Aumentare Palermo. Manifesta 12 studios: scenari, progetti e visioni

2018

From june 16th to November 4th , 2018, Manifesta, the european nomadic art Biennial, held Palermo as host city of its 12th edition. Whithin this larger main framework, over the course of two semesters, four international studios from four celebrated schools of architecture have investigated, reflected and proposed future scenarios for the city of Palermo . The works have been displayed in a collective exhibition at the former mill of the Convent of San Antonino – one of UNIPA’s main locations. The University of Palermo has contributed with the project conceived by PalermoLab, a groupment of six design studios (Proff. M. Carta, A. Badami, R. Lecardane, M. Picone, Z. Tesoriere, F. Schilleci) …

LE IPERNATRIEMIE NELL’ANZIANO

2015

Diffusiosmessungen an polymeren in lösung mittels tracer-technik

2007

A cell for measuring coefficients of diffusion and self-diffusion by tracer techniques is described. The cell consists of two Teflon disks and is of the rotational shearing type. The amount of polymer is minimal (about 0.1 ml. for both components). Labeled and unlabeled fractionated polymethacrylate of identical molecular weight distribution was used to determine diffusion coefficients in benzene and toluene. The classical optical measurement is impossible, for these solvents exhibit a refraction index very close to that of polymethacrylate. In acetone, where optical as well as tracer techniques are applicable, the measured diffusion coefficients of the two methods are in good agreement. Al…

Effect of surface treatment with sandblasting and Er,Cr:YSGG laser on bonding of stainless steel orthodontic brackets to silver amalgam

2011

Objectives: Satisfactory bonding of orthodontic attachments to amalgam is a challenge for orthodontists. The aim of this in vitro study was to compare the shear bond strength of stainless steel orthodontic brackets to silver amalgam treated with sandblasting and Er,Cr:YSGG laser. Study Design: Fifty-four amalgam discs were prepared, polished and divided into three groups: In group 1 (the control group) the premolar brackets were bonded using Panavia F resin cement without any surface treatment; in groups 2 and 3, the specimens were subjected to sandblasting and Er,Cr:YSGG laser respectively, before bracket bonding. After immersing in distilled water at 37°C for 24 hours, all the specimens w…

Response of yeast cells to high glucose involves molecular and physiological differences when compared to other osmostress conditions.

2015

Yeast cells can be affected by several causes of osmotic stress, such as high salt, sorbitol or glucose concentrations. The last condition is particularly interesting during natural processes where this microorganism participates. Response to osmostress requires the HOG (High Osmolarity Glycerol) pathway and several transcription factors, including Hot1, which plays a key role in high glucose concentrations. In this work, we describe how the yeast response to osmotic stress shows differences in accordance with the stress agent responsible for it. Compared with other conditions, under high glucose stress, delocalization of MAPK (Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinase) Hog1 is slower, induction of …

Bonding efficacy of an acetone/based etch-and-rinse adhesive after dentin deproteinization

2012

Objectives: to evaluate the effect of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) treatment on dentin bonding by means of shear bond strength (SBS) measurements when using Prime&Bond NT (PB NT) adhesive. Ultrastructure of the interfaces was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Study design: Extracted human third molars were sectioned and ground to expose flat surfaces of superficial or deep dentin. Specimens were randomly assigned to two equal groups, and bonded as follows: (1) according to the manufacturers’ directions, after 35% H3PO4 etching, (2) 5% NaOCl treated for 2 minutes, after 35% H3PO4 etching. Each sample was embedded in a Watanabe shear test assembly for a single plane lap shear. Af…

Ion-exchange fibers and drugs: an equilibrium study

2001

The purpose of this study was to investigate the mechanisms of drug binding into and drug release from cation-exchange fibers in vitro under equilibrium conditions. Ion-exchange groups of the fibers were weakly drug binding carboxylic acid groups (-COOH), strongly drug binding sulphonic acid groups (-SO(3)H), or combinations thereof. Parameters determining the drug absorption and drug release properties of the fibers were: (i) the lipophilicity of the drug (tacrine and propranolol are lipophilic compounds, nadolol is a relatively hydrophilic molecule), (ii) the ion-exchange capacity of the fibers, which was increased by activating the cation-exchange groups with NaOH, (iii) the ionic streng…

FT-IR Investigation of the Urea State in AOT Reversed Micelles

2001

Abstract FT-IR spectra of the urea/sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (AOT)/CCl 4 system as a function of the urea-to-AOT molar ratio ( R urea ) at a fixed AOT concentration ([AOT]=0.1 mol·kg −1 ) have been recorded at 25°C. The experimental data are consistent with the hypothesis that at low R urea values urea is dispersed as monomers among the hydrophilic core of AOT reversed micelles, whereas at R urea >0.13 it is encapsulated as small molecular clusters. These clusters display some departures from the H-bonded structure of the pure solid urea attributable to their small size and to urea–AOT head group interactions. The stretching modes of AOT sulfonate groups are affected by the pr…
