Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is an idiopathic condition that manifests itself primarily with the onset of a burning sensation. The aim of this research was to perform photobiomodulation therapy (PBM) using a diode laser on the oral mucosa of BMS patients, followed by an objective evaluation of the morphological changes in the vascular bed underlying the mucosa using polarized light videocapillaroscopy. There is growing evidence that capsaicin-sensitive afferent neurones participate in the protective mechanisms of the gastric mucosa against damage. Animals pretreated systemically with capsaicin, at doses that lead to the ablation of capsaicin-sensitive afferent neurons, show an increase in the level of macro-scopically apparent mucosal damage in different experimental models of ulceration (Szolcsanyi and Bartho, 1981; Holzer and Sametz, 1986). Furthermore, acute stimulation with capsaicin of afferent nerve endings located in the gastric mucosa protects against different ulcerogenic mechanisms (Szolcsanyi and Bartho, 1981; Holzer and Lippe, 1988; Holzer et al., 1989).

Capillaroscopic and histologic examination of the human labial mucosa: A new non invasive methodology compared with the histological exam

The aim of our study is to compare the capillaroscopic examination in vivo with the histological examination in vitro of labial microcirculation in healthy subjects. Methods. Twenty-nine subjects (19 females, 10 males; mean±SD age 55.61±2.55; range 45-65 years) were examined in our laboratory. The characteristics of labial microcirculation were examined using computerised videomicroscopic techniques and histological exam. Results. The results obtained with both methods showed some analogies: in fact, the differences in capillary diameter were in the range of ±0.3 µ; regarding capillary density as well, a variation of ±2 capillaries per mm2 was found. Absorption and intestinal catabolism of fatty acids in the rat: effect of chain length and unsaturation

Simultaneous portal blood absorption and intestinal mucosal catabolism of labelled fatty acids were investigated. Anaesthetized adult Wistar rats were infused intraduodenally either with 90 mumol of capric (C10:0), oleic (C18:1), linoleic (C18:2) or arachidonic (C20:4) 1-14C acids or with 30 mumol of each labelled fatty acid in addition to 30 mumol of oleic acid and 30 mumol of monopalmitin. Ischemia and post-ischemic regeneration of the small intestinal mucosa

After ligation of the vascular arcades of the upper jejunum in rats, the ischemic damage to the intestinal mucosa and its regenerative behavior after ischemia lasting 120 minutes were investigated with histological and enzyme-histochemical methods. During the ischemic injury of the jejunal mucosa, there is rejection of hydropically swollen epithelial cells into the intestinal lumen advancing from the tip to the base of the villi without a previously detectable loss of activity of the enzymes investigated.
