Experiences in Sense Making: Health Science Students’ I-Positioning in an Online Philosophy of Science Course
2015
This article reports on a qualitative study on the dialogical approach to learning in the context of higher education. The aim was to shed light on the I-Position and multivoicedness in students’ identity-building, and to provide empirical substantiation for these theoretical constructs, focusing especially on the connection between personal knowledge and theoretical knowledge. The study explored how health science students’ reflections on their work and discipline-related experiences provided resources for making personal sense of and understanding the subject studied. The students undertook an online course on the philosophy of science. To study students’ internal and external dialogue in…
Case study of why information security investment fail?
2015
Tämä tutkielma keskittyy tietoturvainvestointien päätöksentekoprosessiin. Ta- voitteena on tutkia miksi tietoturvainvestointipäätös hylätään. Tutkimuksen teoreettinen tausta perustuu aiemmin suoritettuun tutkimukseen, mikä on pää- osin käsitellyt tietoturvainvestointeja joko optimaalisen investointitason näkö- kulmasta, tai tehokkaan investointitason näkökulmasta.
Learning strategies, decision-making styles and conscious use of technologies in initial teacher education
2018
The aim of this research is to develop a toolkit enabling to observe transversal skills of future teachers. The research was carried out with 236 students attending the Educational Technologies course at the Primary Education program at Palermo University, during academic year 2017/2018. The research hypothesis is that the knowledge of the initial situation of students, as much objective as possible, requires triangulation, comparison and integration of the information collected with three self-assessment tools. An Italian toolkit is now available. It allows to detect the following, at the beginning of the university course: (i) how students integrate ICT with disciplinary contents and teac…
Dangerous relationships : biases in freshwater bioassessment based on observed to expected ratios
2018
Copyright by the Ecological Society of America The ecological assessment of freshwaters is currently primarily based on biological communities and the reference condition approach (RCA). In the RCA, the communities in streams and lakes disturbed by humans are compared with communities in reference conditions with no or minimal anthropogenic influence. The currently favored rationale is using selected community metrics for which the expected values (E) for each site are typically estimated from environmental variables using a predictive model based on the reference data. The proportional differences between the observed values (O) and E are then derived, and the decision rules for status ass…

Towards an optimal self-assessment tool for information security investment decision-making
2017
Aikaisempi tutkimus keskittyi pääasiallisesti taloudellisiin malleihin, joiden tarkoituksena oli auttaa organisaatioita tunnistamaan kuinka paljon heidän tulisi sijoittaa tietoturvallisuuteen. Nämä mallit pyrkivät tuottojen maksimointiin ja keskittyivät tietoturvainvestointiprosessin tiettyihin osiin. Tästä johtuen, klassiset teoriat ja mallit ovat ongelmallisia tietoturvainvestointien päätösten teossa, jonka myötä tulisi omaksua kokonaisvaltaisempi lähestyminen tietoturvainvestointeihin. Tietoturvallisuuden tutkimuskentältä puuttuu tutkimusta tietoturvallisuuden itsearviointityökalujen käytöstä tietoturvainvestointien päätöksenteossa. Tämä tutkimus pyrki täyttämään tämän aukon tutkimalla o…
BETWEEN SUBJECTIVE AND OBJECTIVE IN MAKING DECISIONS ON THE ROMANIAN HIGHER EDUCATION MARKET
2012
Having roots in intentional behaviours, adverse selection as part of information asymmetry is a widely - discussed concept, closely related to many sides of economics and generating the most various problems in practice. As the specific literature says, the adverse selection leads, or at least in theory should lead to market failure when no external force comes to balance its effects. Since this failure never occurs in fact, it is questionable whether the adverse selection is the only factor that influences an uniformed consumer decision, or other factors come to counterbalance the factors described by Akerloff. This paper intends to advocate the idea that as much as adverse selection, ther…
2001
This article tries to explain the influence of privatization on the decision making process, especially in terms of investments through the corporate governance theory. In this perspective we suggest a conceptual framework based on the analysis of disciplinary mechanisms and their dynamic as a foundation of an explanatory research applied to the France Télécom case.
