Radiative heat power at Stromboli volcano during 2000–2011: Twelve years of MODIS observations
2012
Abstract Twelve years of night-time MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) observations, has been analysed to detect and quantify the radiative heat power emitted by Stromboli volcano (from March 2000 to September 2011). Using an accurate background subtraction of the MODIS signal at 4 μm, we were able to discriminate two main regimes of thermal radiation, related to different levels of volcanic activity. Effusive eruptions (occurred on December 28, 2002 and February 27, 2007) radiated at an average of ~ 186 MW with a frequency of alert detection of 50–95%. Conversely, during the typical strombolian activity, an average of ~ 9 MW is radiated, with a frequency of alert detecti…
Noise Reduction and Gap Filling of fAPAR Time Series Using an Adapted Local Regression Filter
2014
Time series of remotely sensed data are an important source of information for understanding land cover dynamics. In particular, the fraction of absorbed photosynthetic active radiation (fAPAR) is a key variable in the assessment of vegetation primary production over time. However, the fAPAR series derived from polar orbit satellites are not continuous and consistent in space and time. Filtering methods are thus required to fill in gaps and produce high-quality time series. This study proposes an adapted (iteratively reweighted) local regression filter (LOESS) and performs a benchmarking intercomparison with four popular and generally applicable smoothing methods: Double Logistic (DLOG), sm…
Land surface temperature and evapotranspiration estimation in the Amazon evergreen forests using remote sensing data
2019
Amazonian tropical forests play a significant role in global water, carbon and energy cycles. Considering the relevance of this biome and the climate change projections which predict a hotter and drier climate for the region, the monitoring of the vegetation status of these forests becomes of significant importance. In this context, vegetation temperature and evapotranspiration (ET) can be considered as key variables. Vegetation temperature is directly linked with plant physiology. In addition, some studies have shown the existing relationship between this variable and the CO2 absorption capacity and biomass loss of these forests. Evapotranspiration resulting from the combined processes of …
SST Comparison of AVHRR and MODIS Time Series in the Western Mediterranean Sea
2020
