Nuclear magnetic resonance: The contrast imaging problem
2011
Starting as a tool for characterization of organic molecules, the use of NMR has spread to areas as diverse as pharmacology, medical diagnostics (medical resonance imaging) and structural biology. Recent advancements on the study of spin dynamics strongly suggest the efficiency of geometric control theory to analyze the optimal synthesis. This paper focuses on a new approach to the contrast imaging problem using tools from geometric optimal control. It concerns the study of an uncoupled two-spin system and the problem is to bring one spin to the origin of the Bloch ball while maximizing the modulus of the magnetization vector of the second spin. It can be stated as a Mayer-type optimal prob…
Ising systems with pairwise competing surface fields
2005
The magnetization distribution and phase behaviour of large but finite Ising simple cubic L × L × L lattices in d = 3 dimensions and square L × L lattices in d = 2 dimensions are studied for the case where four free boundaries are present, at which surface fields +Hs act on one pair of opposite boundaries while surface fields −Hs act on the other pair (in d = 3, periodic boundary conditions are used for the remaining pair). Both the distribution PL(m) of the global magnetization and also the distribution of the local magnetization m(x,z) are obtained by Monte Carlo simulations, where x and z denote the coordinates when the boundaries are oriented along the x-axis and z-axis (in d = 2); or a…
Phase transitions in nanosystems caused by interface motion: the Ising bipyramid with competing surface fields.
2005
The phase behavior of a large but finite Ising ferromagnet in the presence of competing surface magnetic fields +/- H_s is studied by Monte Carlo simulations and by phenomenological theory. Specifically, the geometry of a double pyramid of height 2L is considered, such that the surface field is positive on the four upper triangular surfaces of the bi-pyramid and negative on the lower ones. It is shown that the total spontaneous magnetization vanishes (for L -> infinity) at the temperature T_f(H), related to the "filling transition" of a semi-infinite pyramid, which can be well below the critical temperature of the bulk. The discontinuous vanishing of the magnetization is accompanied by a…
Carrier-induced ferromagnetism in two-dimensional magnetically doped semiconductor structures
2021
We show theoretically that the magnetic ions, randomly distributed in a two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor system, can generate a ferromagnetic long-range order via the RKKY interaction. The main physical reason is the discrete (rather than continuous) symmetry of the 2D Ising model of the spin-spin interaction mediated by the spin-orbit coupling of 2D free carriers, which precludes the validity of the Mermin-Wagner theorem. Further, the analysis clearly illustrates the crucial role of the molecular field fluctuations as opposed to the mean field. The developed theoretical model describes the desired magnetization and phase-transition temperature ${T}_{c}$ in terms of a single parameter, na…
Dynamics of a flexible magnetic chain in a rotating magnetic field.
2004
The model of an elastic magnetic rod is applied for a study of a behavior of the flexible magnetic particle chain in a rotating magnetic field. By numerical simulation it is shown that behavior of a flexible magnetic chain is characterized by the existence of a critical frequency beyond which the dynamics of the rod is periodic with subsequent stages of bending and straightening. The value of the critical frequency found is explained by a simple model. Below the critical frequency the chain is bent and rotates synchronously with a field. It is illustrated that in particular cases the considered model reproduces phenomena observed experimentally and numerically for the magnetic particle chai…
Critical properties and finite-size effects of the five-dimensional Ising model
1985
Monte Carlo calculations of the thermodynamic properties (energy, specific heat, magnetization suceptibility, renormalized coupling) of the nearest-neighbour Ising ferromagnet on a five-dimensional hypercubic lattice are presented and analyzed. Lattices of linear dimensionsL=3, 4, 5, 6, 7 with periodic boundary conditions are studied, and a finite size scaling analysis is performed, further confirming the recent suggestion thatL does not scale with the correlation length ξ (the temperature variation of which near the critical temperatureT c is ξ∝|1-T/T c |−1/2), but rather with a “thermodynamic length”l (withl∝|1-T/T c |−2/d ,d=5 here). The susceptibility (extrapolated to the thermodynamic …
Quantification of Competing Magnetic States and Switching Pathways in Curved Nanowires by Direct Dynamic Imaging.
2020
For viable applications, spintronic devices based, for example, on domain wall motion need to be highly reliable with stable magnetization states and highly reproducible switching pathways transforming one state to another. The existence of multiple stable states and switching pathways in a system is a definitive barrier for device operation, yet rare and stochastic events are difficult to detect and understand. We demonstrate an approach to quantify competing magnetic states and stochastic switching pathways based on time-resolved scanning electron microscopy with polarization analysis, applied to the technologically relevant control of vortex domain wall chirality via field and curvature …
Longitudinal and Transverse Correlation Functions in the 4 Model below and near the Critical Point
2010
We have extended our method of grouping Feynman diagrams (GFD theory) to study the transverse and longitudinal correlation functions G⊥(k) and G‖(k) in φ model below the critical point (T < Tc) in the presence of an infinitesimal external field. Our method allows a qualitative analysis without cutting the perturbation series. The long-wave limit k → 0 has been studied at T < Tc, showing that G⊥(k) a k−λ⊥ and G‖(k) b k−λ‖ with exponents d/2 < λ⊥ < 2 and λ‖ = 2λ⊥−d are the physical solutions of our equations at the spatial dimensionality 2 < d < 4, which coincides with the asymptotic solution at T → Tc as well as with a nonperturbative renormalization group (RG) analysis provided in our paper…
On the existence of a reverse shock in magnetized gamma-ray burst ejecta
2007
The role of magnetic fields in gamma-ray burst (GRB) flows remains controversial. The study of the early afterglow phases and, in particular, of the reverse shock dynamics and associated emission offers a promising probe of the magnetization of the ejecta. In this paper, we derive the conditions for the existence of a reverse shock in arbitrarily magnetized ejecta that decelerate and interact with the circumburst medium. Both constant and wind-like density profiles are considered. We show, in contrast to previous estimates, that ejecta with magnetization σ0 >∼ 1 are not crossed by a reverse shock for a large fraction of the parameter space relevant to GRB flows. Allowing for shell spreading…
Analysis of Optical Systems, Contrast Depth, and Measurement of Electric and Magnetic Field Distribution on the Object's Surface in Mirror Electron M…
2011
Abstract The contrast depth is analyzed as well, that is the sensitivity of electron mirror microscope to disorders of homogeneity on the object (local magnetic and electric fields, surface relief). Because of the latter ones, electron trajectories feel disturbances (electrons acquire additional increment velocity in radial and azimuthal directions), which leads to the shift of the observed point on the screen and, as a consequence, to the image contrast. Since the electron energy, when reflected, tends to zero, electrons are influenced by heterogeneities for a long time. It causes high sensitivity to heterogeneities, up to the crossing of electron trajectories (caustics are generated). The…
