Magnetoelectric properties of epitaxialFe3O4thin films on (011) PMN-PT piezosubstrates
2015
We determine the magnetic and magnetotransport properties of 33 nm thick ${\mathrm{Fe}}_{3}{\mathrm{O}}_{4}$ films epitaxially deposited by rf-magnetron sputtering on unpoled (011) ${[{\mathrm{PbMg}}_{1/3}{\mathrm{Nb}}_{2/3}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}]}_{0.68}\ensuremath{-}{[{\mathrm{PbTiO}}_{3}]}_{0.32}$ (PMN-PT) substrates. The magnetoresistance (MR), as well as the magnetization reversal, strongly depend on the in-plane crystallographic direction of the epitaxial (011) ${\mathrm{Fe}}_{3}{\mathrm{O}}_{4}$ film and strain. When the magnetic field is applied along [100], the magnetization loops are slanted and the sign of the longitudinal MR changes from positive to negative around the Verwey transiti…
Dielectric and magnetic properties of CdMoO4:Gd3+ single crystal
2014
Broadband dielectric spectroscopy and magnetic measurements provide experimental evidence that the CdMoO4:Gd 3+ single crystal is the paramagnet with low relative dielectric permittivity (er 8), which slightly depends on the temperature and frequencies. Magnetization with zero coercivity and remanence is almost a universal function of l0H/T, characterizing superparamagnetic-like behavior. These results are being considered in a framework of the random distribution of the Ga 3+ ions in the tetragonal structure.
Inhibition of the detrimental double vortex-kink formation in thick YBa2Cu3O7films with BaZrO3nanorods
2013
We investigated the temperature (T) variation of the normalized magnetization relaxation rate S and of the corresponding normalized vortex-creep activation energy U* = T/S for YBa2Cu3O7 films containing BaZrO3 nanorods, with the external magnetic field H oriented perpendicular to the film surface. It was found that by increasing the film thickness and using nanodot decorated substrates the high-T S(T) maximum appearing at low H is substituted by a minimum in S(T). As revealed by the analysis of the current density dependence of U*, this behaviour is due to the inhibition of vortex excitations involving double vortex-kinks and superkinks formation in the investigated thick films, owing to th…
Temperature-driven spin reorientation transition inFe∕Mo(110)nanostructures
2007
Using low-temperature spin polarized scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, we observed a temperature-driven spin-reorientation transition (SRT) in Fe double layer (DL) nanostructures grown by step-flow growth on Mo(110). Magnetization components along the vertical and horizontal directions were detected with $4∕16$ ML Co∕10 ML $\mathrm{Au}∕\mathrm{W}(110)$ tips with out-of-plane (4 ML Co) and in-plane (16 ML Co) magnetic sensitivities. The magnetic easy axis of the Fe DL nanostructures continuously rotates from the vertical direction at $5\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{K}$ to an in-plane direction at $20\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{K}$. The rotation angle is independent …
Electrical switching of perpendicular magnetization in a single ferromagnetic layer
2020
We report on the efficient spin-orbit torque (SOT) switching in a single ferromagnetic layer induced by a new type of inversion asymmetry, the composition gradient. The SOT of 6- to 60-nm epitaxial FePt thin films with a $L{1}_{0}$ phase is investigated. The magnetization of the FePt single layer can be reversibly switched by applying electrical current with a moderate current density. Different from previously reported SOTs which either decreases with or does not change with the film thickness, the SOT in FePt increases with the film thickness. We found the SOT in FePt can be attributed to the composition gradient along the film normal direction. A linear correlation between the SOT and th…
Electric-Field Control of Spin-Orbit Torques in Perpendicularly Magnetized W/CoFeB/MgO Films
2020
Controlling magnetism by electric fields offers a highly attractive perspective for designing future generations of energy-efficient information technologies. Here, we demonstrate that the magnitude of current-induced spin-orbit torques in thin perpendicularly magnetized CoFeB films can be tuned and even increased by electric-field generated piezoelectric strain. Using theoretical calculations, we uncover that the subtle interplay of spin-orbit coupling, crystal symmetry, and orbital polarization is at the core of the observed strain dependence of spin-orbit torques. Our results open a path to integrating two energy efficient spin manipulation approaches, the electric-field-induced strain a…
Thin epitaxial films of the Heusler compound
2005
Abstract We prepared thin films of the Heusler compound Co 2 Cr 0.6 Fe 0.4 Al with the B2 structure on a-plane (1 1 2 ¯ 0) Al 2 O 3 by sputtering. Films grown at high temperatures ( T ⩾ 600 ∘ C ) on Al 2 O 3 are fully epitaxial with the (1 1 0) and (1 1 ¯ 0) planes of the film parallel to the (1 1 2 ¯ 0) and (0 0 0 1) planes of the substrate, respectively. These epitaxial films possess a higher surface roughness than films grown at room temperature. The films show nearly rectangular hysteresis loops with coercive fields of the order of 10 mT. Magnetooptical Kerr measurements show an in-plane anisotropy of the magnetization with the easy axis in { 0 0 1 } direction. Hall measurements s…
Thermal fluctuations and longitudinal relaxation of single-domain magnetic particles at elevated temperatures
2004
We present numerical and analytical results for the swiching times of magnetic nanoparticles with uniaxial anisotropy at elevated temperatures, including the vicinity of T_c. The consideration is based in the Landau-Lifshitz-Bloch equation that includes the relaxation of the magnetization magnitude M. The resulting switching times are shorter than those following from the naive Landau-Lifshitz equation due to (i) additional barrier lowering because of the reduction of M at the barrier and (ii) critical divergence of the damping parameters.
Charge-carrier density collapse in and epitaxial thin films
2000
We measured the temperature dependence of the linear high field pH of La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 Tc = 232K) and La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 Tc = 345K) thin films in the temperature range from 4 K up to 360 K in magnetic fields up to 20 T. At low temperatures we find a charge-carrier density of 1.3 and 1.4 holes per unit cell for the Ca- and Sr-doped compound, respectively. In this temperature range electron-magnon scattering contributes to the longitudinal resistivity. At the ferromagnetic transition temperature Tc a dramatic drop in the number of charge-carriers n down to 0.6 holes per unit cell, accompanied by an increase in unit cell volume, is observed. Corrections of the Hall data due to a non saturated ma…
Magnetic dichroism in photoemission with unpolarized light.
1994
A magnetic dichroism in photoemission from ferromagnets induced by unpolarized light is observed for the first time in the valence band region as well as for surface states. The study was carried out with magnetized Fe(110), Co(0001), and Gd(0001) films grown epitaxially on W(110). This phenomenon leads to an intensity asymmetry for opposite directions of the sample magnetization. It can be easily used for a routine laboratory diagnostic of magnetic behavior. A simple theoretical interpretation of the phenomenon based on the atomic model is given.
