed product distribution ratio, thus providing an interesting and unexpected regioselectivity, depending on the electrophile selected. Preparation of potentially porous, chiral organometallic materials through spontaneous resolution of pincer palladium conformers.

Understanding the mechanism by which advanced materials assemble is essential for the design of new materials with desired properties. Here, we report a method to form chiral, potentially porous materials through spontaneous resolution of conformers of a PCP pincer palladium complex ({2,6-bis[(di-t-butylphosphino)methyl]phenyl}palladium(II)halide). The crystallisation is controlled by weak hydrogen bonding giving rise to chiral qtz-nets and channel structures, as shown by 16 such crystal structures for X = Cl and Br with various solvents like pentane and bromobutane. Systematic study of physicochemical properties of a homologous series of aminobisphosphonates

Aminobisphosphonates, e.g., alendronate and neridronate, are a well known class of molecules used as drugs for various bone diseases. Although these molecules have been available for decades, a detailed understanding of their most important physicochemical properties under comparable conditions is lacking. In this study, ten aminobisphosphonates, H2N(CH2)nC(OH)[P(O)(OH)2]2, in which n = 2–5, 7–11 and 15 have been synthesized. Their aqueous solubility as a function of temperature and pH, pKa-values, thermal stability, IR absorptions, and NMR spectral data for bothliquid (1H, 13C, 31P-NMR) and solid state (13C, 15N and 31P-CPMAS NMR) were determined. peerReviewed

The main purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of frequency, thereby increasing training volume, of resistance training on body composition, inflammation markers, lipid and glycemic profile in healthy older individuals (age range 65-75 year). Ninety-two healthy participants were randomly assigned to one of four groups; performing strength training one- (EX1), two- (EX2), or three- (EX3) times-per-week and a non-training control (CON) group.
