Impact of thrombectomy on distales embolization during ST elevation myocardial infaction
2017
Percutaneous primary coronary angioplasty is the cornerstone for acute coronary syndrome with ST segment elevation (STEMI) treatment with proven efficacy to restore flow in culprit coronary artery. A TIMI (thrombolysis in myocardial infarction) 3 flow is generally restored in more than 90 % of patients. However, distal embolization of an angiographically visible thrombus (EDAV) has been identified as one of the major complications of primary angioplasty in STEMI because it limits the effectiveness of myocardial reperfusion and leads to a worse prognosis. Our objective was to determine the frequency of EDAVs during primary angioplasty for STEMI and to identify the determining factors. We evalu…
Tracce dell’arcaico locativo nell’opera di Luca Matranga
2021
PHENOLOGICAL AND MORPHOLOGICAL STUDIES OF PISTACIA TEREBINTHUS L. GENOTYPES NATIVE OF BULGARIA WITH DIFFERENT ASSET OF TREE SEXUALITY
2009
The genus Pistacia is a dioecious species staminate and pistillate inflorescences born on different trees and are wind pollinated. In pistachio orchards, female and male flowering periods are often not synchronized. In fact, male trees spread their pollen before the flowers of female trees become receptive. Pollination is commonly devoted to spontaneous males of P. terebinthus. In this research authors refer to the results obtained observing the phenology of the blooming period of monoicous genotypes of P. terebinthus discovered in the Rhodope Mountains (Bulgaria). In some selected trees phenological stages have been observed in situ. The blooming date is influenced by local environmental c…

A new species of Ferula (Apiaceae) from Malta
2018
Ferula melitensis, a new species from the Malta Archipelago, is described and illustrated. It belongs to the taxonomic group of F. communis, showing close relationships mainly with F. tunetana, F. arrigonii, F. communis s.str. and F. glauca, from which it differs in several features regarding the stem, leaves (mainly for shape and size of terminal segments), flowers and mericarps; other significant differences regard the ecology and phenology. The investigations, carried out on living plants, herbarium material and literature data, regard the morphological analysis of vegetative and reproductive structures, the anatomy of terminal leaf segments and mericarps, as well as the shape and size o…
Comparative leaf micromorphology, anatomy and architecture in some Mediterranean species of Pancratium (Amaryllidaceae).
2015
Pancratium L. is the most widespread genus of the Eurasian clade of Amaryllidaceae. It includes about 20 species of bulbous herbaceous geophytes, naturally occurring only in Macaronesia, Mediterranean basin, and throughout Africa to tropical Asia, but also introduced and cultivated in many countries (De Castro & al.2012). Pancratium species generally occur in specialized habitats, such as dry rocky slopes, cliffs, sandy seashores, coastal dunes, desert sandy soils. Leaf features are the main adaptive strategies of these plants in response to the numerous environmental constraints. Leaves in Pancratium show a gross morphological identity being usually glaucous, ensiform, parallel-veined, pla…
Developmental integration in a functional unit: deciphering processes from adult dental morphology
2014
The evolution of mammalian dentition is constrained by functional necessity and by the non-independence of morphological structures. Efficient chewing implies coherent tooth coordination from development to motion, involving covariation patterns (integration) within dental parts. Using geometric morphometrics, we investigate the modular organization of the highly derived vole dentition. Integration patterns between and within the upper and lower molar rows are analyzed to identify potential modules and their origins (functional and developmental). Results support an integrated adult dentition pattern for both developmental and functional aspects. The integration patterns between opposing mo…
Evaluation of criteria for species delimitation of bagworm moths (Lepidoptera: Psychidae)
2014
Accurate identification of species is fundamental for biological research and necessary for species conservation. DNA bar- coding is particularly useful when identification using morphological characteristics is laborious and/or unreliable. However, bar- codes for species are dependent on the availability of reference sequences from correctly identified specimens. The traditional use of morphology to delimit the species boundaries of Finnish bagworm moths (Lepidoptera: Psychidae: Naryciinae: Dahliciini) is contro- versial because there is overlap in their morphological characteristics. In addition, there are no suitable molecular markers. We veri- fied the delimitation of seven out of eight…
