Adsorption equilibria of water vapor on cork.

2010

International audience; We report here for the first time a complete thermodynamic study of water vapor adsorption on crude cork powder and plate. Adsorption−desorption isotherms were accurately measured by thermogravimetry at 283, 298, and 313 K in a large range of relative pressure. Adsorption enthalpies were determined by calorimetry as a function of loading. Adsorption−desorption isotherms exhibit a hysteresis due to the swelling of the material. The influence of the presence of lenticels on the adsorption properties of cork is found to be negligible. A detailed analysis and interpretation of adsorption data allow proposal of an adsorption mechanism in two steps. (i) First, water adsorb…

On Some Misconceptions Concerning Digital Banking and Alternative Delivery Channels

2016

A great deal of conceptual confusion surrounds the notions of digital banking and innovative alternative delivery channels that support banking and other financial transactions globally. The authors contend that the concepts of digital banking and associated delivery channels are ambiguous and restrictive; their usability has been undermined and their purpose and objective have, to a large extent, been misunderstood. Against this backdrop, the authors offer an inclusive definition of digital banking and delivery channels and provide logical explanations of these terms that can benefit scholars, the telecommunication sector, the banking industry, policy makers, and service providers (in term…

Energy Efficient Optimization for Computation Offloading in Fog Computing System

2017

In this paper, we investigate the energy efficient computation offloading scheme in a multi-user fog computing system. We consider the users need to make the decision on whether to offload the tasks to the fog node nearby, based on the energy consumption and delay constraint. In particular, we utilize queuing theory to bring a thorough study on the energy consumption and execution delay of the offloading process. Two queuing models are applied respectively to model the execution processes at the mobile device (MD) and fog node. Based on the theoretical analysis, an energy efficient optimization problem is formulated with the objective to minimize the energy consumption subjects to execution…

A Sequential Game Approach for Computation-Offloading in an UAV Network

2017

International audience; Small drones are currently emerging as versatile nascent technology that can be used in exploration and surveillance missions. However, most of the underlying applications require very often complex and time-consuming calculations. Although, the limited resources available onboard the small drones, their mobility, the computation delays and energy consumption make the operation of these applications very challenging. Nevertheless, computation-offloading solutions provide feasible resolves to mitigate the issues facing these constrained devices. In this context, we address in this paper the problem of offloading highly intensive computation tasks, performed by a fleet…

Green telecommunication networks to mitigate CO 2 emissions

2020

Reducing energy consumption has become a hot research topic in the past few years. The concept of Green Networking is gaining popularity not only because of the growing environmental awareness worldwide but also the economic opportunities and benefits of reducing energy consumption in the ICT industry. In this work, we will identify the importance of green research and explore the state of the art in the field with a special focus on green base stations. After identifying the key green metrics, we will explore the energy efficiency of traditional base stations and review the main possible improvements to its current structure as a standalone unit as well as the base station as a component i…

Smartphone Apps for the Treatment of Mental Disorders: Systematic Review

2020

Background Smartphone apps are an increasingly popular means for delivering psychological interventions to patients suffering from a mental disorder. In line with this popularity, there is a need to analyze and summarize the state of the art, both from a psychological and technical perspective. Objective This study aimed to systematically review the literature on the use of smartphones for psychological interventions. Our systematic review has the following objectives: (1) analyze the coverage of mental disorders in research articles per year; (2) study the types of assessment in research articles per mental disorder per year; (3) map the use of advanced technical features, such as sensors…

Hybrid Deep Shallow Network for Assessment of Depression Using Electroencephalogram Signals

2020

Depression is a mental health disorder characterised by persistently depressed mood or loss of interest in activities resulting impairment in daily life significantly. Electroencephalography (EEG) can assist with the accurate diagnosis of depression. In this paper, we present two different hybrid deep learning models for classification and assessment of patient suffering with depression. We have combined convolutional neural network with Gated recurrent units (RGUs), thus the proposed network is shallow and much smaller in size in comparison to its counter LSTM network. In addition to this, proposed approach is less sensitive to parameter settings. Extensive experiments on EEG dataset shows…

Analysis of some renewable energy uses and demand side measures for hotels on small Mediterranean islands: A case study

2018

Abstract Tourist activity strongly influences the energy consumption and the overall load profile of communities with isolated energy systems. One example is hotel sectors on small islands that are not connected to mainland energy distribution grids. The use of solar energy systems could be a smart option for reducing energy consumption and tackling seasonal fluctuation. The operation of a weak and isolated electric grid requires attention to the management of power profiles in very short time frames. Energy storage (thermal or electric), as well as building automation control technologies, can be utilised for these aims. In this context, the present paper illustrates a study conducted at a…

Life Cycle Energy Consumption and Carbon Dioxide Emissions of Agricultural Residue Feedstock for Bioenergy

2021

The depletion of fossil fuels and climate change concerns are drivers for the development and expansion of bioenergy. Promoting biomass is vital to move civilization toward a low-carbon economy. To meet European Union targets, it is required to increase the use of agricultural residues (including straw) for power generation. Using agricultural residues without accounting for their energy consumed and carbon dioxide emissions distorts the energy and environmental balance, and their analysis is the purpose of this study. In this paper, a life cycle analysis method is applied. The allocation of carbon dioxide emissions and energy inputs in the crop production by allocating between a product (g…
