Racialized immigrants becoming part of the city : connecting migration, space and race : commentary to van Liempt
2023
Building on Ilse van Liempt’s (2023) lecture, this commentary addresses the connection and shift between forced displacement and local emplacement by addressing what becoming part of the city means for racialized immigrants. By bringing forward the notion of racialization I hope to contribute to a growing body of literature discussing how malleable and productive the concept of race – albeit erased and relegated to the past – keeps on shaping conversations about and across Europe. Connecting migration, space and race offers a particularly rich context in which to have this discussion because, as all three elements are mutually constructive, addressing them together exposes some of the compl…
Suomessa asuvien yläkouluikäisten maahanmuuttajanuorten seksuaaliterveystiedot
2011
Opinnäytetyön tarkoituksena on selvittää millainen seksuaaliterveystietämys yläkouluikäisillä maahanmuuttajanuorilla on. Tutkimukseen osallistui viisi yläkoulua eri puolilta Suo…
Multi-professional work practices in the field of immigrant integration – examples of collaboration between the police and social work
2017
Development of the professional competences and work practices are required when promoting successful immigrant integration in a constantly diversifying society. One work method applied in this field is multi-professional collaboration. Cooperation between the authorities at the local level reduces the overlap between services and brings together expertise and resources, resulting in not only added value but also more proactive and less costly service. Thus, collaboration can involve actors from various sectors, like NGOs or ethnic minority communities. In this article examples of collaboration in two different multi-ethnic contexts are introduced: first, in school and second, in a suburb.…

Maahanmuuttajat suomalaisilla työmarkkinoilla : intersektionaalisuus ja "hyvä kansalainen" työmarkkina-aseman määrittäjänä
2015
Eri asemistaan huolimatta haastateltavilla esiintyy vahvaa työn tekemisen korostamista. Tarkastelemme heidän asemoitumistaan yhtäältä Brid…
Regional Case Study. From Ukraine to Finland and Estonia via Poland : Migration and posting of third country nationals. Work package 4
2020
This report gives an overview of the Con3Post project1 research that analyses a new and understudied phenomenon of posting third country nationals (TCNs) in the European construction sector, with a special focus on the posting flow involving workers from Ukraine being posted to Finland and Estonia through Poland. The research highlights severe regulatory challenges related to the phenomenon. These include posted TCNs being exposed to multiple vulnerabilities that are even more extreme than intra-European Union (EU) posted workers are usually exposed to. These are: lack of occupational safety and health training and having no accident insurance coverage, not receiving wages and other employm…
Recognising forced migrants in transnational social work
2018
PurposeNation states’ neoliberal policies do not regard asylum seekers and undocumented migrants as deserving of a good life. Social work in welfare states is highly connected to the policies of nation states. There is a need to address theories in social work that have a transnational focus at the local level. Axel Honneth’s recognition theory enables an approach to forced migration from the direction of personal relations and personhood itself. The core idea is that if people cannot gain recognition, this causes harm to their self-realisation. The purpose of this paper is discuss how the recognition theory overcomes a national focus in social work.Design/methodology/approachThis paper is …
“Practicing care in qualitative organizational research: moral responsibility and legitimacy in a study of immigration management”
2021
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to provide insight into the reciprocal relations between the caregiving imparted by immigration centre managers and the role of the researcher in responding to the care that is given by managerial caregivers. To enable this, we draw on a feminist theory of care ethics that considers individuals as relationally interdependent.Design/methodology/approachThe analysis draws on a semi-structured interview study involving 20 Finnish immigration reception centre managers.FindingsInsight is generated by reflecting on moments of care that arise between research participants and the researcher in a study of immigration centre management. We emphasise the importance…
