Sentence-Level Effects of Literary Genre: Behavioral and Electrophysiological Evidence
2017
The current study used event-related brain potentials (ERPs) and behavioral measures to examine effects of genre awareness on sentence processing and evaluation. We hypothesized that genre awareness modulates effects of genre-typical manipulations. We manipulated instructions between participants, either specifying a genre (poetry) or not (neutral). Sentences contained genre-typical variations of semantic congruency (congruent/incongruent) and morpho-phonological features (archaic/contemporary inflections). Offline ratings of meaningfulness (n=64/group) showed higher average ratings for semantically incongruent sentences in the poetry vs. neutral condition. ERPs during sentence reading (n=2…
Science of success: An introduction
2019
Performance and success are often used as synonyms to express individual accomplishment. However, from a scientific perspective they cover very different concepts: performance is about individual effort, while success is a collective quantity capturing the community's acknowledgment of effort and performance. In these notes, we investigate the quantitative rules that govern both, trying to model their interdependence within the framework of complex systems. We explore different fields, ranging from online crowdfunding platforms to academia, with the idea of applying scientifically sound methods to uncover the universal laws that determine the allocation of merit in science and society.
Screen-based activities and physical complaints among adolescents from the Nordic countries
2010
BACKGROUND: A positive association between time spent on sedentary screen-based activities and physical complaints has been reported, but the cumulative association between different types of screen-based activities and physical complaints has not been examined thoroughly. METHODS: The cross-sectional association between screen-based activity and physical complaints (backache and headache) among students was examined in a sample of 31022 adolescents from Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland and Greenland, as part of the Health behaviour in school-aged children 2005/06 (HBSC) study. Daily hours spent on screen-based activities and levels of physical complaints were assessed using self-r…

Who Can See My Stuff? : Online Self-Disclosure and Gender Differences on Facebook
2018
This study investigates the gendered privacy practices and concerns on Facebook, by leaning on the idea of privacy management as a form of digital labour. We analyse if young Facebook users are more concerned about the privacy against other users than against Facebook as a company or against third-party partners. We also analyse if privacy concerns and visibility rules are differentiated by gender. Using a structured online survey, we collected responses from a sample of 813 Italian university students (aged 18-34). Our results show that the respondents have just slightly more privacy concerns against other users than against Facebook, and much less against third-party partners. Unlike a ma…
Risk Factors for Parental Burnout among Finnish Parents: The Role of Socially Prescribed Perfectionism
2019
Abstract Objectives Although parental burnout can have detrimental consequences to families, the investigation of the syndrome is still in its infancy. The present study investigated what are the key family background variables that contribute to parental burnout among Finnish parents. Moreover, we investigated how self-oriented and socially prescribed perfectionism uniquely and interactively relate to parental burnout over and above the impacts of background variables. Methods Questionnaire-based data was collected from 1725 parents (91% mothers) and analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM). Results The results showed that when several family- and child-related background variable…
