From corona virus to corona crisis : the value of an analytical and geographical understanding of crisis

2020

Abstract The term ‘crisis’ is omnipresent. The current corona virus pandemic is perceived as the most recent example. However, the notion of crisis is increasingly deployed as a signifier of relevance, rather than as an analytical concept. Moreover, human geography has so far little contributed to the interdisciplinary crisis research field which is fixated on the temporal aspects of crisis but neglects its spatiality. Against this background, the first aim of the paper is to demonstrate the value of thinking about crisis analytically. Therefore, we introduce theoretical knowledge developed within a recently emerging literature on crisis management. Second, we demonstrate the relevance of i…

The Source Value of Arabic Typikon-Manuscripts as Testimonials for the Byzantinization of the Melkites

2021

With the expansion of Islam, the patriarchates of Antioch, Jerusalem, and Alexandria were divided from the Byzantine Empire. The Orthodox Christians there still defined themselves as Byzantine Orthodox and began to adapt their liturgical customs by adopting Byzantine liturgical books. When Greek was not understood any longer, they began to translate and copy their liturgical books, thereby creating their own branch of tradition, which is marked by multilingualism, reception of their own Bible tradition as well as the exclusion of “neo-martyrs” from their calendar of saints.

Animal musicians in illuminated manuscripts (1300-1450)

2014

International audience; The illustrations of illuminated manuscripts between 1300 and 1450 featured a very large number of animal musicians. They were set in the marginal borders of the pages, and framed the text and miniature with their musical sonorities. Along with King David, animals were the main musicians featured in medieval illuminations, far more numerous than angels and minstrels. The monkey, dog, fox and half-animal, half-human hybrid creatures were the " champions " of instrumental music. At the crossroads of history and art history, musicology and literature, their representations suggest that we identify typologies of books, animals and instruments. They raise several question…

A Poem for All Seasons: Alcuin’s “O vos, est aetas”

2017

There is no complete account of the transmission of Alcuin’s poems, which is apparently quite unpredictable if not random. The circulation of a number of short compositions, which accompany his treatises and his letters, and their circulation together, is so far uncharted. Particularly intriguing is the manuscript tradition of “O vos, est aetas,” a poem in seven distichs, in which young men are encouraged to learn rhetoric and to cultivate virtue. The poem generally occurs in connection with two prose works by Alcuin, the De dialectica (henceforth DD) and the Disputatio de rhetorica et virtutibus (henceforth DR). It may be copied either between the two treatises, before the prologue poem of…

Manuskrypt cechu krawców ze zbiorów Archiwum Państwowego w Opolu. Edycja krytyczna

2016
