Protecting quantum resources via frequency modulation of qubits in leaky cavities

2018

Finding strategies to preserve quantum resources in open systems is nowadays a main requirement for reliable quantum-enhanced technologies. We address this issue by considering structured cavities embedding qubits driven by a control technique known as frequency modulation. We first study a single qubit in a lossy cavity to determine optimal modulation parameters and qubit-cavity coupling regime allowing a gain of four orders of magnitude concerning coherence lifetimes. We relate this behavior to the inhibition of the qubit effective decay rate rather than to stronger memory effects (non-Markovianity) of the system. We then exploit these findings in a system of noninteracting qubits embedde…

Emergence of extreme events in fiber-based parametric processes driven by a partially incoherent pump wave

2009

Modulation instability (MI) generated by a picosecond coherent pulse has been recently identified as the key element of the generation of optical rogue-waves in supercontinuum-based systems [1]. Similar rare but highly energetic pulse structures can also appear in non-solitonic configurations such as Raman amplifiers driven by a partially incoherent pump wave propagating in fibres with low group velocity dispersion [2]. Therefore, one may wonder whether optical rogue-like event can also occur in MI-based amplifier because both Raman and parametric amplifiers benefit from a quasi-instantaneous gain. We provide here experimental evidence of rare optical events in a parametric amplifier in pre…

Pulse EPR methods for studying chemical and biological samples containing transition metals

2006

This review discusses the application of pulse EPR to the characterization of disordered systems, with an emphasis on samples containing transition metals. Electron nuclear double-resonance (ENDOR), electron-spin-echo envelope-modulation (ESEEM), and double electron-electron resonance (DEER) methodologies are outlined. The theory of field modulation is outlined, and its application is illustrated with DEER experiments. The simulation of powder spectra in EPR is discussed, and strategies for optimization are given. The implementation of this armory of techniques is demonstrated on a rich variety of chemical systems: several porphyrin derivatives that are found in proteins and used as model s…

An efficient wireless power transfer prototype for electrical vehicles

2017

Based on the inductive power transfer (IPT), the contactless approach allows safe and comfortable operations of battery charging for Electric Vehicles (EVs). In this paper, a contactless system particularly suitable for E-bike battery charging is proposed. A practical realization of the system has been carried out, aiming at the system evaluation in terms of working and efficiency. Through a phase shift modulation, a power regulation has been implemented. The target power level is 100 W.

ADAM10 in Alzheimer's disease: Pharmacological modulation by natural compounds and its role as a peripheral marker.

2019

Abstract Alzheimer’s disease (AD) represents a global burden in the economics of healthcare systems. Amyloid-β (Aβ) peptides are formed by amyloid-β precursor protein (AβPP) cleavage, which can be processed by two pathways. The cleavage by the α-secretase A Disintegrin And Metalloprotease 10 (ADAM10) releases the soluble portion (sAβPPα) and prevents senile plaques. This pathway remains largely unknown and ignored, mainly regarding pharmacological approaches that may act via different signaling cascades and thus stimulate non-amyloidogenic cleavage through ADAM10. This review emphasizes the effects of natural compounds on ADAM10 modulation, which eventuates in a neuroprotective mechanism. M…

High-Speed Machines: Typologies, Standards, and Operation under PWM Supply

2018

This paper presents an overview of the most recent state of the art in the field of high-speed electric machines fed through high-frequency converters. This type of systems is rapidly wide spreading in aeronautical and automotive applications, as well as microturbines. Each typology has its own advantages and downsides, which are analytically presented in this paper. Some types of high-speed electric machines require high-frequency voltage supply, highly stressing the dielectric materials of the winding insulation system. For this reason, in high-speed electric drives, premature failure may occur and a reduction of the total system reliability has been observed in the past years. Such issue…

Tunable source of infrared pulses in gas-filled hollow core capillary

2020

International audience; We report a tunable source that generates pulses in the infrared from an optical parametric amplification in a gas-filled hollow core capillary based on four-wave mixing process, in which the phase matching strongly depends on the gas pressure and the pump. In our case, we have generated pulses from 1 to 1.6 m in the sub-µJ level together with a parametric amplification in the visible.

Homodyne Solid-State Biased Coherent Detection of Ultra-Broadband Terahertz Pulses with Static Electric Fields.

2021

We present an innovative implementation of the solid-state-biased coherent detection (SSBCD) technique, which we have recently introduced for the reconstruction of both amplitude and phase of ultra-broadband terahertz pulses. In our previous works, the SSBCD method has been operated via a heterodyne scheme, which involves demanding square-wave voltage amplifiers, phase-locked to the THz pulse train, as well as an electronic circuit for the demodulation of the readout signal. Here, we demonstrate that the SSBCD technique can be operated via a very simple homodyne scheme, exploiting plain static bias voltages. We show that the homodyne SSBCD signal turns into a bipolar transient when the stat…

Short-term impact of a Western diet on the physiology of the peripheral olfactory system

2016

Current feeding behaviors contribute to the epidemic levels of obesity and diabetes observed in Europe and worldwide. Both the quantity and the quality of ingested food are incriminated. Together with other sensory modalities, olfaction is involved in the control of food intake. Olfactory cues can influence eating behaviors, yet the nutritional status and diet can also alter olfactory abilities. Patients with metabolic disorders present impaired olfactory sensitivity which could in turn worsen their eating behaviors. Here we examined the short-term impact of a Western diet enriched in fat and sugar (High Fat High Sugar, HFHS) on the anatomy and physiology of the olfactory epithelium of postn…

Evaluation of all-optical demultiplexing in millimeter-wave subcarrier-system for wireless communication

2006

In this paper, a scheme for multiplexing millimeter-wave carriers on a single optical carrier and using an all-optical millimeter-wave demultiplexer is presented. The optical demultiplexing of radio-over-fiber signals is based on dual sideband modulation with suppressed optical carrier combined with the filtering properties of dual over-written fiber Bragg gratings. The performance of the system is investigated using a single optical carrier and independent data modulated millimeter-wave signals at 20 and 40 GHz. The signals are transmitted over optical fiber, demultiplexed and wirelessly distributed to a mobile unit. It is found that performance of the demultiplexing using fiber Bragg grat…
