Crenobalneotherapy (spa therapy) in patients with knee and generalized osteoarthritis: a post-hoc subgroup analysis of a large multicentre randomized…

2014

Abstract Objective To determine whether the addition of spa therapy to home exercises provides any benefit over exercises and the usual treatment alone in the management of generalised osteoarthritis associated with knee osteoarthritis. Methods This study was a post-hoc subgroup analysis of our randomised multicentre trial ( www.clinicaltrial.gov : NCT00348777 ). Participants who met the inclusion criteria of generalized osteoarthritis (Kellgren, American College of Rheumatology, or Dougados criteria) were extracted from the original randomised controlled trial. They had been randomised using Zelen randomisation. The treatment group received 18 days of spa treatment in addition to a home ex…

Solar PAR and UVR modify the community composition and photosynthetic activity of sea ice algae

2015

The effects of increased photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) and ultraviolet radiation (UVR) on species diversity, biomass and photosynthetic activity were studied in fast ice algal communities. The experimental set-up consisted of nine 1.44 m(2) squares with three treatments: untreated with natural snow cover (UNT), snow-free (PAR + UVR) and snow-free ice covered with a UV screen (PAR). The total algal biomass, dominated by diatoms and dinoflagellates, increased in all treatments during the experiment. However, the smaller biomass growth in the top 10-cm layer of the PAR + UVR treatment compared with the PAR treatment indicated the negative effect of UVR. Scrippsiella complex (mainly…

Massadatan hyödyntämisen menestystekijät ja haasteet digitaalisessa markkinoinnissa

2017

Tämä kandidaatintutkielma tutkii menestystekijöitä massadatan hyödyntämisessä digitaalisen markkinoinnin tarkoituksiin. Yleisesti aihepiiriä on aiemmin tutkittu lähinnä koko liiketoiminnan näkökulmasta. Tutkielma pyrkii selvittämään näkökulmia aihepiiriin juuri markkinoinnin kannalta, sillä markkinoinnin näkökulmasta aihetta ei ole tutkittu kovin laajasti. Tutkielma on toteutettu kirjallisuuskatsauksena. Suurin osa lähdeaineistosta on viime vuosilta, ja varsinkin markkinoinnin näkökulmasta tehty massadatan hyödyntämisen tutkimus on tuoretta. Lähdeaineisto koostuu pääasiassa vertaisarvioiduista tieteellisistä artikkeleista. Myös kaupallisia lähteitä on käytetty suhteellisen paljon, sillä tut…

Gestione sostenibile delle foreste Mediterranee e uso energetico delle biomasse forestali residuali

2014

he book describes the reasons that led the Regional Department of Rural and Territorial Development to take part in the PROFORBIOMED Project. They can be summarized by the need to dispose of a tool for the sustainable management of all the state-owned forests of the Region. As a matter of fact, the Project aims at developing a model of sustainable forest management, through the recovery and reuse of wood scraps from ordinary silvicultural operations, to be used for the production of power and heat inside of a process adopting natural renewable energy sources. The main actions taken and the methodologies adopted are described, as well as the principles and instruments required for the settin…

Insulin resistance and atrial fibrillation (from the Framingham Heart Study)

2011

Diabetes mellitus and obesity are increasing in prevalence and are associated with an elevated risk of atrial fibrillation (AF). Given the aging of the United States population, AF is projected to concomitantly increase in prevalence in the upcoming decades. Both diabetes and obesity are associated with insulin resistance. Whether insulin resistance is an intermediate step for the development of AF is uncertain. We hypothesized that insulin resistance is associated with an increased risk of incident AF. We examined the association of insulin resistance with incident AF using multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression analysis adjusting for the established AF risk factors (i.e., age, g…

Brønsted and Lewis acid catalyzed conversion of pulp industry waste biomass to levulinic acid

2019

Enormous amounts of fiber sludge are generated annually by the pulp industry as a by-product. As a cellulose-rich material, its current usage, mainly as fuel, is inefficient from a material efficiency point of view. This work studied the utilization of fiber sludge from a Finnish and a Swedish pulp mill as a potential feedstock to produce levulinic acid, a valuable platform chemical. The conversion experiments of fiber sludge to levulinic acid were performed in a microwave reactor with a mixture of H2SO4 and Lewis acid as the catalyst. The reaction conditions, which included reaction time and temperature as well as the H2SO4 and Lewis acid concentrations, were studied in detail. The highest…

Well-posedness and singularity formation for the Camassa-Holm equation

2006

We prove the well-posedness of Camassa--Holm equation in analytic function spaces both locally and globally in time, and we investigate numerically the phenomenon of singularity formation for particular initial data.

An automated and self-cleaning nano liquid chromatography mass spectrometry platform featuring an open tubular multi-hole crystal fiber solid phase e…

2017

An open tubular (OT) sample preparation/separation platform was developed. A multi-channel polymer layer open tubular (mPLOT) solid phase extraction (SPE) column was prepared by wall-coating the 126 channels (8μm inner diameter (ID) each) of a crystal fiber capillary with an organic polymer, namely poly(styrene-co-octadecene-co-divinylbenzene) (PS-OD-DVB). The mPLOT SPE was coupled on-line with a 10μm×2m poly(styrene-co-divinylbenzene) (PS-DVB) OT liquid chromatography column with nanospray mass spectrometry (OTLC-MS). Compared to using monolithic/particle-packed SPEs, mPLOT-SPE-OTLC allowed both fast loading and sufficient refocusing on the OT analytical column of small model compounds (su…
