A Freely Available Morphological Analyzer, Disambiguator and Context Sensitive Lemmatizer for German

1998

In this paper we present Morphy, an integrated tool for German morphology, part-of-speech tagging and context-sensitive lemmatization. Its large lexicon of more than 320,000 word forms plus its ability to process German compound nouns guarantee a wide morphological coverage. Syntactic ambiguities can be resolved with a standard statistical part-of-speech tagger. By using the output of the tagger, the lemmatizer can determine the correct root even for ambiguous word forms. The complete package is freely available and can be downloaded from the World Wide Web.

PLA based biocomposites reinforced with Posidonia oceanica leaves

2018

Abstract Biocomposites can valorize some natural products related to natural processes or crop and waste industries. In this work, leaves of Posidonia oceanica (PO), dominant sea grass in the Mediterranean Sea, were used to prepare PLA based biocomposites. Materials were prepared by melt mixing PLA with PO as filler. The morphology as well as the mechanical and thermal properties of PLA/PO composites were evaluated and related with the influence of the content and size of PO. Moreover, the experimental elastic moduli of the biocomposites was modelled employing the Halpin–Tsai (HT) model. Furthermore, in order to take into consideration the high porosity of PO leaves, the HT parameters relat…

Halloysite nanotubes: a green resource for materials and life sciences

2020

Clay minerals are considered one of the materials of the 20th century for their peculiar physico-chemical features. Among them, halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) are an emerging nanomaterial with a particular tubular structure that makes them a low cost and valuable alternative to the most common carbon nanotubes. Due to their tubular morphology, HNTs are employed in several fields acting as nanocontainers for different compounds for applications in drug carrier and delivery fields, catalysis, and as filler for polymeric matrices. The modification of HNTs’ surfaces allows to the synthesis of different nanoarchitectures that can improve the mechanical and thermal performance of polymer as well as …

Early Vision and Soft Computing

2002

The term soft-computing has been introduced by Zadeh in 1994. Soft-computing provides an appropriate paradigm to program malleable and smooth concepts. For example, it can be used to introduce flexibility in artificial systems and possibly to improve their Intelligent Quotient. Aim of this paper is to describe the applicability of soft-computing to early vision problems. The good performance of this approach is claimed by the fact that digital images are examples of fuzzy entities, where geometry of shapes are not always describable by exact equations and their approximation can be very complex.

Analysis of Hydrological and Landslide Hazards at Castellammare Del Golfo (Northern Sicily)

2014

Catastrophic floods or mass movements occur all too often owing to small streams overflowing their banks or to slope instabilities whose evolution has a more or less tragic impact on people and property; these events are the consequence of a poor understanding of the dynamics of geomorphological processes and of the laws governing them. This paper is focused on the case study of Castellammare del Golfo, a town in the province of Trapani. The study analysed the geological risk due to the geomorphology of the area and to the urban sprawl that it has experienced in the past decades. Geomorphological processes have a strategic role to play in spatial planning and management instruments and in t…

New Flow-Resistance Law for Steep Mountain Streams Based on Velocity Profile

2017

This paper deduces a new flow-resistance equation for open-channel flow applying dimensional analysis and self-similarity theory. The incomplete self-similarity hypothesis is used to establish the flow velocity distribution whose integration gives the theoretical expression of the Darcy-Weisbach friction factor. The theoretical resistance equation then is tested by the available field measurements of flow velocity, water depth, river width and bed slope carried out in 653 reaches of several Canadian mountain streams. A relationship between the G function of the velocity profile and the channel slope and the flow Froude number is also established. The analysis shows that the Darcy- Weisbach …

Flow Resistance in Step-Pool Rills

2017

Rills evolve morphologically, and the adjustment of rill channel geometry to flow affects the relationships among velocity, discharge, and slope. The resistance to flow in step-pool rills is mainly due to form-induced mechanisms and, in comparison, grain resistance is of minor significance. Previous studies on rill flow resistance have been performed exclusively for grainresistance conditions and use a stream flow equation. In this study, a new flow resistance equation, deduced by applying dimensional analysis and self-similarity theory, was applied to rill flow in step-pool channels. First, the incomplete self-similarity hypothesis was used for establishing a power flow velocity profile wh…

Monitoring Human Neutrophil Differentiation by Digital Holographic Microscopy

2021

We report on the usefulness of digital holographic microscopy (DHM) for the assessment of human neutrophil differentiation from myeloid cells. The cell and nuclear regions have been designated by image segmentation of the optical phase function, and the changes of the cell nucleus morphology in relation to the whole cell morphology have been examined during the process of granulocytic differentiation into mature neutrophils in PLB-985 cell line. Nucleus phase volume and circularity and the ratios between the nucleus and the cell projected area and volume provide a reliable set of parameters to characterize the maturation process. As control, cell differentiation has been monitored in parall…

Morphology in phonology. Introduction

2005

This fourth volume of Catalan Journal of Linguistics is devoted to a topic discussed at length in the literature but which nevertheless remains a challenge for any view of phonology: the morphology-phonology interaction. The papers collected address two related issues, the role of morphological information in phonology and the role of phonological information in morphology. The first six articles (i.e. McCarthy, Wheeler, Downing, van Oostendorp, José and Auger, and Rice) deal with the former topic; the last three (i.e. Bertinetto and Jetchev, Pérez Saldanya and Vallès, and Viaplana), with the latter. Several papers (Wheeler, van Oostendorp, Rice, Bertinetto and Jetchev, Pérez Saldanya and V…

School choice criteria and school segregation in the city of Valencia

2022
