2016

The first burrower bug species recorded in Guinea-Bissau, Chilocoris serratus n. sp., is described and compared with morphologically related species. Additionally, an annotated checklist of Afrotropical species of the genus Chilocoris is provided.

Overionization in X-ray spectra: a new paradigm for Mixed-Morphology SNRs

2011

Mixed-morphology SNRs are characterized by a shell-like radio emission, a centrally peaked X-ray morphology, and by interaction with molecular clouds. Many models have been proposed to explain these peculiar remnants, but their physical origin is still unclear. The recent discovery of over-ionized (i. e. recombining) ejecta in 3 mixed-morphology SNRs has dramatically challenged all the previous models and opened up new, unexpected scenarios. I review the main properties of these remnants and their peculiar X-ray spectral properties. I also discuss the hydrodynamic model developed to explain the presence of over-ionized ejecta in W49B and present a list of open issues that still need to be c…

The diagnosis of polycystic ovary syndrome in adolescents

2010

In women, the definition of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) has become broad and includes several possible phenotypes. Because several features of PCOS may be in evolution in adolescents, we suggest that only firm criteria should be used to make a diagnosis of PCOS during adolescence. Hyperandrogenism, oligomenorrhea, and ovarian morphology change during adolescence and are discussed individually. Adolescents with incomplete criteria for a firm diagnosis of PCOS should be followed up carefully and may be diagnosed at a later time.

Three-dimensional image analytical detection of intussusceptive pillars in murine lung

2015

A variety of diseases can lead to loss of lung tissue. Currently, this can be treated only symptomatically. In mice, a complete compensatory lung growth within 21 days after resection of the left lung can be observed. Understanding and transferring this concept of compensatory lung growth to humans would greatly improve therapeutic options. Lung growth is always accompanied by a process called angiogenesis forming new capillary blood vessels from preexisting ones. Among the processes during lung growth, the formation of transluminal tissue pillars within the capillary vessels (intussusceptive pillars) is observed. Therefore, pillars can be understood as an indicator for active angiogenesis …

Among other considerations, in this paper the author tries to point out some specific and linguistic features of the Hippocratic treatrises De fistulis and De haemorrhoidibus, both among the surgical trea…

Introduction

2014

Studying Ancient Greek offers new insights for linguistic theory. Thanks to the amount of available written data of a large corpus at our disposal, it is possible for a linguist to test hypotheses from modern theories in order to explain language phenomena, without disregarding a description according to methodologies adopted in traditional analyses of ancient languages. In particular, the morphological complexity of the Greek verb with its highly intricate inflectional system provide a valuable basis for an in-depth-analysis of the mechanisms which regulate the functioning of a language in the mind of the speaker. Crucially, in recent times also deductive methodologies adopted in the gener…

Introduction

2018

The relationship between the concepts of form and function goes through the history of western thinking and continues to be a stimulus and a theoretical constraint of great significance. This volume allows us to rethink this topic in a highly innovative perspective, focusing on the aesthetic dimension of contemporary research, and extensively investigating a variety of research approaches, from the history of art and its foundations up to anthropology, from the study of ancient and modern material culture, up to design and architecture.

The Bua Group noun class system: Looking for a historical interpretation

2020

International audience; The way Bua languages express number on nouns mostly consists ofalternating suffi xes that bear witness of a former classifi cation system. However,Kulaal is the only present-day language where these markers are not frozen butactually trigger agreement with free, optional determiners that follow the noun andmay show some formal affi nity with its suffi x. For several reasons, previous attemptsat reconstructing a historical noun morphology common to all Bua languagesconsidered the sole suffi xes and neglected the determiners present in Kulaal. But,as is argued in the present paper, more recent data show that, in some cases, presentdaysuffi xes may result from the asso…
