Polyfunctional Tetraaza-Macrocyclic Ligands: Zn(II), Cu(II) Binding and Formation of Hybrid Materials with Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes

2017

The binding properties of HL1, HL2, and HL3 ligands toward Cu(II) and Zn(II) ions, constituted by tetraaza-macrocyclic rings decorated with pyrimidine pendants, were investigated by means of potentiometric and UV spectrophotometric measurements in aqueous solution, with the objective of using the related HL-M(II) (HL = HL1–HL3; M = Cu, Zn) complexes for the preparation of hybrid MWCNT-HL-M(II) materials based on multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), through an environmentally friendly noncovalent procedure. As shown by the crystal structure of [Cu(HL1)](ClO4)2, metal coordination takes place in the macrocyclic ring, whereas the pyrimidine residue remains available for attachment onto the s…

Mixed aggregates based on tetronic-fluorinated surfactants for selective oils capture

2015

Abstract An aqueous star-like copolymer solution was titrated with perfluoro carboxylic acids at various compositions to prepare a polymeric surfactant composed of fluorinated nano-domains. The copolymer is X-shaped where each arm contains ethylene oxide and propylene oxide repetitive units linked to a central ethylenediamine group. The aggregation behavior of the hybrid macromolecule was studied from the physico-chemical point of view by changing parameters like temperature and composition. The solubilization of perfluorinated and hydrogenated alcohols in mixed self-assembled structure revealed that a selectivity toward the fluorinated moiety can be done. The self-assembled structures are …

N-Alkyl Ammonium Resorcinarene Chloride Receptors for Guest Binding in Aqueous Environment

2016

Host systems with guest binding ability in water and/or biological fluids are a current challenge in supramolecular host–guest chemistry. Here we present the first syntheses of water-soluble N-ethanol ammonium resorcinarene chlorides (NARCls) with terminal hydroxyl groups at the upper rim. The NARCls possess deep cavities and are shown to bind a variety of guest molecules such as linear and cyclic alkanes, linear halogenated alkanes, and aromatic fluorophores (naphthalene, p-(phenylazo)phenol) in water through hydrophobic interactions, as well as 1,4-dioxane (a water soluble guest) via hydrogen bonds. The receptors are monomeric in aqueous media and form 1:1 host–guest complexes with bindin…

Towards the Preservation and Dissemination of Historical Silk Weaving Techniques in the Digital Era

2019

Historical weaving techniques have evolved in time and space giving as result more or less fabrics with different aesthetical characteristics. These techniques were transferred along the main silk production centers, thanks to the European Silk Road and creating a common European Frame on themes and techniques. These had made it complicated to determine whether a fabric corresponds to one century or another. Moreover, in order to understand their creation, it is necessary to determine the number of weaves and interlacements that each textile has, therefore, mathematical models can be extracted from these layers. In this sense, three dimensional (3D) virtual representations of the internal s…

Last Millennium hydro-climate variability in Central–Eastern Europe (Northern Carpathians, Romania)

2015

Proxy-based reconstructions of climate variability over the last millennium provide important insights for understanding current climate change within a long-term context. Past hydrological changes are particularly difficult to reconstruct, yet rainfall patterns and variability are among the most critical environmental variables. Ombrotrophic bogs, entirely dependent on water from precipitation and sensitive to changes in the balance between precipitation and evapotranspiration, are highly suitable for such hydro-climate reconstructions. We present a multi-proxy analysis (testate amoebae, plant macrofossils, stable carbon isotopes in Sphagnum, pollen, spores and macroscopic charcoal) from …

IS THE MACROSCOPIC CLASSIFICATION OF FLINT USEFUL? A PETROARCHAEOLOGICAL ANALYSIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF FLINT RAW MATERIALS FROM THE IBERIAN NEOLIT…

2009

Casa Montero is a mining complex located outside Madrid (Spain), dated from the Early Neolithic (c. 5400-5000 cal bc). An area of some 4 ha has been investigated and some 4000 shafts recorded, of which 324 have been excavated. The characterization of its raw flint materials and the establishment of its diagnostic features are indispensable in the reconstruction of the distribution of the mine's products beyond the immediate site. This work reports the geological study of the mine's Miocene flint layers and their petrological characterization. Archaeological samples from the mine's shafts were classified according to macroscopic features and petrological characteristics.

Using mechanical experiments to study ground stone tool use: Exploring the formation of percussive and grinding wear traces on limestone tools

2021

Ground Stone Tools (GST) have been identified in several Levantine archaeological sites dating to the Middle Paleolithic. These tools, frequently made of limestone, are often interpreted based on their morphology and damage as having been used for knapping flint, and sometimes for breaking animal bones or processing vegetal materials as well. However, the lack of experimental referential collections on limestone is a major obstacle for the identification of diagnostic traces on these types of tools and raw material. In this sense, the understanding of the specific function of these GST and the association between tool types and activity often remains unknown or merely speculative. Recent di…

On the impact of safety requirements, energy prices and investment costs in street lighting refurbishment design

2018

Abstract Street lighting is an indispensable feature for the night landscape of cities. It is important for road safety, users visual comfort, crime prevention and to augment the perceived personal safety. Realize and maintain an adequate street lighting service is very expensive for municipalities with significant impact on their budgets. For this reason, special attention should be paid to the design of new street lighting systems and to the refurbishment of existing ones, since many of them are inadequate. In light of this it is very important to implement street lighting designs that fulfil lighting requirements avoiding energy waste and light pollution and, at the same time, result eco…
