El objetivo principal de esta tesis consiste en analizar la presencia de María Magdalena en las producciones audiovisuales del periodo comprendido entre 1897 y 2014. Dichas producciones proceden de Europa, Estados Unidos, Canadá y México. El marco metodológico general a partir del que se plantea el análisis es la iconología, entendida como Zwichenraum o tierra de confluencias. En concreto, la noción de continuidad y variación, iniciada por Aby Warburg y continuada por Fritz Saxl, es la principal cuestión teórica en la que se basa la aproximación. “Doktor Faustus” of Thomas Mann, as explained by its author, is a novel on German civilization in which music plays the role of paradigm. Nevertheless the author grasps a lot of quotations from different disciplines and topics, ― e.g., theology, policy, philosophy, music, chemistry ― with the aim of depicting the creation of a second nature in music according the rules of twelve-note composition established by Arnold Schoenberg. Music in the moment? Revisiting the effect of large scale structures.

The psychological relevance of large-scale musical structures has been a matter of debate in the music community. This issue was investigated with a method that allows assessing listeners' detection of musical incoherencies in normal and scrambled versions of popular and contemporary music pieces. Musical excerpts were segmented into 28 or 29 chunks. In the scrambled version, the temporal order of these chunks was altered with the constraint that the transitions between two chunks never created local acoustical and musical disruptions. Cross-cultural music cognition: cognitive methodology applied to North Sami yoiks

This article is a study of melodic expectancy in North Sami yoiks, a style of music quite distinct from Western tonal music. Three different approaches were taken. The first approach was a statistical style analysis of tones in a representative corpus of 18 yoiks. The analysis determined the relative frequencies of tone onsets and two- and three-tone transitions. It also identified style characteristics, such as pentatonic orientation, the presence of two reference pitches, the frequency of large consonant intervals, and a relatively large set of possible melodic continuations. Evidence for a spatial bias in the perception of sequences of brief tones

Listeners are unable to report the physical order of particular sequences of brief tones. This phenomenon of temporal dislocation depends on tone durations and frequencies. The current study empirically shows that it also depends on the spatial location of the tones. Dichotically testing a three-tone sequence showed that the central tone tends to be reported as the first or the last element when it is perceived as part of a left-to-right motion. Since the central-tone dislocation does not occur for right-to-left sequences of the same tones, this indicates that there is a spatial bias in the perception of sequences. © 2013 Acoustical Society of America.

Measuring and modeling real-time responses to music: the dynamics of tonality induction.

We examined a variety of real-time responses evoked by a single piece of music, the organ Duetto BWV 805 by J S Bach. The primary data came from a concurrent probe-tone method in which the probe-tone is sounded continuously with the music. Listeners judged how well the probe tone fit with the music at each point in time. The process was repeated for all probe tones of the chromatic scale. A self-organizing map (SOM) [Kohonen 1997 Self-organizing Maps (Berlin: Springer)] was used to represent the developing and changing sense of key reflected in these judgments. Distinct effects of positive and negative music on older adults' auditory target identification performances.

Older adults, compared to younger adults, are more likely to attend to pleasant situations and avoid unpleasant ones. Yet, it is unclear whether such a phenomenon may be generalized to musical emotions. In this study, we investigated whether there is an age-related difference in how musical emotions are experienced and how positive and negative music influences attention performances in a target identification task. Thirty-one young and twenty-eight older adults were presented with 40 musical excerpts conveying happiness, peacefulness, sadness, and threat.
