Unidirectional Magnon-Driven Domain Wall Motion Due to the Interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction
2018
We demonstrate a unidirectional motion of a quasiparticle without an explicit symmetry breaking along the space-time coordinate of the particle motion. This counterintuitive behavior originates from a combined action of two intrinsic asymmetries in the other two directions. We realize this idea with the magnon-driven motion of a magnetic domain wall in thin films with interfacial asymmetry. Contrary to previous studies, the domain wall moves along the same direction regardless of the magnon-flow direction. Our general symmetry analysis and numerical simulation reveal that the odd order contributions from the interfacial asymmetry is unidirectional, which is dominant over bidirectional contr…
Correlation dimension and affinity of AE data and bicolored noise
1993
This paper is concerned with the general question of the dynamics of the magnetosphere. In general, to solve the dynamics of the magnetosphere one has to solve magnetohydrodynamic equations with some appropriate set of boundary conditions. This results in a very complex solution, which gives indications of being chaotic. The question of the chaotic nature of the magnetospheric dynamics has been addressed by various authors by looking at the correlation dimension of the auroral electrojet index. There has been disagreement on the outcome of such experiments, so the authors report on a detailed analysis of the auroral electrojet index time series. They find a correlation dimension of 3.4. For…
Magnetic shielding of soft protons in future X-ray telescopes: the case of the ATHENA Wide Field Imager
2018
Both the interplanetary space and the Earth magnetosphere are populated by low energy ($\leq300$ keV) protons that are potentially able to scatter on the reflecting surface of Wolter-I optics of X-ray focusing telescopes and reach the focal plane. This phenomenon, depending on the X-ray instrumentation, can dramatically increase the background level, reducing the sensitivity or, in the most extreme cases, compromising the observation itself. The use of a magnetic diverter, deflecting protons away from the field of view, requires a detailed characterization of their angular and energy distribution when exiting the mirror. We present the first end-to-end Geant4 simulation of proton scattering…
Modulating the magnetosphere of magnetars by internal magneto-elastic oscillations
2014
We couple internal torsional, magneto-elastic oscillations of highly magnetized neutron stars (magnetars) to their magnetospheres. The corresponding axisymmetric perturbations of the external magnetic field configuration evolve as a sequence of linear, force-free equilibria that are completely determined by the background magnetic field configuration and by the perturbations of the magnetic field at the surface. The perturbations are obtained from simulations of magneto-elastic oscillations in the interior of the magnetar. While such oscillations can excite travelling Alfv\'en waves in the exterior of the star only in a very limited region close to the poles, they still modulate the near ma…
Fallback accretion onto magnetized neutron stars and the hidden magnetic field model
2015
The observation of several neutron stars with relatively low values of the surface magnetic field found in supernova remnants has led in recent years to controversial interpretations. A possible explanation is the slow rotation of the proto-neutron star at birth which is unable to amplify its magnetic field to typical pulsar levels. An alternative possibility, the hidden magnetic field scenario, seems to be favoured over the previous one due to the observation of three low magnetic field magnetars. This scenario considers the accretion of the fallback of the supernova debris onto the neutron star as the responsible for the observed low magnetic field. In this work, we have studied under whi…
Statistical analysis of the influence of forces on particles in EM driven recirculated turbulent flows
2011
The present paper contains an analysis of the statistical distribution of forces affecting non-conducting particles dispersed in an EM induced recirculated flow in induction furnaces. The simulation is conducted adopting the LES-based Euler-Lagrange approach in the limit of dilute conditions (one-way coupling). It is done by means of a development of OpenFOAM software code. The used Lagrange equation for particle tracking includes drag, EM, buoyancy, lift, acceleration and added mass forces. The relevant approximations for the forces are chosen on the basis of the statistical analysis of the non-dimensional parameters (particle Reynolds number, shear stress and acceleration parameter). The …
Relativistic approach to positronium levels in a strong magnetic field
2001
We have investigated the bound states of an electron and positron in superstrong magnetic fields typical for neutron stars. The complete relativistic problem of positronium in a strong magnetic field has not been succesfully solved up to now. In particular, we have studied the positronium when it moves relativistically across the magnetic field. A number of problems which deal with the pulsar magnetosphere, as well as the evolution of protoneutron stars, could be considered as a field for application.
Modulating magnetar emission by magneto-elastic oscillations
2014
We present a new numerical tool to calculate the emission of highly magnetized neutron stars (magnetars) and apply it to describe the quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) observed in magnetar giant flares. In previous work we have developed a model of magneto-elastic oscillations of magnetars that allows to reproduce the observed frequencies. These QPOs can couple to the star's exterior through the magnetic field and induce currents in the magnetosphere that provide scattering targets for resonant cyclotron scattering of the photons. The scattering is calculated with a Monte-Carlo approach and it is coupled to a code that calculates the momentum distribution of the charge carriers as an one-d…
Legri Background. Short Term Variability
2001
Background modelling for LEO satellites with high orbital inclination is not an easy task. The diffuse background component is dominated by the background coming from strong interactions with Earth magnetosphere trapped particles. Magnetic shielding is variable along the orbits and crosses through the SAA induce high radioactivity decay counting ratios. The aim of this paper is to present a model for the background total counting ratio of the 17 operative CdZnTe detectors on LEGRI in the short time scales and for observing periods outside crosses through SAA having enough time to cool LEGRI after the last SAA transit. Fluxes measured have been modelled in terms of the Mcllwain parameter L u…
Three-dimensional dynamics of a particle with a finite energy of magnetic anisotropy in a rotating magnetic field.
2013
A model of a single ferromagnetic particle with a finite coupling energy of the magnetic moment with the body of the particle is formulated, and regimes of its motion in a rotating magnetic field are investigated. Regimes are possible that are synchronous and asynchronous with the field. In a synchronous regime the easy axis of the particle is in the plane of the rotating magnetic field at low frequencies (a planar regime) and on the cone at high frequencies (a precession regime). The stability of these regimes is investigated, and it is shown that the precession regime is stable for field strengths below the critical value. In a particular range of field strength value, irreversible jumps …
