Optically active oxygen-deficiency-related centers in amorphous silicon dioxide

Abstract The spectroscopic properties, structure and interconversions of optically active oxygen-deficiency-related point defects in vitreous silica are reviewed. These defects, the E′-centers (oxygen vacancies with a trapped hole or 3-fold-coordinated silicons), different variants of diamagnetic `ODCs' (oxygen-deficiency centers), and their Ge-related analogs play a key role in the fiber-optic Bragg grating writing processes. The controversy surrounding the structural models for the Si- and Ge-related ODCs is discussed and the similarity between the bulk and surface point defects in silica is emphasized. Large enhancement of spin pumping due to the surface bound states in normal metal/superconductor structures

We show that the spin pumping from ferromagnetic insulator into the adjacent metallic spin sink can be strongly stimulated by the superconducting correlations. The key physical mechanism responsible for this effect is the presence of Andreev bound states at the ferromagnetic insulator/superconductor interface. We consider the minimal model when these states appear because of the suppressed pairing constant within the interfacial normal layer. For thin normal layers we obtain a strongly peaked temperature dependence of the Gilbert damping coefficient which has been recently observed in such systems. Energy of dendritic avalanches in thin-film superconductors

A method for calculating stored magnetic energy in a thin superconducting film based on quantitative magneto-optical imaging is developed. Energy and magnetic moment are determined with these calculations for full hysteresis loops in a thin film of the superconductor NbN. Huge losses in energy are observed when dendritic avalanches occur. Magnetic energy, magnetic moment, sheet current and magnetic flux distributions, all extracted from the same calibrated magneto-optical images, are analyzed and discussed. Gold Nanowired: A Linear (Au25)n Polymer from Au25 Molecular Clusters

Au25(SR)18 has provided fundamental insights into the properties of clusters protected by monolayers of thiolated ligands (SR). Because of its ultrasmall core, 1 nm, Au25(SR)18 displays molecular behavior. We prepared a Au25 cluster capped by n-butanethiolates (SBu), obtained its structure by single-crystal X-ray crystallography, and studied its properties both experimentally and theoretically. Whereas in solution Au25(SBu)18(0) is a paramagnetic molecule, in the crystal it becomes a linear polymer of Au25 clusters connected via single Au-Au bonds and stabilized by proper orientation of clusters and interdigitation of ligands. Rigidity and sharp stability estimates for hypersurfaces with constant and almost-constant nonlocal mean curvature

We prove that the boundary of a (not necessarily connected) bounded smooth set with constant nonlocal mean curvature is a sphere. More generally, and in contrast with what happens in the classical case, we show that the Lipschitz constant of the nonlocal mean curvature of such a boundary controls its $C^2$-distance from a single sphere. The corresponding stability inequality is obtained with a sharp decay rate.
A rigidity problem on the round sphere

We consider a class of overdetermined problems in rotationally symmetric spaces, which reduce to the classical Serrin's overdetermined problem in the case of the Euclidean space. We prove some general integral identities for rotationally symmetric spaces which imply a rigidity result in the case of the round sphere.
Failure of topological rigidity results for the measure contraction property

We give two examples of metric measure spaces satisfying the measure contraction property MCP(K,N) but having different topological dimensions at different regions of the space. The first one satisfies MCP(0,3) and contains a subset isometric to $\mathbb{R}$, but does not topologically split. The second space satisfies MCP(2,3) and has diameter $\pi$, which is the maximal possible diameter for a space satisfying MCP(N-1,N), but is not a topological spherical suspension. The latter example gives an answer to a question by Ohta.

Magnetic Langmuir–Blodgett films of ferritin with different iron loadings

Abstract Magnetic Langmuir–Blodgett multilayers of two ferritin molecules 1 and 2 , containing, respectively, 4220 and 3062 Fe atoms have been prepared by using the adsorption properties of a 6/1 mixed monolayer of dioctadecyldimethylammonium bromide (DODABr) and methyl stearate (SME). Transfer ratios close to unity were reached giving rise to LB films with a strong red colour. Infrared and UV–vis spectroscopy indicates that ferritin molecules are incorporated within the LB films. Magnetic measurements show that the superparamagnetic properties of these molecules are preserved. Thus, a marked hysteresis loop of magnetisation is obtained for LB films of 1 and 2 with a coercive field of 3400 …
Direct imaging of current-induced antiferromagnetic switching revealing a pure thermomagnetoelastic switching mechanism in NiO

We unambiguously identify the origin of the current-induced magnetic switching of insulating antiferromagnet/heavy metal bilayers. Previously, different reorientations of the Neel order for the same current direction were reported for different device geometries and different switching mechanisms were proposed. Here, we combine concurrent electrical readout and optical imaging of the switching of antiferromagnetic domains with simulations of the current-induced temperature and strain gradients. By comparing the switching in specially engineered NiO/Pt device and pulsing geometries, we can rule out spin-orbit torque based mechanisms and identify a thermomagnetoelastic mechanism to dominate t…
