Stereoselective synthesis and properties of 1,3-bis(dicyanomethylidene)indane-5-carboxylic acid acceptor fragment containing nonlinear optical chromo…

2016

A series of organic push–pull type chromophores using indane-1,3-dione 5-carboxylic acid (IDCA) and novel 1,3-bis(dicyanomethylidene)indane 5-carboxylic acid (CICA) electron acceptor fragments have been synthesized and characterized. NMR and X-ray analysis revealed that condensation reactions with the CICA fragment were stereoselective and yielded benzylidenes and azomethines with E double bond configurations. Due to the non-planar geometry these compounds are chiral and were acquired as a racemic mixture. The subsequent functionalization of the carboxylic acid group with 5,5,5-triphenylpentan-1-ol yielded solution-processable glass forming materials (6, 8, 10, 13) with glass transition tem…

Microphase separation in linear multiblock copolymers under poor solvent conditions

2010

Molecular dynamics simulations are used to study the phase behavior of linear multiblock copolymers with two types of monomers, A and B, where the length of the polymer blocks $N_{A}$ and $N_{B}$ ($N_{A}=N_{B}=N$), the number of the blocks $n_{A}$ and $n_{B}$ ($n_{A}=n_{B}=n$), and the solvent quality varies. The fraction $f$ of A-type monomers is kept constant and equal to 0.5. Whereas at high enough temperatures these macromolecules form coil structures, where each block A or B forms rather individual clusters, at low enough temperatures A and B monomers from different blocks can join together forming clusters of A or B monomers. The dependence of the formation of these clusters on the va…

Engineered Multifunctional Nanotools for Biological Applications

2011

Smart multifunctional magnetic nanoparticles are popular candidates for several biological applications owing to their intrinsic magnetic property and diverse applications that range from rare protein separation and biomedical utilization to cancer therapy and diagnostics. A universal protocol, for the development of such nanocarriers, is highly desirable for scientists with different backgrounds so that custom-made multifunctional nanoparticles can be developed to address their needs, among which are the superparamagnetic iron oxide and manganese oxide nanoparticles that are synthesized through high temperature decomposition reactions. However, an interface is needed to present these inorg…

Critical adsorption of a single macromolecule in polymer brushes.

2014

The adsorption of long flexible macromolecules by polymer brush-coated surfaces is studied by molecular dynamics simulations and by calculations using density functional and self-consistent field theories. The case of repulsive interactions between the substrate surface and the monomers of both the brush polymers and the extra chains that can get absorbed into the brush is considered. Under good solvent conditions, critical absorption can occur, if the interaction between the monomers of the brush polymers and the extra chain is (weakly) attractive. It is shown that it is possible to map out the details of the critical absorption transition, if the chain length and/or the grafting density o…

Graphene related magnetic materials: micromechanical exfoliation of 2D layered magnets based on bimetallic anilate complexes with inserted [FeIII(aca…

2015

The syntheses, structures and magnetic properties of the coordination compounds of formula [FeIII(acac2-trien)][MnIICrIII(Cl2 An)3]·(CH3CN)2 (1), [FeIII(acac2-trien)][MnIICrIII(Br2An)3]·(CH3CN)2 (2) and [GaIII(acac2-trien)][MnIICrIII(Br2An)3]·(CH3CN)2 (3) are reported. They exhibit a 2D anionic network formed by Mn(II) and Cr(III) ions linked through anilate ligands, while the [FeIII(acac2-trien)]+ or [GaIII(acac2-trien)]+ charge-compensating cations are placed inside the hexagonal channels of the 2D network, instead of being inserted in the interlamellar spacing. Thus, these crystals are formed by hybrid layers assembled through van der Waals interactions. The magnetic properties indicate …

Single-Molecule Spectroscopy of MEH-PPV Polymer Molecules in Different Host Matrices

2009

Fluorescence emission and excitation spectra of single MEH-PPV molecules dispersed in three different host polymers (PMMA, PS, and Zeonex) have been recorded at 1.2 K. We observed only minor effects of the host matrix on the following parameters: the ratios of single-chromophoric to multichromophoric emission, the widths of the distributions of emission maxima, and the (generally very low) fraction of emission spectra with sharp zero-phonon lines. The differences are tentatively attributed to different conformations of MEH-PPV chains, subtle variations in local chromophore−matrix interactions, and/or different distributions of conjugation lengths of emitting chromophores, respectively. Usin…

Structure Formation of Polymeric Building Blocks: Complex Polymer Architectures

2013

This chapter describes macromolecules with a complex structure, their defined aggregation in solution, their adsorption to surfaces, and their possible aggregation on surfaces. The term “complex structure” implies that the macromolecules show different, distinct structural elements or building blocks on a supra-atomic length scale. Key to understanding the complex structure of macromolecules, their aggregation, and adsorption to surfaces are intra- and intermolecular interactions such as van der Waals, electrostatic, π–π interactions, and hydrogen bonds.

Fabrication of a Silica Coating on Magnetic γ-Fe2O3 Nanoparticles by an Immobilized Enzyme

2008

Silicatein, a hydrolytic protein encountered in marine sponges, was immobilized on maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) nanoparticles that were surface functionalized with a reactive mulfunctional polymer. This polymer carries an anchor group based on dopamine which is capable of binding to the γ-Fe2O3 surface and a reactive functional group which allows binding of various biomolecules onto inorganic nanoparticles. This functional nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) group allows immobilization of His-tagged silicatein on the surface of the γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles. The surface-bound protein retains its native hydrolytic activity to catalyze formation of silica through copolymerization of alkoxysilanes Si(OR)4. Functio…

Isostructural compartmentalized spin-crossover coordination polymers for gas confinement

2016

[EN] Here we present two FeII coordination polymers that possess discrete compartments suitable for CO2 physisorption despite the lack of permanent channels. The two crystalline materials, of general formula [Fe(btzbp)3](X)2 (X = ClO4 or BF4), present voids of ca. 250 Å3, which each can accommodate up to two CO2 molecules. The abrupt spin transition can be modified upon CO2 sorption, and different magnetic behaviour is observed depending on the number of molecules sorbed.

A Self-Assembled 2D Molecule-Based Magnet: The Honeycomb Layered Material {Co3Cl4(H2O)2[Co(Hbbiz)3]2}

2003

Research in the area of molecule-based magnets is rapidly expanding, owing, in part, to numerous breakthroughs in the past decade.[1] The preparation of solid-state architectures of varying dimensionalities from specifically tailored paramagnetic building blocks has proven to be very successful, and also clearly multidisciplinary. Materials science and supramolecular chemistry efforts have joined forces with classical organic and inorganic chemistry in the design of solid-state materials whose magnetic properties rival, and sometimes even exceed, those of classic inorganic solids.[2] The moleculebased strategy allows for the preparation of unusual materials that cannot otherwise be obtained…
