The genetic identity of the only Italian population of the genus Macroprotodon Guichenot, 1850 on the island of Lampedusa, Sicily
2020
The only Italian population of false smooth snakes is found on Lampedusa, a small island located in the Sicilian Channel and part of the African continental shelf. The taxonomic identity of this population is currently uncertain, although it is most often attributed to Macroprotodon cucullatus textilis on a morphological basis. We present here the first genetic data on this population. The analysis carried out on the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene shows that the Lampedusan false smooth snake belongs to a clade shared with a single sample from central Tunisia. The genetic distance between this lineage and its sister group (M. abubakeri) is comparable to or higher than that found among many …

Identification of a Novel Pathway in BCR/ABL Signal Transduction Involving Akt-Independent Activation of PLC-gamma/mTOR/p70-S6K.
2006
Abstract In BCR/ABL positive CML, defining new, additional therapeutic targets in the pathways, activated by BCR/ABL is critical for the development of new treatment strategies, especially for patients resistant or refractory to Imatinib. While studying the involvement of PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathway in the development of such resistance we have uncovered the existence of additional, Akt-independent mechanism of activation of mTOR/p70-S6 Kinase pathway. Short term treatment with Imatinib (1μM, 4 hours) of the BCR/ABL-positive cell lines LAMA84, AR320, KCL22, K562, Ba/F3-BCR/ABL caused downregulation of p70-S6K phosphorylation and of S6 ribosomal protein phosphorylation without decreasing…
Neutrophil Recruitment Is Regulated By Adamts-13 in a Murine Model of Invasive Aspergillosis
2015
Abstract Introduction: During inflammation von Willebrand factor (VWF) multimers are secreted as an acute phase protein whereupon the size and the prothrombotic activity play an essential role. The size of VWF multimers is regulated by the specific proteolytic activity of ADAMTS-13 (a disintegrin and metalloprotease with ThromboSpondin type 1 repeats-13) which is diminished under several pathological conditions. Employing a murine model of invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA) we aimed to determine the relevance of this regulatory pathway for innate inflammatory responses and polymorphonuclear neutrophil (PMN) recruitment which is crucial for fungal clearance and survival. Methods: IPA was…
Metformin influences drug sensitivity in pancreatic cancer cells
2018
Abstract Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is an aggressive, highly metastatic malignancy and accounts for 85% of pancreatic cancers. PDAC patients have poor prognosis with a five-year survival of only 5–10% after diagnosis and treatment. Pancreatic cancer has been associated with type II diabetes as the frequency of recently diagnosed diabetics that develop pancreatic cancer within a 10-year period of initial diagnosis of diabetes in increased in comparison to non-diabetic patients. Metformin is a very frequently prescribed drug used to treat type II diabetes. Metformin acts in part by stimulating AMP-kinase (AMPK) and results in the suppression of mTORC1 activity and the induction o…
Human ABCB1 confers cells resistance to cytotoxic guanidine alkaloids from Pterogyne nitens.
2015
Multidrug resistance (MDR) caused by human ABCB1 (P-glycoprotein/MDR1) is one of the major obstacles in chemotherapy. To understand the mechanism of MDR by ABCB1 and circumvent the MDR, in the present study, we established human ABCB1-expressing cells (Flp-In-293/ABCB1 cells) and examined the cytotoxic effects of four guanidine alkaloids from Pterogyne nitens (galegine, nitensidine A, pterogynidine and pterogynine) using Flp-In-293/Mock and Flp-In-293/ABCB1 cells. The activity of ABCB1 in Flp-In-293/ABCB1 cells were confirmed by typical substrates for ABCB1 (taxol and vinblastine) in MTT assay. Flp-In-293/ABCB1 cells were also resistant to the four guanidine alkaloids as well as taxol and v…
Giant hepatocellular adenoma as cause of severe abdominal pain: a case report
2007
Abstract The authors describe the case of a large hepatocellular adenoma diagnosed in a 30-year old woman who came to us complaining of acute pain in the upper abdominal quadrants. The patient had been taking an oral contraceptive pill for the last ten years. We present the clinical features, the diagnostic work-up and the treatment prescribed.
On the variations of acoustic absorption peak with particle velocity in micro-perforated panels at high level of excitation.
2010
The acoustic behavior of micro-perforated panels (MPP) is studied theoretically and experimentally at high level of pressure excitation. A model based on Forcheimer's regime of flow velocity in the perforations is proposed. This model is valid at relatively high Reynolds numbers and low Mach numbers. The experimental method consists in measuring the acoustical pressure at three different positions in an impedance tube, the two measurement positions usually considered in an impedance tube and one measurement in the vicinity of the rear surface of the MPP. The impedance tube is equipped with a pressure driver instead of the usual loudspeaker and capable of delivering a high sound pressure lev…
