Dispersion of magnetic susceptibility in a suspension of flexible ferromagnetic rods

Abstract The properties of suspensions of magnetosomes extracted from magnetotactic bacteria are investigated. By using dynamic light scattering and measuring the dispersion of magnetic susceptibility it is shown that sonicated samples with broken magnetosome chains have qualitatively different behavior in comparison with native samples. This is explained by the presence of flexible chains of magnetosomes in non-sonicated samples which have the qualitative features of magnetic susceptibility predicted by the model of flexible magnetic rods.

Synthesis of a Hydrothermally Stable, Periodic Mesoporous Material Containing Magnetite Nanoparticles, and the Preparation of Oriented Films

Magnetite nanoparticles modified covalently with triethoxysilane having a quaternary dicetyl ammonium ion are used together with tetraethylorthosilicate as building blocks to prepare a mesoporous material. Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide is used as a structure-directing agent under conditions typically used for mesoporous MCM-41 silicas. The resulting mesoporous material (MAG-MCM-41), containing up to 15 wt % of magnetite is characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), isothermal gas adsorption, and X-ray diffraction. A molecular chemical approach to the magnetic multilayers

Abstract Using the bi-dimensional bimetallic networks based upon oxalate complexes, it is possible to prepare new multilayered materials by insertion of ‘electroactive’ molecules in between these layers. According to this approach a new family of compounds presenting alternating ferromagnetic—paramagnetic layers have been successfully prepared. Dielectric properties of (KBr)1-x (KCN)x

The temperature dependence of the dielectric constant of (KBr)1−x (KCN) x was measured at frequencies of 87.5 Hz, 1, 10 and 100 kHz for concentrations ofx=0, 0.01, 0.04, 0.14, 0.25, and 0.50. Both the real and the imaginary part showed maxima at characteristic temperatures which depend on the measuring frequency and the concentration. The results are analogous to the behaviour of the magnetic susceptibility in spin glasses and support the existence of an orientational glass state.

In this work, we present the synthetic pathway, a refined structural description, complete solid-state characterization and the magnetic properties of four new cobalt(II) compounds of formulas [Co(H2O)6][Co2(H2mpba)3]·2H2O·0.5dmso (1), [Co(H2O)6][Co2(H2mpba)3]·3H2O·0.5dpss (2), [Co2(H2mpba)2(H2O)4]n·4nH2O (3), and [Co2(H2mpba)2(CH3OH)2(H2O)2]n·0.5nH2O·2ndpss (4) [dpss = 2,2′-dipyridyldisulfide and H4mpba = 1,3-phenylenebis(oxamic) acid], where 2 and 4 were obtained from [Co(dpss)Cl2] (Pre-I) as the source of cobalt(II). Wavelength selective light-induced magnetic effects in the binuclear spin crossover compound{[Fe(bt)(NCS)2]2(bpym)}

Using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, and magnetic susceptibility measurements under light irradiation, the selective light-induced excited spin state trapping (LIESST) and the reversible-LIESST effect have been evidenced and studied in depth in the binuclear spin crossover compound {[Fe(bt)(NCS)2]2bpym}. In this system, each magnetic site can switch from low spin (LS) to high spin (HS), so that three states exist, namely, the LS-LS, HS-LS, and HS-HS. Crystal growth of Hg1−xMnxSe for infrared detection

In this work, we report on the successfully growing Hg"1"-"xMn"xSe bulk crystals using a mixed, travelling heater method and Bridgman method, two-step procedure. Firstly, and with the aim of reducing Hg high pressure related to the high temperature synthesis reaction between the components in elemental form, HgSe crystals were synthesized and grown by the cold travelling heater method. Secondly, previously sublimated Mn and Se were incorporated to complete the desired composition. Then, the Bridgman growth was carried out by heating the alloy at a temperature of about 880^oC and lowering it at rate of 1mm/h through a gradient of 25^oC/cm. Magnetic excitations in an exchange-coupled tetramer cluster of cobalt (II): a study by inelastic neutron scattering

Abstract The polyoxometalate K 10 [Co 4 (H 2 O) 2 (PW 9 O 34 ) 2 ].20H 2 O contains a ferromagnetically exchange-coupled tetramer of Co 11 encapsulated in between two diamagnetic molecules (PW 9 O 34 -9 . At 2.5K several inelastic peaks are observed in the energy range 1.5–7 meV, which are assigned to magnetic excitations in the cluster. A tentative interpretation of these data from an anisotropic exchange model yields a cobalt-cobalt interaction of 3meV (24cm -1 ) and an amount of anisotropy J xy / J z ≌0.6. These values are consistent with the magnetic susceptibility measurements.

Magneto-structural diversity of Co(ii) compounds with 1-benzylimidazole induced by linear pseudohalide coligands

We report the preparation, spectroscopic characterisation, crystal structure determination and cryomagnetic investigation of three cobalt(II) complexes of formula trans-[Co(bim)4(NCS)2] (1), [Co(bim)2(NCO)2] (2) and [Co(bim)2(N3)2]n (3) (bim = 1-benzylimidazole). The structure of 1 is made up of neutral [Co(bim)4(NCS)2] mononuclear units, where the cobalt(II) ion is six-coordinate with four monodentate bim ligands in equatorial positions and two N-thiocyanato groups in the axial sites building a slightly compressed octahedron.
