Comparison of Right Ventricular Longitudinal Strain Imaging, Tricuspid Annular Plane Systolic Excursion, and Cardiac Biomarkers for Early Diagnosis o…
2010
Objectives: The aim was to determine the role of assessing right ventricular (RV) function, using standard echocardiography and Doppler myocardial imaging (DMI), in the early diagnosis of cardiac amyloidosis (CA) and in prediction of mortality. Methods: A total of 249 patients with AL amyloidosis were categorized on the basis of left ventricular thickness and E' velocity, and compared to 38 age- and sex-matched controls. Standard echocardiographic parameters of RV function were assessed, and longitudinal systolic myocardial velocity, strain rate (sSR), and strain (sS) were determined for the basal and middle RV free wall segments. Patients were followed for the endpoint of mortality. Result…
Effects of Physical Exercise on Inflammatory Markers of Atherosclerosis
2011
It is well established that physically fit individuals have a reduced risk of developing CVD (cardiovascular disease) and other age-related chronic disorders. Regular exercise is an established therapeutic intervention with an enormous range of benefits. Chronic low-grade systemic inflammation may be involved in atherosclerosis, diabetes and in pathogenesis of several chronic pathological conditions; recent findings confirm that physical activity induces an increase in the systemic levels of a number of cytokines and chemokines with anti-inflammatory properties. The possibility that regular physical exercise exerts anti-inflammation activity, being the interaction between contracting muscle…
Long-term hepatic safety of lomitapide in homozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia
2023
Introduction: Lomitapide is a microsomal triglyceride transfer protein inhibitor for patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia. Due to its mechanism of action, potential hepatic effects of lomitapide are of clinical interest. This study aimed to determine the long-term hepatic safety of lomitapide. Methods: Data were aggregated from the pivotal phase 3 and extension phase clinical trial with lomitapide (median 5.1 years; serum total bilirubin, transaminases, cytokeratin-18 [CK-18] and enhanced liver fibrosis [ELF] score, fat-soluble vitamins and essential fatty acids), 8-year data from the Lomitapide Observational Worldwide Evaluation Registry (LOWER) and real-world evidence f…

Apolipoprotein A1 in Cerebrospinal Fluid Is Insufficient to Distinguish Alzheimer's Disease from Other Dementias in a Naturalistic, Clinical Setting.
2020
Apolipoprotein A1 (ApoA1) is the major protein component of the high-density lipoprotein and involved in cholesterol transport. Disruption of cholesterol homeostasis has been identified as a contributing factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD). Moreover, polymorphisms of ApoA1 have been associated with higher risk of disease onset and cognitive decline. Therefore, ApoA1 has been suggested as a biomarker in AD. Here, we tested a small cohort of AD and non-AD dementia patients and measured levels of ApoA1 in cerebrospinal fluid. Our results indicate that ApoA1 might not be applicable to distinguish AD from other forms of dementia.
Disease Biomarkers: Modelling MR Spectroscopy and Clinical Applications
2012
Clinical MRS has become a reference technique for in vivo evaluating the metabolism of different tissues, with special application to brain and prostate lesion characterization and tumour’s follow-up. It allows detecting relevant changes that cannot be appreciated in the conventional MR images. Nowadays, MRS has been widely applied in many different brain pathologies with excellent results as a disease biomarker. Since the different diseases and grades have different manifestations in the spectroscopic profile, a deep understanding of the subjacent biology is needed for the signal interpretation. The development of high-field (≥3 T) scanners has permitted the acquisition of high-quality MRS…
