Synergetic and redundant information flow detected by unnormalized Granger causality: application to resting state fMRI
2015
Objectives: We develop a framework for the analysis of synergy and redundancy in the pattern of information flow between subsystems of a complex network. Methods: The presence of redundancy and/or synergy in multivariate time series data renders difficult to estimate the neat flow of information from each driver variable to a given target. We show that adopting an unnormalized definition of Granger causality one may put in evidence redundant multiplets of variables influencing the target by maximizing the total Granger causality to a given target, over all the possible partitions of the set of driving variables. Consequently we introduce a pairwise index of synergy which is zero when two in…
Bifurcation analysis of a TaO memristor model
2019
This paper presents a study of bifurcation in the time-averaged dynamics of TaO memristors driven by narrow pulses of alternating polarities. The analysis, based on a physics-inspired model, focuses on the stable fixed points and on how these are affected by the pulse parameters. Our main finding is the identification of a driving regime when two stable fixed points exist simultaneously. To the best of our knowledge, such bistability is identified in a single memristor for the first time. This result can be readily tested experimentally, and is expected to be useful in future memristor circuit designs.
Imaging of metabolic and overload disorders in tissues and organs
2023
Metabolic and overload disorders are a heterogeneous group of relatively uncommon but important diseases. While imaging plays a key role in the early detection and accurate diagnosis in specific organs with a pivotal role in several metabolic pathways, most of these diseases affect different tissues as part of a systemic syndromes. Moreover, since the symptoms are often vague and phenotypes similar, imaging alterations can present as incidental findings, which must be recognized and interpreted in the light of further biochemical and histological investigations. Among imaging modalities, MRI allows, thanks to its multiparametric properties, to obtain numerous information on tissue compositi…
Robustness Analysis of DCE-MRI-Derived Radiomic Features in Breast Masses: Assessing Quantization Levels and Segmentation Agreement
2022
Featured Application The use of highly robust radiomic features is fundamental to reduce intrinsic dependencies and to provide reliable predictive models. This work presents a study on breast tumor DCE-MRI considering the radiomic feature robustness against the quantization settings and segmentation methods. Machine learning models based on radiomic features allow us to obtain biomarkers that are capable of modeling the disease and that are able to support the clinical routine. Recent studies have shown that it is fundamental that the computed features are robust and reproducible. Although several initiatives to standardize the definition and extraction process of biomarkers are ongoing, th…

Nuovi gel di Fricke ad alta sensibilità e bassa diffusione per dosimetria 3D tramite MRI
2017
One of the most recent and promising developments in radiotherapy dosimetry was the introduction of 3D radiationsensitive gels. These gels present tissue equivalent composition and density, so they also serve as phantoms, and their response is largely independent of radiation quality and dose rate. Some gels are infused with ferrous sulfate and rely on the radiation-induced oxidation of ferrous ions to ferric ions (Fricke-gel). In this work Fricke gel dosimeters produced with a matrix of poly-vinyl alcohol (PVA) cross-linked with glutaraldehyde (GTA) were analyzed with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This work focused on the analysis of the temporal diffusion of ferric ions through PVA-GT…

Assessing High-Order Interdependencies Through Static O-Information Measures Computed on Resting State fMRI Intrinsic Component Networks
2022
Resting state brain networks have reached a strong popularity in recent scientific endeavors due to their feasibility to characterize the metabolic mechanisms at the basis of neural control when the brain is not engaged in any task. The evaluation of these states, consisting in complex physiological processes employing a large amount of energy, is carried out from diagnostic images acquired through resting-state functionalmagnetic resonance (RS-fMRI) on different populations of subjects. In the present study, RS-fMRI signals from the WU-MinnHCP 1200 Subjects Data Release of the Human Connectome Project were studied with the aim of investigating the high order organizational structure of the…
