Submarine deposits from pumiceous pyroclastic density currents traveling over water: An outstanding example from offshore Montserrat (IODP 340)

2017

© 2016. Geological Society of America. All right reserved. Pyroclastic density currents have been observed to both enter the sea, and to travel over water for tens of kilometers. Here, we identified a 1.2-m-thick, stratified pumice lapilli-ash cored at Site U1396 offshore Montserrat (Integrated Ocean Drilling Program [IODP] Expedition 340) as being the first deposit to provide evidence that it was formed by submarine deposition from pumice-rich pyroclastic density currents that traveled above the water surface. The age of the submarine deposit is ca. 4 Ma, and its magma source is similar to those for much younger Soufrière Hills deposits, indicating that the island experienced large-magnitu…

Seed morphology of Linaria species from eastern Spain: identification of species and taxonomic implications

2001

Abstract Seed morphology of 15 taxa of Linaria from eastern Spain has been studied using stereoscopic and scanning electron microscopy. Four different morphological types are described according to features of the seed-coat surface. The type that includes winged seeded taxa is divided into three subtypes. Seed morphology of each type and subtype is described, compared, illustrated and discussed according to its taxonomic and biological implications. A key to identify the different species or groups of species is also supplied.

Efectos de una crecida en un cauce antropizado. La riada del Palancia de octubre de 2000

2011

[EN] In October of 2000, the Palància River underwent a major flood, which substantially modified the morphology of the river channel. These changes took place on a river bed previously modified by public works aimed at cleaning and simplifying the river section. The flood partially restored the braided morphology, reconstructing bars and channels. Moreover, river incision processes increased, particularly downstream the Palància bridges. This process reveals a sedimentary deficit caused by reservoirs; land use changes and gravel mining. The aim of this work is to describe these processes of change and to analyze the morphosedimentary consequences, through the interpretation of aerial photo…

Umwelt

2020

The term UMWELT spreads in the German language from the beginning of the nineteenth century, to indicate—both in a general relational and sociological sense, and in more specific reference to the peculiarities of PERCEPTION considered as an essential biological characteristic—the external world that surrounds and accompanies living organisms.

Muratorian urban morphology: the walled city of Ahmedabad

2015

This paper investigates the complexity of the urban fabric, from the urban scale to the building and neighbourhood scale, by using the concepts and tools of urban morphology according to the Muratorian School. Specifically, basic concepts such as ‘urban polarities’, ‘routes hierarchical system’ and ‘building neighbourhood’ are used. They are deployed in the walled city of Ahmedabad, India, which has a rich architectural heritage clearly recognizable in Indo-Islamic monuments and particularly in aggregative structures called pols.

Comparison of growth & function of endothelial progenitor cells cultured on deproteinized bovine bone modified with covalently bound fibronectin …

2016

Objectives The objective of this study was to assess and compare the growth and function of Endothelial Progenitor Cells (EPCs) cultured on covalently bonded Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) and covalently bonded Fibronectin (FN) coating on deproteinized bovine bone (DBB) (test samples), compared to non-modified DBB blocks (control sample). Materials and methods The test samples were prepared by plasma polymerization of allylamine onto DBB blocks. Group1 of test samples were prepared with VEGF coating (VEGF-DBB) where as the Group2 test samples were coated with FN (FN-DBB). Non-modified DBB blocks served as a Control. EPCs were isolated and cultivated from buffy coats of peripheral…

Quantitative Bestimmung der Hirnperfusion mit Hilfe der digitalen Subtraktionsangiographie (DSA)

1990

In a search for a reliable and relatively non-invasive method for quantifying cerebral perfusion, we examined the possible role of DSA. By using special software, it is possible to demonstrate vascular morphology and obtain functional data concerning blood flow. Regions of interest are used for obtaining time-density curves and these are evaluated by a formula designed by Meier and Zierler. Perfusion through the arterial territory in both cerebral hemispheres was correlated with the clinical symptoms of the patients and with the morphological findings. Difficulties and problems are described and discussed.

The role of pedogenic overprinting in the obliteration of parent material in some polygenetic landscapes of Sicily (Italy)

2016

Abstract Many soils older than the Holocene have experienced several changes, and possess properties that may be due to the complex effect of several stages of soil development; these soils are called polygenetic. It is still rather unclear, however, if, as time elapses, pedogenic processes tend to diverge generating different soils, or converge towards increasingly similar soils. We studied five pedons (37°60′N, 13°90′E) exposed to present weathering simultaneously since the Holocene but located on Upper Miocene or Holocene parent material. Their XRD and FTIR clay mineralogy reveal an overall homogeneity; smectites, calcite and gypsum reach the thermodynamic equilibrium, a slight undersatu…

Full-Waveform Terrestrial Laser Scanning for Extracting a High-Resolution 3D Topographic Model: a Case Study on an Area of Archaeological Significance

2014

AbstractThis paper describes a method, which uses full-waveform terrestrial laser scanning to survey the surface of the slope below the Temple of Juno, located in the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento (Sicily, Southern Italy). The surface is characterized by the presence of large rock blocks, which have fallen down from the upper side; possible further detachments of rock blocks would cause a situation of general instability, with a very high risk to the archaeological structures in the near future. The methodology was designed to evaluate the potential of full-waveform laser scanning technology for the production of a very high resolution 3D topographic model of the slope, to be used as a…
