Activity from the Be/X-ray binary system V0332+53 during its intermediate-luminosity outburst in 2008

Aims: We present a study of the Be/X-ray binary system V 0332+53 with the main goal of characterizing its behavior mainly during the intermediate-luminosity X-ray event on 2008. In addition, we aim to contribute to the understanding of the global behavior of the donor companion by including optical data from our dedicated campaign starting on 2006. Methods: V 0332+53 was observed by RXTE and Swift during the decay of the intermediate-luminosity X-ray outburst of 2008, as well as with Suzaku before the rising of the third normal outburst of the 2010 series. Coherent Manipulation of Polarization in Mixed-Valence Compounds by Electric Pulse via Landau–Zener Transitions

In this contribution, we predict and theoretically investigate the effects of the electric field pulse in mixed valence (MV) dimers. These systems exhibit bistability with a large internal dipole moment mediated by the itinerant electron trapped by the vibronic coupling. In this sense, they are similar to single molecular magnets (SMMs) that are bistable systems possessing large long-living magnetization and exhibiting Landau−Zener (LZ) transitions. Noncontact speckle-based optical sensor for detection of glucose concentration using magneto-optic effect

We experimentally verify a speckle-based technique for noncontact measurement of glucose concentration in the bloodstream. The final device is intended to be a single wristwatch-style device containing a laser, a camera, and an alternating current (ac) electromagnet generated by a solenoid. The experiments presented are performed in vitro as proof of the concept. When a glucose substance is inserted into a solenoid generating an ac magnetic field, it exhibits Faraday rotation, which affects the temporal changes of the secondary speckle pattern distributions. Neutron diffraction studies of structural and magnetic properties of niobium doped cobaltites.

Neutron powder diffraction studies of the structural and magnetic properties of the La(1-x)Sr(x)Nb(y)Co(1-y)O(3) solid solutions (x = 0.2, 0.5; y = 0, 0.075, 0.1) have been performed. Substitution of Co(2+) by Nb(5+) prevents the formation of Co(4+) and leads to stabilization of the Co(3+) ions in the high- or intermediate-spin state. This is accompanied by the significant change of the Co-O bond length as well as Co-O-Co bond angle in the CoO(6) octahedron. The obtained data are in agreement with the negative sign of the magnetic exchange interactions Co(3+)-O-Co(3+) in a relatively wide range of the Co-O-Co bond angles. Static magnetic field influence on rat brain function detected by heart rate monitoring.

The aim of the present study was to identify the effects of a static magnetic field (SMF) on rat brain structures that control autonomic functions, specifically heart rate and heart rhythmicity. The experiments were carried out on 44 male Wistar rats under ketamine-xylazine anesthesia. SMF was induced using samarium-cobalt fused magnets (20 x 20 x 10 mm in size) placed bitemporally. Magnetic induction intensity was 100 mT on the surface of the head. Duration of magnetic field application was 15 min. Abstract Speech perception is dynamic and shows changes across development. In parallel, functional differences in brain development over time have been well documented and these differences may interact with changes in speech perception during infancy and childhood. Further, there is evidence that the two hemispheres contribute unequally to speech segmentation at the sentence and phonemic levels.
