Exclusive breastfeeding (EBF)—giving infants only breast-milk for the first 6 months of life—is a component of optimal breastfeeding practices effective in preventing child morbidity and mortality. EBF practices are known to vary by population and comparable subnational estimates of prevalence and progress across low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are required for planning policy and interventions. Measuring and Evaluating Intergenerational Mobility: Evidence from Students’ Questionnaires

Three fundamental ideas in the study of intergenerational mobility are those of structural mobility, origin independence and rank reversal. We review the theoretical literature focused on the three ideas and present evidence from a questionnaire designed to test students’ views regarding the different notions. The questionnaire is conducted under both a “measurement” and an “evaluation” frame; it uses questions involving both verbal statements of the principles tested and pairwise comparisons of simple hypothetical mobility situations; for the latter exercise, the questionnaire introduces a new intuitive display based on mobility trees. Microbial analysis of raw cows' milk used for cheese-making: influence of storage treatments on microbial composition and other technological traits

Raw milk used to produce Grana cheese was subjected to several treatment regimes, including varying temperatures and storage times. Milk from morning and evening milking were transferred to a dairy factory sepa- rately (double delivery) or together (single delivery), after storage at the farm for 12 h; in the former case, milk was stored at 12 or 8°C, whereas, in the latter, it was kept at ambient temperature or 18°C. AbstractThis paper reports on a study about how the mathematics textbook was perceived and used by the teacher in the context of a calculus part of a basic mathematics course for first-year engineering students. The focus was on the teacher's choices and the use of definitions, examples and exercises in a sequence of lectures introducing the derivative concept. Data were collected during observations of lectures and an interview, and informal talks with the teacher. Evaluation of the use of phase-specific gene promoters for the expression of enological enzymes in an industrial wine yeast strain

Genes as POT1, HSP104 and SSA3, which are late expressed in laboratory culture conditions are expressed only during the first few days in microvinifications in wine yeast cells. This effect is probably due to the different growth conditions and leads to useless levels of enzyme activity for a reporter gene. However the ACT1 promoter, which is constitutively expressed in laboratory conditions, produces sufficient amounts of enzyme activity in late fermentation phases.
Two discourses: researchers and policy-making in higher education

The theme of this article focuses on how policy discourse and research discourse meet in contract research in higher education. The interplay of these discourses has consequences for researchers who have to balance conflicting demands, which we view as links between research and policy cycles. Two evaluation studies on the introduction and effects of new policy instruments are discussed, focusing on the interaction between policy needs, and research design. The examples are taken from policies in the development towards increasing self-regulation in higher education, of which Finland and the Netherlands are interesting examples in the European context.

Rare Cancers Europe (RCE) methodological recommendations for clinical studies in rare cancers: A European consensus position paper

While they account for one-fifth of new cancer cases, rare cancers are difficult to study. A higher than average degree of uncertainty should be accommodated for clinical as well as for population-based decision making. Rules of rational decision making in conditions of uncertainty should be rigorously followed and would need widely informative clinical trials. In principle, any piece of new evidence would need to be exploited in rare cancers. Methodologies to explicitly weigh and combine all the available evidence should be refined, and the Bayesian logic can be instrumental to this end.
