The pro-opiomelanocortin gene of the zebrafish (Danio rerio)
2003
The cDNA and the gene for pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) in the zebrafish (Danio rerio) were isolated and analyzed. The gene consists of three exons and two short introns and has a similar overall structural organization as in Homo sapiens. Intron 1 (339 bp) divides the 5(') untranslated region from the coding region while intron 2 (1522 bp) is located between the signal peptide and the sequence encoding ACTH. Transcription starts 26 bp downstream of a TATA box and there is one polyadenylation signal in the 3(') untranslated region. The cDNA comprises of 964 bp with an open reading frame encoding a 222 amino acid hormone prepropeptide that is split into six putative hormones. Sequence comparis…
Ethical E-Participation
2014
The most recent forms of e-participation seem to provide new issues that need to be discussed. One such discussion involves the role of GIS. Can an ethically aware GIS be conceived? What does it mean for a GIS to be ethical at all? Throughout this paper, first the authors create a theoretical framework to encompass four key elements that lead us to the definition of ethical digital mapping: GIS ethics, social justice, power, and participation. Then they introduce the concept of PPGIS (Public Participation GIS), and argue that only a ‘qualitative turn' can enhance their importance in decision-making processes. Finally, the authors discuss an experiment that is currently taking place in Paler…
USING AERIAL IMAGE ANALYSIS AS A TOOL FOR TOPSOIL, SOIL AND SUBSTRATE MAPPING IN VINEYARDS(BURGUNDY, FRANCE)
2013
International audience; In Burgundy, vineyards present a high diversity of Terroirs, controlled by complex interactions between natural and human factors. The relationship between these factors leads to define wine typicity. However, a better understanding of how Terroirs have been defined is necessary for the sustainable, rational management of vineyard soils. The objectives of the study are (i) to identify Terroirs variability in vineyards of Burgundy (France) at hillslope scale and (ii) to highlight natural (soil, substratum) and anthropogenic factors (management practices) controlling Terroir diversity. To study Terroir at a fine scale, we developed a method based on a very high spatial r…
Kokapstrādes uzņēmuma AS "INGRID D" pirmapstrādes ceha modernizācija
2018
Maģistra darba tēma ir “Kokapstrādes uzņēmuma AS “INGRID D” pirmapstrādes ceha modernizācija”. Pētījuma mērķis ir veicināt efektīvu koksnes resursu izmantošanu to pirmapstrādes procesā. Autore pētījumu rezultātā nonākusi …
Introducing a strategic perspective in lean thinking applications through system dynamics modelling: the dynamic Value Stream Map
2020
PurposeLean Thinking is an operation management discipline which aims to identify, map and analyse the activities forming a process to detect “value waste” and outline the most effective flow of activities to execute in sequence. Process mapping is often developed in lean projects through the use of the Value Stream Map (VSM). Like many other management tools, the VSM adopts a static and non-systemic perspective in the representation of an organizational process. This may result in the implementation of Lean projects inconsistent with the overall organizational long-term strategy, thus leading to dysfunctional performance. In order to overcome this limit, the paper suggests combining VSM wi…
The Role of Big Data in Addressing Societal Challenges: A Systematic Mapping Study
2019
Part 2: Big Data Analytics; International audience; Big data has recently become the focus of academic and corporate investigation due to its high potential in generating business and social value. We have done a systematic mapping of the literature related to big data and its applications leading to social change through the lens of social innovation. The search strategy initially resulted in 593 papers, and after applying inclusion exclusion criteria a total of 156 papers were mapped; 59% of which were identified as empirical studies. This mapping investigated the publication frequency of the studies, research approach and contributions, research areas and article distribution per journal…
Strategic Management of Knowledge Workers: Communicational Value of Balanced Scorecard
2013
Knowledge-intensive firms (KIFs) are strategically dependent on knowledge. This knowledge can be found in two types: the knowledge based on the organization’s members’ expertise and the assimilated knowledge resources (eg. norms, routines, policies, and physical knowledge bases) (Kirjavainen 2001). When the company is operating in a constantly changing environment, the management of its knowledge resources becomes a crucial task.
The Value of Stakeholder Mapping to Enhance Co-Creation in Citizen Science Initiatives
2019
This report aims to enhance our understanding of stakeholder mapping for co-created citizen science initiatives. It presents and discusses findings from an international two-day stakeholder mapping workshop with researchers, event organizers, communication experts, and artists realizing citizen science activities. Participants identified examples of co-creation in their work and mapped stakeholders for three co-creation initiatives from the “Doing It Together Science” project. For each case, we provide an overview of the stakeholder groups involved and the lessons derived from identifying actual and potential stakeholders in different phases of each activity and using different ways for map…
Mapping and assessing ecosystem services in the EU:Lessons learned from the ESMERALDA approach of integration
2018
The European Union (EU) Horizon 2020 Coordination and Support Action ESMERALDA aimed at developing guidance and a flexible methodology for Mapping and Assessment of Ecosystems and their Services (MAES) to support the EU member states in the implementation of the EU Biodiversity Strategy's Target 2 Action 5. ESMERALDA's key tasks included network creation, stakeholder engagement, enhancing ecosystem services mapping and assessment methods across various spatial scales and value domains, work in case studies and support of EU member states in MAES implementation. Thus ESMERALDA aimed at integrating various project outcomes around four major strands: i) Networking, ii) Policy, iii) Research an…
The hypoxia-inducible factor-responsive proteins semaphorin 4D and vascular endothelial growth factor promote tumor growth and angiogenesis in oral s…
2012
Growth and metastasis of solid tumors requires induction of angiogenesis to ensure the delivery of oxygen, nutrients and growth factors to rapidly dividing transformed cells. Through either mutations, hypoxia generated by cytoreductive therapies, or when a malignancy outgrows its blood supply, tumor cells undergo a change from an avascular to a neovascular phenotype, a transition mediated by the hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) family of transcriptional regulators. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is one example of a gene whose transcription is stimulated by HIF. VEGF plays a crucial role in promoting tumor growth and survival by stimulating new blood vessel growth in response to suc…
