Circular dichroism in atomic vapors: magnetically induced transitions responsible for two distinct behaviors
2021
Atomic transitions of alkali metals for which the condition $F_e-F_g = \pm2$ is satisfied have null probability in a zero magnetic field, while a giant increase can occur when an external field is applied. Such transitions, often referred to as magnetically-induced (MI) transitions, have received interest because their high probabilities in wide ranges of external magnetic fields which, in some cases, are even higher than that of usual atomic transitions. Previously, the following rule was established: the intensities of MI transitions with $\Delta F=\pm2$ are maximum when using respectively $\sigma^\pm$ radiation. Within the same ground state, the difference in intensity for $\sigma^+$ and…
Circular dichroism in x-ray photoemission from core levels of nonmagnetic species
1992
Circular dichroism in the angular distribution of photoelectrons (CDAD) has been observed in core-level photoemission from spherically symmetric initial states of nonmagnetic species utilizing circularly polarized soft-x-ray radiation from BESSY. Up to now, CDAD was predicted and observed only for aligned initial states. The data for oriented CO molecules prove that circular x-ray dichroism in photoemission from core levels is a general phenomenon that is not restricted to ferromagnets. High asymmetries of 50% suggest future applications as an effective circular x-ray analyzer.
Energy- and angle-dependent threshold photoemission magnetic circular dichroism from an ultrathin Co/Pt(111) film
2010
Threshold photoemission magnetic circular dichroism (TPMCD) in one-photon photoemission (1PPE) and two-photon photoemission (2PPE) is measured at an ultrathin Co film grown on Pt(111). Energy-dependent measurements reveal maximum asymmetries directly at the photoemission threshold (1.90% for 1PPE and 11.7% for 2PPE) which weakly decrease with increasing photon energy. The measured TPMCD asymmetries are discussed in two excitation models on the basis of spin-resolved band-structure calculations. For the model of direct band-to-band transitions in other k directions than the direction of observation (Gamma-L) ab initio calculations for 1PPE and 2PPE are performed. The theory is in reasonable …
Beyond the Heisenberg Model: Anisotropic Exchange Interaction between a Cu-Tetraazaporphyrin Monolayer andFe3O4(100)
2013
The exchange coupling of a single spin localized at the central ion of Cu-tetraazaporphyrin on a magnetite(100) surface has been studied using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). Sum rule analysis of the XMCD spectra results in Cu spin and orbital magnetic moments as a function of the applied external field at low temperatures (20 K). The exchange coupling is positive for magnetization direction perpendicular to the surface (ferromagnetic) while it is negative for in-plane magnetization direction (antiferromagnetic). We attribute the anisotropy of the Heisenberg exchange coupling to an orbitally dependent exchange Hamiltonian.

ZnO doped with a few per cent (<10%) of magnetic ions such as Co exhibit room temperature (RT) ferromagnetism, transforming it into a very promising candidate for future spin electronic applications. We present x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) spectroscopy, which has been used in total electron yield, total fluorescence yield, and reflection mode to investigate the origin of ferromagnetism in such diluted magnetic semiconductor materials in a surface, bulk and interface sensitive way, respectively. We investigated three different types of samples: ZnO doped with 5% Co, artificially layered films, and layered films with additional co-doping of 10% Li. These films are prepared by puls…
Element-specific magnetic properties of mixed 3d−4f metallacrowns
2018
Single molecule magnets comprising rare earth metals are of high interest due to the unquenched orbital moments of the rare earth ions that result in a large energy barrier for magnetization reversal. We investigate the magnetic properties of polynuclear $3d\text{\ensuremath{-}}4f15$-MC-5 metallacrowns using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism of powder samples at a temperature of 7 K in a magnetic field of 7 T. The sum rule analysis reveals element-specific spin and orbital moments. The magnetic moments of the $3d$ transition metal Ni(II) ions are coupled antiferromagnetically to each other and contribute only little to the total molecular moment. The spin and orbital moments of the rare ear…
Energy- and k -resolved mapping of the magnetic circular dichroism in threshold photoemission from Co films on Pt(111)
2017
The magnetic circular dichroism in threshold photoemission (TPMCD) for perpendicularly magnetized fcc Co films on Pt(111) has been revisited. A complete mapping of the spectral function $I({E}_{B},{k}_{x},{k}_{y})$ (binding energy ${E}_{B}$, momentum parallel to surface ${k}_{x}$, ${k}_{y}$) and the corresponding TPMCD asymmetry distribution ${A}_{\mathrm{MCD}}({E}_{B},{k}_{x},{k}_{y})$ has been performed for one-photon and two-photon photoemission using time-of-flight momentum microscopy. The experimental results allow distinguishing direct from indirect transitions. The measurements reveal clear band features of direct transitions from bulk bands that show a nontrivial asymmetry pattern. …
Dominance of the first excitation step for magnetic circular dichroism in near-threshold two-photon photoemission
2012
Magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) in near-threshold photoemission is measured for a perpendicularly magnetized Cs/Co/Pt(111) film with work function adjusted by Cs adsorption. For one-photon photoe ...
Magnetization dynamics in microscopic spin-valve elements: Shortcomings of the macrospin picture
2007
We have studied ultrafast magnetodynamics in micropatterned spin-valve structures using time-resolved x-ray photoemission electron microscopy combined with x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. Exciting the system with ultrafast field pulses of $250\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{ps}$ width, we find the dynamic response of the free layer to fall into two distinctly different contributions. On the one hand, it exhibits localized spin wave modes that strongly depend on the shape of the micropattern. A field pulse applied perpendicular to the exchange bias field along the diagonal of a square pattern leads to the excitation of a standing spin wave mode with two nodes along the field direction.…
Angular and temperature dependence of the magnetic circular dichroism in4dcore-level photoemission from Gd(0001)
2002
We present experimental and theoretical results for the angular and temperature dependence of magnetic circular dichroism in Gd $4d$ core-level photoelectron emission from a Gd(0001) surface in both normal and off-normal directions and with azimuthal variation. Two theoretical approaches are used to model this data: a single electron theory with full multiple scattering of the outgoing photoelectron and a full-relativistic many-electron theory with single scattering only. Thermal effects due to atomic vibrations and the excitation of initial-state multiplets are also included. For normal emission, we find smooth free-atom-like angular variations in emission intensity, while for off-normal e…
