Differences in Serum Zn Levels in Acutely Ill and Recovered Adolescents and Young Adults with Anorexia Nervosa - A Pilot Study

2011

Preliminary evidence suggests that changes in zinc (Zn) metabolism are associated with anorexia nervosa (AN). However, data are scarce regarding potential differences in serum Zn concentrations in adolescent and young adult patients with AN. It was the aim of the present pilot study to compare serum Zn concentrations between acutely ill and remitted adolescent and young adult female patients with AN and female controls. Zn concentrations were higher in remitted compared with acutely ill patients. Zn concentrations were also higher in remitted patients compared with controls, but there was no significant difference in Zn concentrations between acutely ill patients and controls. The present s…

LDL size and subclasses in patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm

2009

Abstract Since the type of dyslipidemia in patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is still insufficiently defined, we measured plasma lipids and analyzed LDL size and subclasses by gradient gel electrophoresis in 30 male patients (69±6 years, BMI: 27±3) with newly diagnosed AAA and in 26 age- and BMI-matched male healthy controls. Patients with AAA had lower HDL-cholesterol ( p p =.0002) and smaller LDL size ( p p =.0210) in relation to controls. Multivariate analysis also showed that small LDL size was independently associated with the presence of AAA ( p =.0350). Increased levels of small, dense LDL may therefore represent a common feature in patients with AAA.

Die emotionale Zufriedenheit von Patienten mit der anästhesiologischen Betreuung

2003

Objective The evaluation of services by patients is an integral part of continuous quality improvement in anaesthesia. Patient satisfaction is affected by various objective and subjective variables. Individual experiences, impressions and needs represent an important part of overall patient satisfaction. Methods Data of 519 patients were collected in a standardised anonymous questionnaire independent of the post-anaesthetic visit. Results Anaesthesia staff appeared to be friendly to 97 % of patients asked, 95 % of patients wanted to be treated by the same staff in case of another anaesthesia, nearly 87 % felt relaxed and satisfied after anaesthesia. Up to 26 % of patients felt tense after p…

Primary malignant PEComa of the mandible. Report of an unusual case

2021

Malignant PEComa is a rare entity that usually origins at visceral, retroperitoneal and abdominopelvic sites. In the present paper, we describe an extremely unusual manifestation of malignant PEComa involving the mandible in a 48 years-old female patient focusing on the anatomopathological findings and differential diagnosis. The therapeutic management based on the head and neck tumor board indications is also discussed. Key words:Malignant PEComa, PEComa of the mandible, PEComa pathology, Oral cavity unusual neoplasm.

Retrorectal tumour simulating vaginal birth: an exceptional case of emergency surgery indication

2017

Cystic retrorectal tumours are a very rare entity that pose a problem in differential diagnosis between congenital cyst and other lesions. We present a 49-year-old female patient presenting a perineal bulge which was discovered simulating a vaginal birth associated with prolapsed haemorrhoids grade IV. The interest of this case resides in the surgical indication of a big presacral cyst demonstrated via CT causing acute intense pain due to pelvic organ compression, as no emergent surgery management has been reported up to date.

Holmium Laser Endoureterotomy With the Lovaco Technique for the Treatment of Ureterointestinal Stenosis: Step by step.

2018

Abstract Objective To describe holmium laser endoureterotomy with the Lovaco technique for the treatment of ureterointestinal stenosis. This common problem after cystectomy represents a surgical challenge, with endourological techniques being useful in this context. We present a technique that has been described before, but which we consider useful and decisive. The key points and difficult aspects of the technique are shown, along with our experience with it. Methods We collected data on cases of ureterointestinal stenosis treated using holmium laser endoureterotomy with the Lovaco technique, in a prospective manner, between January 2017 and January 2018. Intraoperative data, postoperative…

Frovatriptan vs almotriptan for treatment of menstrual migraine: a double-blind, randomized, cross-over, multicenter Italian study

2013

Results 67 of the 96 female patients of the intention-to-treat population of the main study had regular menstrual cycles and were thus included in this subgroup analysis. 77 migraine attacks classified as related to menses were treated with frovatriptan and 78 with almotriptan. Rate of pain relief at 2and 4-hrs was 36% and 53% for frovatriptan and 41% and 50% for almotriptan (p=NS between treatments). Rate of pain free at 2and 4-hrs was 19% and 47% with frovatriptan and 29% and 54% for almotriptan (p=NS). At 24-hrs, 62% of frovatriptanand 67% of almotriptan-treated patients had pain relief, while 60% vs. 67% were pain free (p=NS). Recurrence at 24-hrs was significantly (p<0.05) lower with f…

Orofacial granulomatosis: a rare case report with review of literature

2010

The term orofacial granulomatosis (OFG) is a descriptive term used for granulomatous disorders affecting the face and oral cavity, which can occur for a variety of reasons resulting in significant morbidity. It is characterised by persistent swelling that may involve one or both the lips and /or recurrent ulcers and a variety of other orofacial features. Medical history is very important in the diagnosis of OFG as medical condition like Crohn’s disease can also present an extra intestinal manifestation of OFG. Exclusion of other entities like sarcoidosis, mycobacterial infections, foreign body reactions and biopsy helps to establish a correct diagnosis. Herein we report a case of OFG in a 5…

Detection of bifid mandibular condyle using computed tomography

2011

Objective: To determine the frequency and characteristics of bifid mandibular condyle (BMC) using computed tomography (CT) evaluation. Study Design: A retrospective study was carried out using the CT records of 550 patients referred to the Medical School of Erciyes University (Kayseri, Turkey) between 2007 and 2010. T-tests were used to compare frequency of BMC between the left and right sides and between female and male patients. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS software and a chi-squared test. Results: Of the 550 Patients, 10 patients (1.82%) were found to have BMCs. Five patients were female (50%) and five were male (50%). Of these 10 patients, 7 (70%) had unilateral and 3 (…

Decreased serum levels of sex steroids associated with osteoporosis in a group of Romanian male patients

2016

Abstract Introduction. With age, sex hormone deficiency leads to reduced bone mineral density (BMD) in men. The aim of our research is to analyze the role of serum sex steroids in assessing BMD in the men included in this study. Materials and methods. This cross-sectional study included 146 men aged 65-85 years old with osteopenia or osteoporosis (study group) and 121 men with normal BMD (control group). Serum levels of total testosterone (Tt) and free testosterone (Tf) were measured by immunoassay, and estradiol (E2) levels were measured by the immunoenzymatic method. Femoral neck and lumbar spine BMD was examined by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Results. Tf and E2 deficiency was signi…
