ABSTRACT Listeria monocytogenes is involved in food-borne illness with a high mortality rate. The persistence of the pathogen along the food chain can be associated with its ability to form biofilms on inert surfaces. While most of the phenotypes associated with biofilms are related to their spatial organization, most published data comparing biofilm formation by L. monocytogenes isolates are based on the quantitative crystal violet assay, which does not give access to structural information. Older peoples' independent living in their own homes and their ability to move around and maintain social relations in their communities have been acknowledged as important aims to support their well-being. In this article, we study Special Transport Services as a means to support older persons with ‘aging in place’ – that is, within their communities. Experimental evidence suggests that adenosine is involved in the regulation of gastrointestinal functions. In the present study we examined the influence of adenosine on the contractile activity of mouse duodenum longitudinal muscle. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction revealed the expression of all the adenosine receptors in whole thickness duodenum, being the A2B receptors expressed only in the neuromuscular layer. Mechanical activity of longitudinally oriented duodenal segments was recorded in vitro as changes in isometric tension. Inhibition of bacterial virulence factors of foodborne pathogens by paprika (Capsicum annuum L.) extracts

Abstract Capsicum annuum extracts of different polarities were tested for their antimicrobial, antibiofilm, and anti-Quorum sensing (QS) activity against several pathogenic microorganisms and possible toxic effects using an in vivo model (Galleria mellonella L.). Hexane (HE) and Chloroform extract (CE) were the most active in inhibiting biofilm formation of the eight bacteria tested, with inhibition percentages between 22 and 88% for a concentration of 100 μg/mL. Breast cancer cell growth/motility is influenced by metal compounds

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a highly "aggressive" malignant neoplasm with limited treatment options due to the lack of expression of estrogen and progesterone receptors and HER2/neu. In search of novel molecules displaying anti-TNBC activities, the TNBC cell line MDA-MB231 was exposed to cadmium chloride and/or manganese chloride, and a biological characterization of the effect observed was performed. The data obtained demonstrate a cytotoxic effect exerted by cadmium chloride with drastic changes affecting gene expressions and production of reactive oxygen species.
