Geodesic X-ray tomography for piecewise constant functions on nontrapping manifolds
2017
We show that on a two-dimensional compact nontrapping manifold with strictly convex boundary, a piecewise constant function is determined by its integrals over geodesics. In higher dimensions, we obtain a similar result if the manifold satisfies a foliation condition. These theorems are based on iterating a local uniqueness result. Our proofs are elementary.
Polynomial and horizontally polynomial functions on Lie groups
2022
We generalize both the notion of polynomial functions on Lie groups and the notion of horizontally affine maps on Carnot groups. We fix a subset $S$ of the algebra $\mathfrak g$ of left-invariant vector fields on a Lie group $\mathbb G$ and we assume that $S$ Lie generates $\mathfrak g$. We say that a function $f:\mathbb G\to \mathbb R$ (or more generally a distribution on $\mathbb G$) is $S$-polynomial if for all $X\in S$ there exists $k\in \mathbb N$ such that the iterated derivative $X^k f$ is zero in the sense of distributions. First, we show that all $S$-polynomial functions (as well as distributions) are represented by analytic functions and, if the exponent $k$ in the previous defini…
Slopes of Kantorovich potentials and existence of optimal transport maps in metric measure spaces
2014
We study optimal transportation with the quadratic cost function in geodesic metric spaces satisfying suitable non-branching assumptions. We introduce and study the notions of slope along curves and along geodesics and we apply the latter to prove suitable generalizations of Brenier's theorem of existence of optimal maps.
The Calderón problem with partial data on manifolds and applications
2013
We consider Calderon's inverse problem with partial data in dimensions $n \geq 3$. If the inaccessible part of the boundary satisfies a (conformal) flatness condition in one direction, we show that this problem reduces to the invertibility of a broken geodesic ray transform. In Euclidean space, sets satisfying the flatness condition include parts of cylindrical sets, conical sets, and surfaces of revolution. We prove local uniqueness in the Calderon problem with partial data in admissible geometries, and global uniqueness under an additional concavity assumption. This work unifies two earlier approaches to this problem (\cite{KSU} and \cite{I}) and extends both. The proofs are based on impr…
Conformal invariance of the writhe of a knot
2008
We give a new proof of an old theorem by Banchoff and White 1975 that claims that the writhe of a knot is conformally invariant.
Symplectic Applicability of Lagrangian Surfaces
2009
We develop an approach to affine symplectic invariant geometry of Lagrangian surfaces by the method of moving frames. The fundamental invariants of elliptic Lagrangian immersions in affine symplectic four-space are derived together with their integrability equa- tions. The invariant setup is applied to discuss the question of symplectic applicability for elliptic Lagrangian immersions. Explicit examples are considered.
Nonexistence of Quasiconformal Maps Between Certain Metric Measure Spaces
2013
We provide new conditions that ensure that two metric measure spaces are not quasiconformally equivalent. As an application, we deduce that there exists no quasiconformal map between the sub-Riemannian Heisenberg and roto-translation groups.
Dimension gap under conformal mappings
2012
Abstract We give an estimate for the Hausdorff gauge dimension of the boundary of a simply connected planar domain under p -integrability of the hyperbolic metric, p > 1 . This estimate does not degenerate when p tends to one; for p = 1 the boundary can even have positive area. The same phenomenon is extended to general planar domains in terms of the quasihyperbolic metric. We also give an example which shows that our estimates are essentially sharp.
Generalized evolutes, vertices and conformal invariants of curves in Rn + 1
1999
Abstract We define the generalized evolute of a curve in ( n + 1)-space and find a duality relation between them. We also prove that the conformal torsion is a function of the speed of the generalized evolute and that the singular points of the generalized evolute (vertices) are conformal invariants.
Conformal curvatures of curves in
2001
Abstract We define a complete set of conformal invariants for pairs of spheres in and obtain from these the expressions of the conformal curvatures of curves in (n + 1)-space in terms of the Euclidean invariants.
