Does Formal Musical Structure Affect Perception of Musical Expressiveness?

1996

The aim of the study was to assess the effect of systematic modifications in global musical structures on perceived expressiveness. Recorded performances of piano pieces of Bach, Mozart and Schonberg were segmented into short chunks of six seconds in average. These chunks were linked either in a forward order (Original version) or in a backward order (Inverted version). In the inverted version, the formal global structure of the pieces was destroyed, but the superficial features and the local structures inside the chunks were unaltered. Forty non-musician subjects were required to rate the musical expressiveness of these pieces on 29 semantic scales. Half listened to the three original ver…

Aldehyde dehydrogenase and HSP90 co-localize in human glioblastoma biopsy cells.

2013

The concept of a stem cell subpopulation as understood from normal epithelial tissue or bone marrow function has been extended to our understanding of cancer tissue and is now the target of treatment efforts specifically directed to this subpopulation. In glioblastoma, as well as in other cancers, increased expression of aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) has been found localized within a minority sub-population of tumor cells which demonstrate stem cell properties. A separate body of research associated increased expression of heat-shock protein-90 (HSP90) with stem cell attributes. We present here results from our initial immunohistochemistry study of human glioblastoma biopsy tissue where bot…

Una pedagogia della vita emotiva

2014

Human Monocytes, but not Dendritic Cells Derived from Them, Are Defective in Base Excision Repair and Hypersensitive to Methylating Agents

2007

Abstract Monocytes and dendritic cells are key players in the immune response. Because dendritic cells drive the tumor host defense, it is important that monocytes and dendritic cells survive cytotoxic tumor therapy. Although most of the anticancer drugs target DNA, the DNA repair capacity of monocytes and dendritic cells has not yet been investigated. We studied the sensitivity of monocytes and monocyte-derived dendritic cells against various genotoxic agents and found monocytes to be more sensitive to overall cell kill and apoptosis upon exposure to methylating agents (e.g., N-methyl-N′-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine, methyl methanesulfonate, and the anticancer drug temozolomide). On the other …

Karl Pearson diceva «Statistics is the grammar of Science» e chi può non definire la musica come Scienza?

Microspore Embryogenesis in Citrus

2021

This chapter deals with microspore embryogenesis in Citrus. Microspore embryogenesis allows to induce immature gametes (microspores) and to deviate them, in this case, the male one, from the normal gametophytic developmental route in the direction of the sporophytic one, yielding homozygous organisms (embryos and plants).

Dosage-dependent roles of the Cwt1 transcription factor for cell wall architecture, morphogenesis, drug sensitivity and virulence in Candida albicans.

2009

The Cwt1 transcription factor is involved in cell wall architecture of the human fungal pathogen Candida albicans. We demonstrate here that deficiency of Cwt1 leads to decreased β1,6-glucan in the cell wall, while mannoproteins are increased in the cell wall of exponentially growing cells and are released into the medium of stationary phase cells. Hyphal morphogenesis of cwt1 mutants is reduced on the surfaces of some inducing media. Unexpectedly, the CWT1/cwt1 heterozygous strains shows some stronger in vitro phenotypes compared to the homozygous mutant. The heterozygous but not the homozygous strain is also strongly impaired for its virulence in a mouse model of systemic infection. We sug…

Antifungal activity of natamycin and development of an edible film based on hydroxyethylcellulose to avoid Penicillium spp. growth on low-moisture mo…

2022

Abstract This study aimed to investigate natamycin's in vitro antifungal activity against Penicillium strains and determine its antifungal effect on Mozzarella cheese slices contaminated with P. commune. Besides, the residual content of natamycin in the samples was assessed during the storage. Natamycin was either sprayed on the cheese surface or incorporated into an edible hydroxyethylcellulose film at concentrations of 0, 0.25, 0.5, and 1 mg/dm2. Natamycin showed an antifungal effect against all Penicillium strains with MIC values ranging from 1.6 to 3.1 μg/mL and MFC values ranging from 12.5 to 200.0 μg/mL. Moreover, both applied techniques significantly (p ≤ 0.05) reduced the population…

Pyrrolo[2,1-d][1,2,3,5]tetrazinones deaza analogues of temozolomide with potent antitumor activity

2000

The title compounds, that hold the deaza skeleton of temozolomide, exhibited potent in vitro antiproliferative activity. An evaluation of such a biological activity indicates that the mode of action of these compounds differs from that of temozolomide and is also mechanistically unrelated to that of any known antitumor drug.
