Purpose To develop deep learning (DL) systems estimating visual function from macula-centered spectral-domain (SD) OCT images. Design Evaluation of a diagnostic technology. Participants A total of 2408 10-2 visual field (VF) SD OCT pairs and 2999 24-2 VF SD OCT pairs collected from 645 healthy and glaucoma subjects (1222 eyes). Methods The Gutenberg Health Study is a population-based study in Germany, including an ophthalmological examination with refraction, biometry and optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging. The aim of the study is to evaluate the progression of visual field (VF) defects over 16 years of observation and to assess abnormalities in vessels and retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) thickness in patients with optic disc drusen (ODD). Purpose To compare thicknesses of intraretinal layers segmented by spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) between autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and neurotypical (NT) individuals. Methods We performed 2 scans on 108 eyes from 54 participants (27 high-functioning ASD and 27 age- and sex-matched NT subjects): macular fast volume and peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL). A co-registration investigation of inter-word spacing and parafoveal preview: Eye movements and fixation-related potentials

Participants’ eye movements (EMs) and EEG signal were simultaneously recorded to examine foveal and parafoveal processing during sentence reading. All the words in the sentence were manipulated for inter-word spacing (intact spaces vs. spaces replaced by a random letter) and parafoveal preview (identical preview vs. random letter string preview). We observed disruption for unspaced text and invalid preview conditions in both EMs and fixation-related potentials (FRPs). Dexamethasone for unresponsive diabetic macular oedema: optical coherence tomography biomarkers

Purpose: To analyse the effects of intravitreal dexamethasone implant (DEX) in patients with diabetic macular oedema (DME) unresponsive to ranibizumab treatment, in relation to the inflammatory optical coherence tomography (OCT) retinal features, subfoveal neuroretinal detachment (SND) and hyperreflective retinal spots (HRS). Methods: Patients with DME poorly responsive to three injections of ranibizumab were treated with DEX. Retinal nerve fibre layer and brain grey substance as early prognostic factors for disability in multiple sclerosis.

We read with interest the article by Bock et al ,1 in which the association between retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) and total macular volume (TMV) was analysed by optical coherence tomography (OCT) and contrast sensitivity was measured by functional acuity contrast testing in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. The authors found that the functional contrast vision in MS is influenced by morphological changes in the anterior visual pathway. This work emphasised that contrast sensitivity is reduced in MS, and that RNFL and TMV, as morphological measures of retinal axon loss, are predictors of contrast sensitivity.
