A glimpse into the socialization of bilingual youngsters as interpreters: the case of Latino bilinguals brokering communication for their families an…

2010

Work on bilinguals who act as family interpreters, while not focused particularly on the development of translation and interpreting abilities, contributes to our understanding of life experiences of the individuals who begin to interpret early in their lives (Valdés and Angelelli 2003). With some exceptions (Harris 1977, 1978, 1980, 1992; Toury 1984, 1995) very little has been written about the lived experiences of young interpreters and/or about their socialization as family interpreters. Since most of the community interpreters of today were interpreters in their late childhood and adolescence, getting a glimpse into their lives and experiences may help researchers (and teachers of inter…

Influence of the Main Phospholipid (MPL) fromThermoplasma Acidophilumand of Liposomes from MPL on Living Cells: Cytotoxicity and Mutagenicity

1993

AbstractLiposomes of the main phospholipid (MPL) from the archaebacterium Thermplasma acidophilum were investigated for their interference with living cells. Growth of mouse lymphoma cells L5178Y, permanent hamster fibroblasts V79, Ehrlich-mouse-ascites tumor (EMAT) cells and a variety of other celltypes was not influenced by these liposomes. Mutagenicity and antimutagenic efficacy were tested with Salmonella typhimurium TA100 in the “Ames plate-incorporation test”. No cytotoxicity and mutagenicity of liposomes from MPL was detected. The influence of MPL liposomes on ion transport, intracellular pH, electrolytes, membrane potential, energy metabolism, and the biosynthesis of proteins and nu…

Muscle Activity and Inactivity Periods during Normal Daily Life

2013

Recent findings suggest that not only the lack of physical activity, but also prolonged times of sedentary behaviour where major locomotor muscles are inactive, significantly increase the risk of chronic diseases. The purpose of this study was to provide details of quadriceps and hamstring muscle inactivity and activity during normal daily life of ordinary people. Eighty-four volunteers (44 females, 40 males, 44.1±17.3 years, 172.3±6.1 cm, 70.1±10.2 kg) were measured during normal daily life using shorts measuring muscle electromyographic (EMG) activity (recording time 11.3±2.0 hours). EMG was normalized to isometric MVC (EMGMVC) during knee flexion and extension, and inactivity threshold o…

Warm-Up and Hamstrings Stiffness, Stress Relaxation, Flexibility, and Knee Proprioception in Young Soccer Players

2023

Context Nerves or fascia may limit motion in young soccer players, thereby contributing to frequent hamstrings injuries. Nerve-gliding exercises and self-myofascial release techniques may enhance range of motion (ROM). Objective To compare the immediate effect of foam rolling (FR) and neurodynamic nerve gliding (NDNG) on hamstrings passive stiffness, viscoelasticity, flexibility, and proprioception during the warm-up of soccer players. Design Crossover study. Setting Research laboratory. Patients or Other Participants A total of 15 male soccer players (age = 18.0 ± 1.4 years, height = 183.1 ± 6.0 cm, mass = 76.9 ± 7.8 kg) on the same team. Intervention(s) The FR and NDNG consisted of 6 set…

Interspecies differences in cancer susceptibility and toxicity.

1999

One of the most complex challenges to the toxicologist represents extrapolation from laboratory animals to humans. In this article, we review interspecies differences in metabolism and toxicity of heterocyclic amines, aflatoxin B1, 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD), and related compounds, endocrine disrupters, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, tamoxifen, and digitoxin. As far as possible, extrapolations to human toxicity and carcinogenicity are performed. Humans may be more susceptible to the carcinogenic effect of heterocyclic amines than monkeys, rats, and mice. Especially, individuals with high CYP1A2 and 3A4 activities and the rapid acetylator phenotype may be expected to have …

Metabolic Activation of the (+)-S,S- and (−)-R,R-Enantiomers of trans-11,12-Dihydroxy-11,12-dihydrodibenzo[a,l]pyrene:  Stereoselectivity, DNA Adduct…

1997

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons require metabolic activation in order to exert their biological activity initiated by DNA binding. The metabolic pathway leading to bay or fjord region dihydrodiol epoxides as ultimate mutagenic and/or carcinogenic metabolites is thought to play a dominant role. For dibenzo[a,l]pyrene, considered as the most potent carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, the formation of the fjord region syn- and/or anti-11,12-dihydrodiol 13,-14-epoxide (DB[a,l]PDE) diastereomers has been found to be the principal metabolic activation pathway in cell cultures leading to DNA adducts. In order to further elucidate the stereoselectivity involved in this activation pathway…
