Acute Multilocular Osteomyelitis in Infancy and Childhood

1991

38 cases of acute multilocular osteomyelitis out of a total of 165 osteomyelitis patients were treated between 1974 and 1986 at the Department of Paediatric Surgery and Paediatric Diseases at the University of Mainz. Osteomyelitis in infants was separated from juvenile osteomyelitis because of the different problems inherent to this disease depending upon the age; likewise, multilocular remote involvement was separated from regional multiple involvement. It was found that distant involvement is of special importance in infancy. 6 of the 8 cases in this group presented with symmetrical involvement. This interesting phenomenon is described in this article for the first time in acute multilocu…

Visual and Refractive Outcomes in Hyperopic Pseudophakic Patients Implanted with the Acri.LISA 366D Multifocal Intraocular Lens

2009

Our purpose was to assess the visual quality after bilateral implantation of the Acri.LISA 366D intraocular lens (IOL; Carl Zeiss Meditec, Jena, Germany) in patients with hyperopia. We did a prospective and nonrandomized study. One hundred and seventy eyes of 85 patients had bilateral implantation of the Acri.LISA 366D IOL. The patients were divided into 2 groups: low to moderate hyperopia (IOL power, 21 to 24.5 diopters [D]) and high hyperopia (IOL power, 25 to 36 D). Monocular and binocular best spectacle-corrected visual acuity (BSCVA), best distance-corrected near visual acuity (BCNVA), binocular best distance-corrected intermediate visual acuity (VA), and distance contrast sensitivity …

Visual function comparison of 2 aspheric multifocal intraocular lenses

2011

To compare visual function after bilateral implantation of the multifocal Lentis Mplus LS-312 with a nonrotational symmetrical design (copolymer aspheric) or the Acrysof Restor SN6AD1 +3.0 D (hybrid aspheric) intraocular lens (IOL).Fernández-Vega Ophthalmological Institute, Oviedo, Spain.Comparative case series.Six months postoperatively, corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), distance-corrected near visual acuity (DCNVA), the defocus curve, and photopic and mesopic contrast sensitivity with and without glare were measured. The mean CDVA was 0.02 ± 0.06 (SD) with the copolymer aspheric IOL and -0.06 ± 0.05 logMAR with the hybrid aspheric IOL (P=.07) and the mean DCNVA, 0.10 ± 0.06 and -0.0…

Bilateral implantation of the Acri.LISA bifocal intraocular lens in myopic eyes.

2009

Purpose To asses visual quality after bilateral implantation of the Acri.LISA 366D intraocular lens (IOL) (Carl Zeiss Meditec) in patients with high and low–moderate myopia. Methods A total of 304 eyes of 152 patients had bilateral implantation of the Acri.LISA 366D IOL. The patients were divided into 2 groups: low–moderate myopia (IOL power from 15 to 20.5 D) and high myopia (IOL power from 0 to 14.5 D). Monocular and binocular best-corrected distance visual acuity (BCVA) and best distance-corrected near visual acuity (BCNVA), binocular best distance-corrected intermediate visual acuity (BCIVA), and distance contrast sensitivity (OS) under photopic (85 cd/m2) and mesopic (5 cd/m2) conditio…

Stereoacuity with simultaneous vision multifocal contact lenses.

2010

Our purpose was to evaluate near stereoacuity (SA) with Focus Progressives and PureVision Multifocal simultaneous vision contact lenses. In a cross-over study design, 20 presbyopic subjects were fitted with either the Focus Progressives or PureVision Multifocal lenses. After 1 month, SA was measured with the vectographic Titmus, Random dot stereotests, and the Howard-Dolman apparatus under photopic conditions (85 lux) at 40 cm. Binocular high-contrast visual acuity at distance and near was examined. Subjects were then refitted with the alternative correction and the procedure was repeated. Mean SA with the Focus Progressive was 21 +/- 7 sec arc, 54 +/- 17 sec arc, and 51 +/- 21 sec arc, wit…

Visual and optical performance with the ReZoom multifocal intraocular lens

2011

Purpose This study evaluated visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, and wavefront aberrations after refractive multifocal intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. Methods A prospective study comprising 174 eyes of 87 patients who had bilateral implantation of a multifocal IOL was carried out. A control group of 100 eyes of 50 age-matched patients with a monofocal IOL was used for comparison. Uncorrected and corrected distance and near visual acuity, contrast sensitivity (CS), and wavefront analysis (Hartmann-Shack) was performed 6 months after surgery. Contrast sensitivity was tested for distance and near under mesopic (2 cd/m2) and photopic conditions (90 cd/m2). Results Distance photopic CS was…

Restless legs syndrome in a patient with multifocal motor neuropathy

2009

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) has been frequently reported in association with peripheral neuropathy, and it is especially frequent in some forms of polyneuropathy with preferential involvement of small sensory fibers. Here, we describe a patient with multifocal motor neuropathy, who developed RLS during the course of the disease. Our findings support the notion that RLS may develop in the context of immune-mediated neuropathies and it should be specifically investigated even in those patients with preferentially or exclusive motor involvement.

FACTORS AFFECTING THE DIAGNOSTIC DELAY IN AMYOTROPHIC LATERAL SCLEROSIS

2012

Abstract Background Although amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a relentlessly progressive disorder, early diagnosis allows a prompt start with the specific drug riluzole and an accurate palliative care planning. ALS at onset may however mimic several disorders, some of them treatable ( e.g. , multifocal motor neuropathy) or epidemiologically more frequent ( e.g. , cervical myelopathy). Objective To study the delay from onset to diagnosis in a cohort of ALS patients and to the variables that may affect it. Methods We performed a retrospective analysis of the diagnostic delays in a cohort of 260 patients affected by ALS (M/F = 1.32) followed at our tertiary referral ALS Center between 20…

Impact of lens material on objective refraction in eyes with trifocal diffractive intraocular lenses

2021

Purpose: Compare subjective (Rx) and objective (ObjRx) refractions outcomes with two autorefractors models and an aberrometer in eyes implanted with a hydrophobic trifocal IOL (FineVision POD F GF, Physiol, Liége, Belgium) and a hydrophilic one (FineVision POD F, Physiol, Liége, Belgium). Methods: Prospective comparative cohort study, with 100 subjects randomly assigned to either the POD F group (n = 50) or the POD F-GF group (n = 50). Postoperative eye examinations at 1-month visit included seven result sets, one for each assessment method: Rx, AR (automated refraction measured with the autorefractor KR8800), WF-P (Zernike-coefficients-based objective refraction, photopic pupil size), WF-M…
