Ricci-flow based conformal mapping of the proximal femur to identify exercise loading effects.

2018

AbstractThe causal relationship between habitual loading and adaptive response in bone morphology is commonly explored by analysing the spatial distribution of mechanically relevant features. In this study, 3D distribution of features in the proximal femur of 91 female athletes (5 exercise loading groups representing habitual loading) is contrasted with 20 controls. A femur specific Ricci-flow based conformal mapping procedure was developed for establishing correspondence among the periosteal surfaces. The procedure leverages the invariance of the conformal mapping method to isometric shape differences to align surfaces in the 2D parametric domain, to produce dense correspondences across an…

Constant angle surfaces in 4-dimensional Minkowski space

2019

Abstract We first define a complex angle between two oriented spacelike planes in 4-dimensional Minkowski space, and then study the constant angle surfaces in that space, i.e. the oriented spacelike surfaces whose tangent planes form a constant complex angle with respect to a fixed spacelike plane. This notion is the natural Lorentzian analogue of the notion of constant angle surfaces in 4-dimensional Euclidean space. We prove that these surfaces have vanishing Gauss and normal curvatures, obtain representation formulas for the constant angle surfaces with regular Gauss maps and construct constant angle surfaces using PDE’s methods. We then describe their invariants of second order and show…

Surface homeomorphisms with zero dimensional singular set

1998

We prove that if f is an orientation-preserving homeomorphism of a closed orientable surface M whose singular set is totally disconnected, then f is topologically conjugate to a conformal transformation.

A multi-methodology and sustainability-supporting framework for implementation and assessment of a holistic building renovation

Bibliometric analysis and literature review of ecotourism: Toward sustainable development

2021

In recent decades, rising consumer interest in visiting relatively less commercialized natural destinations has facilitated the growth of ecotourism. Yet the research on ecotourism is fragmented, presenting gaps in the current understanding of this topic. This study performs a bibliometric analysis to assimilate the present knowledge from a total of 878 articles published in six reputable outlets between 1990 and 2019. The study analyzed citation chains and coauthorship networks to acknowledge contributions from select authors, organizations, and countries. Next, a cocitation analysis of the prior literature identified four major thematic areas: ecological preservation, residents' interests…

Soil Mapping and Processes Modeling for Sustainable Land Management

2017

Soil maps and models are indispensable tools in sustainable land management. The sustainable land use of our territory is fundamental to providing long-term socio-economic and environmental benefits. The risk of land degradation and corresponding declines in ecosystem services depends on the type of land use. Soil restoration can be extremely expensive, more than the implementation of sustainable land use practices. This is especially important in the context of climate change and the increasing pressure that a growing population places on soil resources, which is a global phenomenon. The objective of this chapter is to show the advantages of using soil mapping and modeling in sustainable l…

Fixed point results on metric-type spaces

2014

Abstract In this paper we obtain fixed point and common fixed point theorems for self-mappings defined on a metric-type space, an ordered metric-type space or a normal cone metric space. Moreover, some examples and an application to integral equations are given to illustrate the usability of the obtained results.

Closing in on the toxic domain through analysis of a variant Clostridium difficile cytotoxin B

1995

Strain 1470 is the standard typing strain for serogroup F of Clostridium difficile containing both toxin genes, toxA-1470 and toxB-1470. A polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based approach to the sequencing of the total toxB-1470 gene identified an open reading frame (ORF) of 7104 nucleotides. In comparison with the previously sequenced toxB of C. difficile VP10463, the toxB-1470 gene has 16 additional nucleotides, 13 within the 5'-untranslated region and three within the coding region. The M(r) of ToxB-1470 is 269,262, with an isoelectric point (IP) of 4.16. The equivalent values for ToxB are M(r) 269,709 and IP 4.13. In comparison with ToxB, ToxB-1470 differs primarily in the N-terminal regi…

New method for field studies on the parapatric distribution of sibling species

1999

Abstract Spatial segregation (parapatry) often occurs between closely related species. The distributions of the two species are sometimes defined with a small overlapping zone (called a `sympatric area') which generally shifts. Exclusion is necessary to explain the persistence and shift of such a spatial pattern. Field studies are carried out to identify the type of interaction that leads to the required exclusion. This is usually achieved by estimating competition and predation parameters to define the type of interaction strong enough to imply exclusion. But interaction parameters are estimated by quantitative methods which require prolonged observation (5–10 years). These estimations are…
