Magneto‐elastic oscillations modulating the emission of magnetars

2017

Magneto-elastic oscillations of neutron stars are believed to explain observed quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in the decaying tail of the giant flares of highly magnetized neutron stars (magnetars). Strong efforts of the theoretical modelling from different groups have increased our understanding of this phenomenon significantly. Here, we discuss some constraints on the matter in neutron stars that arise if the interpretation of the observations in terms of superfluid, magneto-elastic oscillations is correct. To explain the observed modulation of the light curve of the giant flare, we describe a model that allows the QPOs to couple to the stellar exterior through the magnetic field. In …

The force-free twisted magnetosphere of a neutron star – II. Degeneracies of the Grad–Shafranov equation

2017

We extend our previous study of equilibrium solutions of non-rotating force-free magnetospheres of neutron stars. We show that multiple solutions exist for the same sets of parameters, implying that the solutions are degenerate. We are able to obtain configurations with disconnected field lines, however, in nearly all cases these correspond to degenerate higher energy solutions. We carry out a wide parametric search in order to understand the properties of the solutions. We confirm our previous results that the lower energy solutions have up to $\sim 25\%$ more energy than the vacuum case, helicity of the order of $\sim 5$ (in some defined units), maximum twist of $\sim 1.5$ rad, and a dipo…

The force-free twisted magnetosphere of a neutron star

2016

We present a detailed analysis of the properties of twisted, force-free magnetospheres of non-rotating neutron stars, which are of interest in the modelling of magnetar properties and evolution. In our models the magnetic field smoothly matches to a current-free (vacuum) solution at some large external radius, and they are specifically built to avoid pathological surface currents at any of the interfaces. By exploring a large range of parameters, we find a few remarkable general trends. We find that the total dipolar moment can be increased by up to $40\%$ with respect to a vacuum model with the same surface magnetic field, due to the contribution of magnetospheric currents to the global ma…

Accretion disk coronae of intermediate polar cataclysmic variables

2017

Context. Intermediate polar cataclysmic variables (IPCV) contain a magnetic, rotating white dwarf surrounded by a magnetically truncated accretion disk. To explain their strong flickering X-ray emission, accretion has been successfully taken into account. Nevertheless, observations suggest that accretion phenomena might not be the only process behind it. An intense flaring activity occurring on the surface of the disk may generate a corona, contribute to the thermal X-ray emission, and influence the system stability. Aims. Our purposes are: investigating the formation of an extended corona above the accretion disk, due to an intense flaring activity occurring on the disk surface; studying t…

From equilibrium to steady state: The transient dynamics of colloidal liquids under shear

2008

We investigate stresses and particle motion during the start up of flow in a colloidal dispersion close to arrest into a glassy state. A combination of molecular dynamics simulation, mode coupling theory and confocal microscopy experiment is used to investigate the origins of the widely observed stress overshoot and (previously not reported) super-diffusive motion in the transient dynamics. A link between the macro-rheological stress versus strain curves and the microscopic particle motion is established. Negative correlations in the transient auto-correlation function of the potential stresses are found responsible for both phenomena, and arise even for homogeneous flows and almost Gaussia…

Colloidal crystallization in the quasi-two-dimensional induced by electrolyte gradients.

2012

We investigated driven crystal formation events in thin layers of sedimented colloidal particles under low salt conditions. Using optical microscopy, we observe particles in a thermodynamically stable colloidal fluid to move radially converging towards cation exchange resin fragments acting as seed particles. When the local particle concentration has become sufficiently large, subsequently crystallization occurs. Brownian dynamics simulations of a 2D system of purely repulsive point-like particles exposed to an attractive potential, yield strikingly similar scenarios, and kinetics of accumulation and micro-structure formation. This offers the possibility of flexibly designing and manufactur…

NMR Studies of Single-File Diffusion in Unidimensional Channel Zeolites

1996

Single-file diffusion is the restricted propagation of particles that cannot pass each other. The occurrence of this phenomenon should be reflected by a change in the time dependence of the mean particle displacement in comparison with ordinary diffusion. Although this process is considered to be the rate-controlling mechanism in a large variety of processes, so far no direct evidence of this phenomenon has been provided. Diffusion measurements made with pulsed field gradient nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) in unidimensional pore systems (zeolites AlPO4-5 and Theta-1) reflect the expected time dependence of single-file diffusion.

Spin down of an Accreting Millisecond Pulsar, the case of XTE J1814‐338

2007

We report about a timing analysis performed on the data gathered by RXTE of the accreting millisecond pulsar XTE J1814-338 during its 2003 outburst. The first full orbital solution of this binary system is given. Moreover the evolution of the phase of the pulsed emission reveals that the rotating compact object is spinning down at a rate ν˙ = (-6.7 +/- 0.7) × 10-14 Hz/s, while accreting. This behavior is considered as a result of the braking effect due to the interaction between the magnetosphere and the inner parts of the accretion disc, in the case of an accretion rate low enough to allow the expansion of the magnetospheric radius to the corotation limit. In this context we derive an esti…

Principles of Ion Traps

2008

Three-dimensional confinement of charged particles requires a potential energy minimum at some point in space in order that the corresponding force is directed toward that point in all three dimensions. In general, the dependence of the magnitude of this force on the coordinates can have an arbitrary form; however, it is convenient to have a binding force that is harmonic, since this simplifies the analytical description of the particle motion. Thus, we assume
