Assessment of non-carious root surface defects in areas of gingival recession: A descriptive study.

2015

BACKGROUND The purpose of this descriptive study was to observe the distribution of four different classes of non-carious cervical root surface discrepancies in teeth with gingival recession. Additionally to explore the different treatment modalities in the literature for each of these defects. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 150 subjects with at least one labial gingival recession were included in the study. 1400 teeth were evaluated using 2.5 X magnification loupes and UNC -15 probe for the presence of the cemento-enamel junction and step like defects according to Pini-Prato's classification: A-, identifiable CEJ without defect; A+, identifiable CEJ with defect; B-, unidentifiable CEJ wit…

Sealing effectiveness of fissure sealant bonded with universal adhesive systems on saliva-contaminated and noncontaminated enamel.

2017

Background The effectiveness of sealants is dependent upon their adhesion to enamel surface. The aim of the study was to evaluate the sealing ability of a pit and fissure sealant used with a universal adhesive (etch-and-rinse vs. self-etch modes) when the site is contaminated with saliva. Adhesive properties were evaluated as microleakage and scanning electron microscopic (SEM) characteristics. Material and methods A total of 72 mandibular third molars were randomly divided into 6 groups (n=12). Occlusal pits and fissures were sealed with an unfilled resin fissure sealant (FS) material with or without saliva contamination. The groups included: 1) phosphoric acid etching + FS (control), 2) p…

Prenatal effects by exposing to amoxicillin on dental enamel in Wistar rats

2012

Amoxicillin is an antibiotic widely prescribed; its most frequent side effects are gastrointestinal disorders and hypersensitivity reactions. Over the last 10 years studies have been published which suggest that amoxicillin may cause dental alterations similar to dental fluorosis. Never the less, the results are not conclusive, this is why it was planned the need to make controlled studies on test animals. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect produced by amoxicillin prenatal administration on dental enamel in Wistar rats. Study Design: 12 pregnant adult rats were used distributed into five different groups: witness control (n=2) didn't get any treatment; negativ…

Ultramorphology and dentine permeability changes induced by prophylactic procedures on exposed dentinal tubules in middle dentine

2010

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the changes in dentinal permeability (i.e. hydraulic conductance) after prophylactic treatments performed using prophy-powders with air-polishing system or prophy-pastes on exposed middle dentine. The changes in dentine morphology were evaluated by SEM. Study design: Commercial prophylactic pastes and air-polishing powders were tested in this study. Dentine discs from human third molars were used to study the quantitative reduction of the dentine permeability under simulated pulpal pressure (20 cm H 2O). Further specimens were gold-coated and analysed using observed a SEM. Results: The results of this study showed different dentine perme…

Wetting ability of an acetone/based etch rinse adhesive after NaOCl-treatment

2011

Objectives: to evaluate the effect of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) treatment on surface dentin roughness (Ra) and contact angle (CA) when using Prime&Bond NT adhesive (PB NT). Study Design: Extracted human third molars were sectioned to expose flat, superficial and deep dentin surfaces. CA and Ra were measured (1) before and (2) after 35% H3PO4 etching, and (3) H3PO4 etching + 5% NaOCl treated for 2 minutes before the application of PB NT. CA was measured by the Axisymmetric Drop Shape Analysis Technique using distilled and deionized water and PB NT. Roughness was evaluated with a profilometer, twelve radial measurements were performed in each treatment surface. Data were analyzed with two-w…

Influence of simplified, higher-concentrated sodium ascorbate application protocols on bond strength of bleached enamel

2019

Background Bleaching procedures performed before restorative procedures, due to the oxygen released, affects the quality of bonding restorations. The application of an lower-concentrated antioxidant for one-hour or more can reversal the compromised bonding to bleached enamel, but it was not effective according to the bleaching concentrations applied. The aim of the present study was to evaluate simplified protocol of higher-concentrated sodium ascorbate (35%SA) in bond strength values of enamel bleached with 10%, 16%, 22% carbamide peroxide (CP) or 35% hydrogen peroxide (HP). Material and Methods Three hundred and forty enamel surfaces of 85 human third molars were used, divided into 17 gro…

Reduction of Polymerization Shrinkage Stress and Marginal Microleakage Using Soft-Start Polymerization

2003

Purpose: This study evaluated the influence of a soft-start light-curing exposure on polymerization shrinkage stress and marginal integrity of adhesive restorations. Materials and Methods: Six resin-based composites (Pertac II, Tetric Ceram, Definite, Surefil, Solitaire, and Visio-Molar) were adhesively bonded to a cylindrical cavity (n = 9 per material/light) in a photoelastic material. Visible light-curing was applied using either the standard polymerization mode (800 mW/cm2 exposure duration 40 s) of the curing light (Elipar TriLight, 3M ESPE) or the exponential mode from the same device (ramp-curing: 150 mW/cm2 to 800 mW/cm2 within the first 15 s of a total curing time of 40 s). Polymer…

Effects of elevated hydrogen peroxide 'strip' bleaching on surface and subsurface enamel including subsurface histomorphology, micro-chemical composi…

2007

Abstract Objectives This study examined the effects of elevated concentration hydrogen peroxide tooth whitening treatments on tooth surface and subsurface integrity. Methods Sound human molars were ground and polished to prepare an uniform substrate for bleaching treatments. A cycling treatment included alternating ex vivo human salivary exposures with bleaching treatments under conditions of controlled temperature and durations of treatment. Bleaching was carried out with prototype bleaching strips containing hydrogen peroxide gel at 13% and 16% concentrations. A non-bleached group was used as a control. Treatments included 28 h of total bleaching exposure in vitro . Surface color was meas…

Effect of the intra-alveolar administration of dexamethasone on swelling, trismus, and pain after impacted lower third molar extraction: a randomized…

2021

Background To evaluate the efficacy of intra-alveolar administration of dexamethasone 4 mg in the control of edema, trismus, and pain resulting from the extraction of impacted lower third molars and the drug permeability through the oral mucosa by in silico prediction. Material and Methods The randomized, double-blind, split-mouth clinical trial included patients who had both impacted lower third molars in equivalent positions. Hemiarches were divided into control side when dexamethasone was administered orally and experimental side when dexamethasone was administered using the intra-alveolar route. Patients were evaluated considering edema, trismus, and pain. The permeability of dexamethas…

The Frequency of taurodontism in the Turkish population

2011

Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence and degree of taurodontism in a group of Turkish adult dental patients. Study design: A retrospective study was performed using panoramic radiography of 490 patients ranging in age from 18 to 65. These patients were analyzed for taurodontism. Descriptive characteristics of sex, jaws, and localization were recorded. The data was analyzed using the Pearson chi-square test. Results: Taurodontism was detected in 22.8% of patients and 4.2% of the teeth examined. Anomalies were found in 22.2% of females compared with 23.8% of males. However, no significant difference was found between the genders (p > 0.05). Taurodontism was more dist…
