Magnetic Langmuir-Blodgett films of ferritin with different iron contents.

2006

Magnetic Langmuir-Blodgett films of four ferritin derivatives with different iron contents containing 4220, 3062, 2200, and 1200 iron atoms, respectively, have been prepared by using the adsorption properties of a 6/1 mixed monolayer of methyl stearate (SME) and dioctadecyldimethylammonium bromide (DODA). The molecular organization of the mixed SME/DODA monolayer is strongly affected by the presence of the water-soluble protein in the subphase as shown by pi-A isotherms, BAM images, and imaging ellipsometry at the water-air interface. BAM images reveal the heterogeneity of this mixed monolayer at the air-water interface. We propose that the ferritin is located under the mixed matrix in thos…

Detection of lung cancer bio-markers in human breath using a micro-fabricated air analyzer

2015

International audience; The analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are linked to lung cancer is a very promising way in medical diagnostics because it is non-invasive and potentially inexpensive. In that sense, a silicon micro-analytical platform consisting of a three-dimensional micro-preconcentrator coupled to a silicon spiral gas chromatographic micro-column was built. A metal oxide-based gas sensor acted as a miniaturized gas detector. This system allowed selective detection of VOCs at the sub-ppm level. The present study is focused first on the chromatographic air analyzer fabrication and second on the selection of an appropriate adsorbent. Various adsorbents such as activa…

Gamma-induced background in the KATRIN main spectrometer

2019

The KATRIN experiment aims to measure the effective electron antineutrino mass $$m_{\overline{\nu }_e}$$ mν¯e with a sensitivity of $${0.2}\,{\hbox {eV}/\hbox {c}^2}$$ 0.2eV/c2 using a gaseous tritium source combined with the MAC-E filter technique. A low background rate is crucial to achieving the proposed sensitivity, and dedicated measurements have been performed to study possible sources of background electrons. In this work, we test the hypothesis that gamma radiation from external radioactive sources significantly increases the rate of background events created in the main spectrometer (MS) and observed in the focal-plane detector. Using detailed simulations of the gamma flux in the e…

Spontaneous Magnetization in Ni−Al and Ni−Fe Layered Double Hydroxides

2008

Layered double hydroxides containing paramagnetic Ni (II) and diamagnetic/paramagnetic Al (III)/Fe (III) ions have been prepared and characterized. Ni 2Al(OH) 6(NO 3). nH 2O ( 1), Ni 2Fe(OH) 6(NO 3). nH 2O ( 2), Ni 2Fe(OH) 6(C 6H 8O 4) 0.5. nH 2O ( 3), and Ni 2Fe(OH) 6(C 10H 16O 4) 0.5. nH 2O ( 4) were prepared by coprecipitation at controlled pH as polycrystalline materials with the typical brucite-like structure, with alternating layers of hydroxide and the corresponding anions, which determine the interlayer separation. Magnetic studies show the appearance of spontaneous magnetization between 2 and 15 K for these compounds. Interestingly, the onset temperature for spontaneous magnetizati…

Magnetic susceptibility of multiferroics and chemical ordering

2017

Magnetic susceptibility of two types of perovskite compounds A(Fe0.5M0.5)O3 A=Ba,Sr with M=Nb and Sb differing in the degree of chemical ordering was studied between 2 and 380 K. In the low temperature region, these compounds exhibit antiferromagnetic and spin-glass transition at T = 16−30 K. For the ordered compounds (M = Sb) the inverse susceptibility depends on T linearly up to the highest temperatures used. This enables the determination of the Weiss temperature θ and effective moment of the Fe3+ ion expressed by a number of Bohr magnetons, peff. In contrast to it, the compounds with M = Nb are characterized by a higher degree of the glassines and by a concave character of the inverse s…

Disordered and Frustrated Spin Systems

2007

A brief review on the effects of quenched disorder on magnetic ordering is given. This disorder can be due to dilution of a ferro- or antiferromagnetic crystal with nonmagnetic atoms, or due to noncrystallinity (amorphous magnetic systems). This disorder in the positions of the magnetic atoms leads to disorder in the exchange interactions between spins. If the disorder is sufficiently weak, the critical temperature of magnetic ordering is somewhat decreased, and the critical behavior may change, but the nature of ordering is maintained. However, if the disorder is sufficiently strong, magnetic long-range order may disappear altogether at a percolation threshold, or a new type of order may a…

Self-assembly, metal binding ability, and magnetic properties of dinickel(II) and dicobalt(II) triple mesocates

2012

Two metallacyclic complexes of general formula Na-8[(M2L3)-L-II]center dot xH(2)O [M = Ni (4) and Co (5) with x = 15 (4) and 17 (5)] have been self-assembled in aqueous solution from N,N'-1,3-phenylenebis(oxamic acid) (H4L) and M2+ ions in a ligand/metal molar ratio of 3 : 2 in the presence of NaOH acting as base. X-Ray structural analyses of 4 and 5 show triple-stranded, dinuclear anions of the meso-helicate-type (so-called mesocates) with C-3h molecular symmetry. The two octahedral metal-tris(oxamate) moieties of opposite chiralities (Delta, Lambda form) are connected by three m-phenylene spacers at intermetallic distances of 6.822(2) (4) and 6.868(2) angstrom (5) to give a metallacryptan…

Room temperature antiferromagnetic resonance and inverse spin-Hall voltage in canted antiferromagnets

2021

We study theoretically and experimentally the spin pumping signals induced by the resonance of canted antiferromagnets with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and demonstrate that they can generate easily observable inverse spin-Hall voltages. Using a bilayer of hematite/heavy metal as a model system, we measure at room temperature the antiferromagnetic resonance and an associated inverse spin-Hall voltage, as large as in collinear antiferromagnets. As expected for coherent spin pumping, we observe that the sign of the inverse spin-Hall voltage provides direct information about the mode handedness as deduced by comparing hematite, chromium oxide and the ferrimagnet yttrium-iron garnet. Our r…

Single-Molecule-Magnet Fe Fe and Antiferromagnetic Fe Coordination Clusters

2019

Supported by endogenous (part of the ligand, in-built) phenoxo bridges provided by the ligand 2,6-bis[{{(5-bromo-2-hydroxybenzyl)}{(2-(pyridylethyl)}amino}methyl]-4-methylphenol) (H3L), in its deprotonated form, exogenous (not part of the ligand, externally added or generated) oxo-/hydroxo- and acetato-bridged [FeII4FeIII2(O)2(O2CMe)4(L)2]·4Et2O (1) and [FeIII4(OH)2(O2CMe)3(L)2](ClO4)·3MeCN·2H2O (2) coordination clusters have been synthesized and structurally characterized. Complexes 1 and 2 have μ4-O and μ3-OH bridges, respectively. Magnetic studies on 1 reveal slow magnetic relaxation below 2 K. Both in-phase ( χ'M) and out-of-phase (χ″M) magnetic susceptibility were found to be frequency…

Influence of Metal Dilution on the Light‐Induced Spin Transition in Two 1D Chain Compounds: [Fe x Zn 1– x (btzp) 3 ](BF 4 ) 2 and [Fe x Zn 1– x (endi…

2008

The thermal and light-induced spin transitions in [FexZn1–x(btzp)3](BF4)2 and [FexZn1–x(endi)3](BF4)2 {btzp = 1,2-bis(tetrazol-1-yl)propane; endi = 1,2-bis(tetrazol-1-yl)ethane} chain compounds have been investigated by magnetic susceptibility, photomagnetism and diffuse reflectivity measurements. These compounds display a thermal spin transition and the Light-Induced Excited Spin State Trapping (LIESST) effect at low temperature. For each compound, the thermal spin transition temperature, T1/2, and the relaxation temperature of the photo-induced high-spin state, T(LIESST), have been systematically determined. A decrease in T1/2 induces an increase in T(LIESST). The results are discussed an…
