Hvilken rolle spiller musikken? : En undersøkelse i moderne kunstnerisk ledelse
2020

Master's thesis Music Management MU501 - University of Agder 2017 This thesis is an exploration of how the technological changes have affected adolescents’ use of music. The two extended hypotheses I will explore are: “Adolescents today are not willing to pay for music” and “Adolescents use music to regulate moods and develop their identity”. The reason for choosing these exact hypotheses is an assumption that the digitization of music has led to a decreased willingness to pay for access, while the more abstract use of music in mood regulation and identification is still the same. To explore my hypothesis I conducted two quantitative surveys among adolescents aged 12- 13. I present the resu…

Master's thesis Music Management MU501 - University of Agder 2018 Since the beginning of digitalisation, the music industries have struggled to develop systems for the accurate and fair collection and distribution of remuneration for the exploitation of rights. Systems are often found to be less than optimal, as a consequence of them being designed to work in an offline environment that is no longer present, making them outdated and dysfunctional. Ideally, such systems are developed naturally in tandem with disruption and change. This however, does not always happen, and it is in cases like these that lawmakers are forced to step in. Legislation does have a remarkable tendency of arriving l…

Perceptions in the Music Industry : How the Music Industry Perceives Itself in Regards to Fairness in the Distribution of Revenue in Music Streaming
2017
Master's thesis Music Management MU501 - University of Agder 2017 For as long as I have known of the existence of the music industry, I have heard two sides of its fairness towards artists. This was the case when I was a child and teenager, during the cassette- and CD-age, as well as my adult life, in the age of digital music and music streaming. I was curious not just to whether or not it was a fair business, but what the different perceptions of the industry was, especially today in the streaming age. My father once told me: "If there are two sides to a story, neither are true." The goal of this thesis is to find how the music industry perceives their current situation. I found it interes…
The relevance of traditional Collective Management Organisations in the digital age : Current challenges and future possibilities
2017
Master's thesis Music Management MU501 - University of Agder 2017 The relevance of the traditional collective management organizations has come to question in the digital age. Since the beginning of the internet the CMOs have faced an enormous change in their operations and critics have put them in the spotlight, for being unable to provide efficient services for their members. This called for the EU to regulate them by competition. This study seeks to profile the main challenges they are facing as well as the possibilities to stay relevant in a dynamic and competitive music industry. To do so, relevant theory and interviews with first class leading professionals from within the CMO system …
