Effects of simultaneous nicotine and alcohol use in periodontitis progression in rats: A histomorphometric study

2013

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of alcohol and nicotine, when used alone or simulta - neously, on the alveolar bone loss area resulting from ligature-induced periodontitis in rats. Study design: Forty adult male rats received a cotton ligature in the first lower molar sulcular area, and the animals were randomly assigned to different treatments (n = 10, each group) including daily peritoneal injections of saline solution (group A), submitted to self-administration of alcohol 25% (group B), nicotine solution in concentration 0.19 ?l/ml (group C), and nicotine solution in concentration 0.19 ?l/ml plus self-administration of alcohol 25% (group D). Five weeks later, the animal…

Effect of pre-operatory low-level laser therapy on pain, swelling, and trismus associated with third-molar surgery

2017

Background The extraction of impacted third molars is commonly associated to pain, edema, trismus, limited jaw opening and movements. The aim of this retrospective study is to verify if pre-surgical low-level laser therapy (LLLT) associated with the extraction of impacted lower third molars could add benefits to the postoperative symptoms respect LLLT performed only after surgery. Material and Methods Data from 45 patients subjected to a surgical extraction of lower third molars were pooled and divided into three groups. Patients that received only routine management were inserted in the control group. Group 1, were patients that received LLLT immediately after surgery and at 24 hours. In g…

Clinical, radiological and therapeutic features of keratocystic odontogenic tumours: a study over a decade

2014

Factors associated with the potential for recurrence of keratocystic odontogenic tumours (KCOT) still remain to be clearly determined and no consensus exists concerning the management of KCOT. The purpose of this study was to evaluate different clinical factors associated with KCOT and its treatment methods. A retrospective review was performed of 55 cases treated from 2001 to 2010. Of the 55 cases, 27% were associated with an impacted or semi-impacted tooth. The majority of the lesions (82%) were located in tooth-bearing areas, and the overall mandibular to maxilla ratio of tumour occurrence was 5:1. The treatment options included enucleation, marsupialisation, or peripheral ostectomy, wit…

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2020-07-01 Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP) Background: As third molar surgery is the most commonly procedure performed in Dentistry and has been accompanied by serious postoperative disorders such as pain edema and trismus, the study aimed to evaluate if ultrasound device would be able to reduce such postoperative features. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of soft tissue flap elevation, osteotomy and odontosection using piezosurgery versus conventional technique in mandibular third molar extractions. Prospective study of monolithic zirconia crowns: clinical behavior and survival rate at a 5-year follow-up

2020

Purpose To evaluate the clinical behavior and survival of full coverage monolithic zirconia crowns on posterior teeth over a 5-year follow-up. Methods Fifty patients were recruited and underwent restoration with a Lava Plus monolithic zirconia crown (Lava™ Frame Zirconia, 3M Espe, Germany) on premolars or molars. Patients were monitored over a 5-year follow-up (2014-19), recording any biological and/or mechanical complications; these data were used to estimate the crowns' success rate. Periodontal clinical parameters were recorded (pocket probing depth (PPD), plaque index (PLI), bleeding on probing (BOP), and gingival recession (GR)). Wear to the zirconia crowns and antagonist teeth were al…

Can buccal infiltration of articaine replace traditional inferior alveolar nerve block for the treatment of mandibular molars in pediatric patients?:…

2021

Background It is unclear if buccal articaine infiltration can be used as an alternative to standard inferior alveolar nerve block (IANB) for treating mandibular molars in pediatric patients. Therefore, this study aimed to pool evidence to compare the efficacy of buccal infiltration of articaine vs IANB with lignocaine for pediatric dental procedures. Material and Methods We searched the PubMed, Embase, ScienceDirect, CENTRAL, and Google Scholar databases for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing the two techniques in pediatric patients and reporting the success of anesthesia and/or pain during treatment. PRISMA guidelines were followed. Results Seven RCTs were included. Pooled analy…

Variation of the BrO/SO2 molar ratio in the plume of Tungurahua volcano between 2007 and 2017 and its relationship to volcanic activity

2019

International audience; Recent long-term observations of the bromine monoxide (BrO) to sulphur dioxide (SO2) molar ratio in volcanic plumes have suggested a link between changes in the BrO/SO2 ratio and the volcanic activity. Nevertheless, understanding of the mechanisms determining this link is still limited due to the lack of studies on volcanic bromine release from the melt into the atmosphere. We present the results of 10 years (2007–2017) of observations of the BrO/SO2 molar ratio in the volcanic plume of Tungurahua volcano, Ecuador. Following the nearly continuous eruptive activity from 1999 to 2008, Tungurahua showed alternating phases of eruptive activity separated by periods of qui…

Morphology and mechanical properties of extruded ribbons of LDPE/PA6 blends compatibilized with an ethylene-acrylic acid copolymer

2003

Two grades of low density polyethylene (LDPE) were blended with polyamide-6 (PA) in the 75/25 and 25/75 wt/wt ratios and shaped into ribbons with a Brabender single screw extruder. An ethylene-acrylic acid copolymer (EAA) was used in the 2 phr concentration as a compatibilizer precursor (CP). The morphology of the ribbons and its evolution during high temperature annealing were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results confirmed that EAA does actually behave as a reactive compatibilizer for the LDPE/PA blends. In fact, in the presence of EAA, the interfacial adhesion is improved, the dispersion of the minor phase particles is enhanced and their tendency toward fibrilla…
