NUCB2 is an EF-hand Ca2+ binding protein that has been implicated in various physiological processes like calcium homeostasis, hypothalamic regulation of feeding and TNF receptor shedding. Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are c-KIT-signaling-driven mesenchymal tumors of the human digestive tract, many of which have c-KIT or PDGFRα activating mutations. The authors studied the immunohistochemical markers, c-KIT and PDGFRα mutations, in GISTs and their association with the clinicopathological and clinical follow-up in 145 GISTs. Tumors were located mainly in the stomach, the median tumor size being 7.5 cm. The mitotic index was ≤5 mitoses per 50 high-power fields in 61% of cases, 96% expressed CD117, and c-KIT or PDGFRα mutations were detected in 68% of cases. Summary Objectives: This study aims to characterize EEG complexity, measured as the prediction error resulting from nonlinear prediction, in healthy humans during photic stimulation. Methods: EEGs were recorded from 15 subjects with eyes closed (EC) and eyes open (EO), during the baseline condition and during stroboscopic photic stimulation (PS) at 5, 10, and 15 Hz. Gastric outlet obstruction in a neonate because of Peutz-Jeghers syndrome

Neonatal detection of Peutz-Jeghers syndrome is unusual with only 2 cases previously reported in the literature. We describe a neonate presenting with gastric outlet obstruction owing to 2 large Peutz-Jeghers polyps. The child's father and grandmother were known to have Peutz-Jeghers syndrome. On the ninth day of life, the infant underwent colonoscopy, abdominal exploration, and complete surgical resection of 3 polyps. The postoperative course was uneventful, and the patient was discharged home at the age of 3 weeks on full oral feeds. This is the first case report of inherited Peutz-Jeghers syndrome causing gastric outlet obstruction in a neonate.

Diagnosing fatigue in gait patterns by support vector machines and self-organizing maps

The aim of the study was to train and test support vector machines (SVM) and self-organizing maps (SOM) to correctly classify gait patterns before, during and after complete leg exhaustion by isokinetic leg exercises. Ground reaction forces were derived for 18 gait cycles on 9 adult participants. Immediately before the trials 7-12, participants were required to completely exhaust their calves with the aid of additional weights (44.4±8.8kg). Data were analyzed using: (a) the time courses directly and (b) only the deviations from each individual's calculated average gait pattern.
