Bone Mineral Density and Vitamin D Status in Female and Male Patients with Osteoarthritis of the Knee or Hip

<i>Objective:</i> Osteoporosis (OP), osteoarthritis (OA) and vitamin D deficiency are age-related disorders. We investigated the association between bone mineral density (BMD), vitamin D and OA in patients undergoing total hip or knee replacements. <i>Method:</i> In total, 82 women and 35 men with mean ages of 70 and 68 years, respectively, were recruited for the study. The BMD of the lumbar spine and the proximal femur were measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. One-year follow-up of panic disorder. Outcome and prognostic factors.

A 1-year follow-up study was carried out in 77 patients with panic attacks (panic disorder). Of these patients 43% were remitted; avoidance behaviour and chronic anxiety were more persistent than panic attacks within the 1-year period. The main predictor for features of anxiety in the follow-up was avoidance behaviour. The most prominent prognostic factor for features of depression was the history of previous depressive episodes. Female patients had a poorer outcome than male patients.

Hereditary Progressive Mucinous Histiocytosis in Women

We describe three female patients in a family of two generations, who suffered from generalized and maximally pea-sized histiocytic tumors beginning in early adolescence. The disease ran a uniform and slowly progressive course and was confined to the skin. There were no signs of spontaneous tumor regression. Histologic, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural examination revealed the histiocytic nature of the tumors. An outstanding finding was a marked production of mucinous material, predominantly in long-standing tumors. Alternative surgical management of oroantral fistula using auricular cartilage

One of the clinical complications encountered by oral and maxillofacial surgeons is oroantral communication (OAC) with subsequent formation of oroantral fistula (OAF). Many techniques and treatment modalities have been described for the management of OAC and OAF. There are advantages and disadvantages of all these techniques. We report a 21-year-old male patient who was admitted to our department for the presence of an OAF and was treated using an auricular cartilage graft. This technique may be useful to treat OAF and to provide a solid alveolar bone site for subsequent pre-implant surgery. Key words:Auricular cartilage, implant surgery, oroantral fistula.

Italian registry of patients off therapy after childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Results after first phase of data collection

The Italian Registry of Off-Therapy patients after childhood tumors now includes 760 subjects with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. These patients were all removed from treatment by December 31, 1981, and were followed in 35 different institutions. All the children have received multiple-drug treatment, combined, in 79.7% of the cases, with cranial irradiation. Thirty-nine (5%) experienced a relapse before treatment suspension. Total duration of antileukemic therapy ranges between 18 and 131 months (median, 38). At the last updating (December 31, 1981), 699 subjects were alive, 6 were lost to follow-up, and 55 had died. Suprachoroidal Bleeding After XEN Gel Implantation

Purpose To report for the first time a clinical case of suprachoroidal bleeding after XEN45 gel implantation. Observations A 84-year old female patient with pseudoexfoliation glaucoma with intraocular pressure (IOP) (20 mm Hg) above target despite maximal IOP-lowering therapy was scheduled for XEN45 gel implantation. The XEN45 gel implantation went without complications and was properly placed in the anterior chamber and beneath the conjunctiva.
